Electrician Matt is fault finding on an electric oven in this video both the electric heating element and the temperature control thermostat have failed. Matt starts by proving the old element has failed by testing it and then sets about removing a replacing the thermostat. This is not a how to guide but will be used in the classroom to provoke debate - like the isolation procedure was it carried out at the wall mounted double pole switch or at the overcurrent protection device.

Nice demo Matt, I’ve replaced the fan elements many times but, never the stat. It looks straight forward! I find the grill or top oven elements a real challenge to replace as they seem to be buried behind the oven walls, if you do happen to replace these “top elements”could you do a video on them?

I've replaced dozens, if not hundreds of these! Sometime they will blow the trip and then once reset, all will be well, except that the element won't get hot. Always the element, but occasionally the stat too. Neither job is particularly tricky, but you need to know how the appliance comes apart. 👍

Great repair. 👍Would have been better if you cleaned the oven so the customer would know what it should look like.😉

Personally I think we electricians shouldn’t have any thing to do with this stuff, there are plenty of qualified appliance engineers out there leave it to them , after all they have earn a living as , we have enough to do with EICRs and sorting out incompetent DIYers mess . But who am I to argue i’am just a humble spark who’s opinion means nothing. But Matt is a man of many talents so FairPlay to him .

Some qualified sparkies do a cr@p job too, not just DIY, couple of jobs I’ve had done by so called pros have had to be rectified by another sparky.

@@michaels8336 yes you’re right but my point is that we should leave this stuff to the appliance engineers they carry the spare parts and can get the parts quicker than we can as they will know what parts they need. Also I don’t know any appliance engineers who do a crap job.

What should the resistance reading be of a good heating element ?

Get yourself a Unilite so you'll be able to see inside clearly. Have to admit my other half often borrows one of mine when it's time to clean the inside of ours, something the owner of that one could definitely do with. 🤭

Hi Matt.Thank you for video.Learner Question:What tests could you have performed to check efficacy of the old capillary oven thermostat before you replaced it? I have an oven overheating and suspect oven stat is faulty.I could do a ohms test but have nothing to compare it too.Happy new year to everyone at GSH.Keep up the great content.

Does anyone know why an oven selector switch could keep burning out. It’s always the same terminals and happens a few months after a new switch is put on.

Nice video. But as an electrician I wouldn't go anywhere stuff like this. Far too time consuming. Better off getting a new oven judging how old it is

The most common cause of the element blowing is the fan motor bearings failing and the fan seizing up! Always worth checking free rotation before replacement of the element, as otherwise the new one will be short lived...

My mums oven stopped working a thew weeks before Xmas couple years back and it had just gone past Argos 1 year Warranty. I checked connections which were all fine so took the top off and the knob that changed the setting was all live even the nuetrals. I called the Argos team and they tried to palm me off with its past the warranty. I then threatened to sue as they sold me something unsafe regardless of the age and when the engineer come out he confirmed it was a cross polarity from the factory. He got a brand new oven delivered just before Xmas and Argos issued a compensation voucher of a £100. My mum was over the moon as she could still cook Xmas dinner and wasn’t out of pocket.

My old oven the main thermostat failed so it just kept getting hotter and hotter until the safety thermometer kicked in and tripped it's own internal protection circuit. The dials got really hot when it happened

When I started working for myself I used to repair cookers . These day most people don’t want them repaired or you can’t make much money for yourself if you do repair them . Most people’s ovens are not very clean as well. That’s alway off putting.
