@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs 2 жыл бұрын
WiFi 6 is a standard, meaning the hardware on board can achieve the parameters established that details what wifi 6 can achieve. 2.4ghz and 5ghz are radio bands that WiFi devices are allowed to operate on. So there is nothing you need to do to enable WiFi 6 because the hardware is already doing it.

In theory yes but as touched on, in another comment... It depends on many factors like distance, device capability, and interference. So in the particular example, the iphone 11 doesn't support 160mhz, only 80mhz max. support.apple.com/guide/deployment/iphone-wi-fi-specification-details-dep268652e6c/web

ONT is built into 320 modems. AT&T also utilizes three distinct wavelengths of "light" for their fiber network (GPON, XPON, & ALT) which each SFP is responsible for receiving. However, a GPON SFP cannot receive a XPON signal, incompatible. Essentially, once the signal passes the SFP then the ONT converts light into electrical data, modem converts the electrical data into digital data (1s and 0s) for computing devices. 320 combines all this into one package. I'm a current tech with AT&T, hope this helps! ALSO: Your SFP won't work because every ONT has to be activated and your plug in may not be correct wavelength as said before. The reason for this is that we have "splitters" that basically are segmentations filled with customer signals. The only way to differentiate these signals and not accidentally activate your neighbors gateway under your account is through manual activation in the AT&T database. So, your plug-in may be flagged for one, and also no one is going to activate because your gateway was already activated.

I have a stand alone ONT box with my BGW-210. I have a tech coming out to install the BGW-320.. I should just be able plug into the ONT RJ45 plug on the 320 (and not use the SFP), correct?
@handle854
@handle854 2 жыл бұрын
@@YzerWings if they are installing the 320, the older Ont & 210 Modem will be removed. An sfp will be used with the 320. Although the red Ethernet port is meant to be a rj45 connection to an external ont. it is not standard practice, & will most likely refuse to install the 320 in this way. I’m pretty sure AT&T systems have this feature disabled anyhow to prevent tech laziness so they’ll have to run a new line and relocate the modem. Usually where the original Ont was for the 210 is not an ideal location to put the wireless access point function of the 320. An example would be an Ont installed in the garage, then an Ethernet cables from there running to the living room where the modem / router is. When the tech comes to replace this setup with the 320, Obvi the modem / router being in the garage is a bad idea, quality service-wise. So now the tech will have to re-run the fiber line into the home to install a 320.
@YzerWings

@@handle854 they will definitely not be running a new line across my property. I will tell them to try the ONT RJ45, see if it works. If it does, then he can leave and I can do the rest. Hi there, I recently upgraded my setup to AT&T 5 gig speeds and also upgraded my network setup to the UDM SE PRO, 8 port Aggregation switch, 48 port pro POE switch, Enterprise 8 port POE switch. I am having trouble in getting the SFP+ ports on the switches to deliver 5 gig speeds. They are getting capped at 2.5 gigs. If I connect the PC directly to the UDM SE Pro, I am seeing the 5 gig speeds. I am using Cat6a cables and when I connect to the At&t router directly, I can see the speeds are 5 gigs. For those who want the bgw320: long story short from my struggle with att cs. Say your bgw210 is constantly dropping, request replacement with the bgw320, INSIST that a service appointment is made with a tech to install. The is a necessary modification to the bgw210 ONT to run optical to the new bgw320. You cannot request a mail in replacement to install a 320 for yourself, as att system will “correct” the order made by cs and you’ll get the same old 210 in the mail. The 320 is so much better than the 210, but as a network novice, I really want to find a foolproof way to bypass and use a router with the features I want for gaming and better signal strength.
@UKnowBo
@UKnowBo 3 жыл бұрын
So let me ask you this- can’t att tell that you aren’t really having those problems? Won’t they send a tech out to test it? I’m currently getting ~400mbps on wifi (sometimes more) but only getting ~300/350mbps hard wired to my sons gaming computer. Did you find it hard to convince them to run fiber to where your modem once went? I would love to get this 320 but not sure I can pull it off since I just got it installed and they had to replace the ONT (went from big one to the little one). Last question- what kind of speeds are you getting with the 320 compared to the 210? TIA
@ryanmasters5878
@ryanmasters5878 3 жыл бұрын
@@UKnowBo att can’t tell what your router is “actually” outputting. The stupid att app said the 210 was ALWAYS “1,000/1,000”. Which is crap because I could only get max 400mbps Wifi next to the router and 400mbps even when wired. All I did was tell customer service that my speeds would rise and drop drastically, which it would if I moved from one room to another in my tiny house. This warrants a replacement by their standards, and you can ask (ie demand) for a 320 replacement done by a service tech appointment (the only way to get the 320 is by tech appointment). Once you have an appointment, cost covered by warranty, it doesn’t matter how much work or line they have to run. The $100 cost is the same for any tech appointment, no matter the work, so either you pay or it’s covered by att (this is my understanding correct me if I’m wrong). My old ont was 4’ away from the router, all they did was remove the old powered ont on the wall and run an optical cable to the new 320, so that cable length is dependent on how far your old ont is to your router location. But again, it doesn’t matter the amount of time or materials because the cost is flat rate.

@@UKnowBo speeds are polar opposite to the old 210. 900/900 wired (haven’t tried the 5gig port yet). ~900/600 on Wifi 6 in the same room, tapering lower the further away you get. Signal strength is huge improvement and reaches much further than old 210.

@@ryanmasters5878 Thanks for the input. Very helpful. In my case they will need to run new fiber for ~75’ or so. Then I had to take time off work for the rescheduled appointment just for the guy to drill and install the outside box thingy and took an hour just standing around on his phone. Then he says someone else is going to come that day and install a wire from the street to connect to my house. Surprise surprise nobody fucking came. I've had an infuriating few days with AT&T. Via online chat on Monday, they agreed to ship me the BGW 320. What arrived today was the same old model that I already have (BGW 210, which drops wifi connections all day long). I tried asking them to fix the mistake via online chat, but the rep (and the supervisor that I escalated to) were completely useless and wrote tons of typos and nonsense. So I decided to call. The person I spoke with said there is no way to request a BGW 320 in particular. What I receive will be random. I said it doesn't make sense and is a waste of everyone's time. I asked to speak with a supervisor. The supervisor refused to take the call and said that I *could* request a technician to bring a BGW 320 but that it would cost $450 + installation (required). Obviously I would never agree to that nonsense. I'm so tired of AT&T. What would you recommend I try tomorrow? Thanks for your great video.

The BGW320 has an ONT *built-in*. It is still in your home. The 5Gb port is for speeds beyond 1Gbit hardware on the consumer side. The SFP port is ONLY for the AT&T fiber connection, not for you to hook up to your own hardware. STOP USING PORT FORWARDING and look at using a reverse proxy. Ultimately, if you have a home lab and want to control your connection to the internet, AT&T residential fiber using this gateway isn't going to make you happy.
@algheroman6476
@algheroman6476 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. It looks like this new Gateway does not give you much flexibility for having your own Router and network management behind this BGW. I have a UDM Pro with my current Cable Internet Provider, and all I had to do was to ut their modem into Bridge mode. With this, it will seem to be much more difficult or cause issues with my setup. Also, you seem to be correct that there is no way to go direct fiber into the UDM pro, you still need this BGW 320 to act as the ONT.

Bridge mode? Interesting. I believe att gateways authenticate to the network by MAC address and if I had to guess doesn’t allow 3rd party equipment authentication. In the case of the 320 I’m not sure if the network is looking for the MAC address of the RG or the Mac of the SFP adapter. The SFP adapter used is dependent on the type of splitter in the PFP you are assigned out of where the fiber from the office splits it’s signal into the distribution cable to the field. There’s standard optics, alt optics and the newer gponx splitters that are 64 port splitters as opposed to 32 ports. The BGW 320 I’m looking at right now has a red data port that’s labeled ONT so I’m not sure if you can feed it with an Ethernet cable from an 010 ont like the 210 does or not. If I had to guess I’d say no. I’m about to do a 320 swap coming from a 210 that’s fed by a 010 ont. if anyone knows please post.

I'm very surprised you were able to get them to so easily switch you to the new gateway. I've read on AT&T forums that it's virtually impossible based off the experiences of others. Some users tried it up to three times, but just kept getting the old gateway. I'll be getting the new gateway soon, but ONLY because I'm upgrading to either the 2 gig or 5 gig fiber tier and the BGW 320 is necessary for those speeds. I'm even more surprised that they didn't charge you a fee to come out and switch you to the new gateway. I wish I had done this a year ago. But the difference would be limited because I still would've been using pass through mode.

@@SPXLabs You definitely had it easy. Very surprised the tech didn't say that your old gateway was actually working fine and thus have you charged for the $100 service fee. The techs are CWA members and while they're generally fair, they won't hesitate to charge for their time if they believe it is merrited. One time I called to have a faulty gateway replaced with a newly delivered one, and it resulted in them starting to charge me a $10 per month equipment fee, rather than the inclusion of the equipment at no cost, which is what I had contractually agreed to during my first year of fiber service with AT&T. So that was incredibly annoying. And rather than putting me back on the original monthly promotion that deducted and zeroed out the $10 monthly equipment fee, all they could do was give me a credit of $10 per month, which resulted in me being charged about $1 per month in taxes for the equipment rental fee. Whereas it should've just zeroed out the $10 monthly fee leaving no taxes. Instead I was being charged the $10 fee plus tax and then just credited back $10 per month, which technically left me paying the dollar in taxes per month for the gateway. It wasn't about a dollar breaking me. It was about the principal of them breaking the terms of the contract and trying to charge me any amount at all for the gateway during that first year of service. So I then had to call back and have that additionally adjusted. It was a real pain. And this was all just to have what was actually a defective gateway replaced. The whole experience was VERY frustrating and annoying because I never made a change to my services or consented to a change. It's AT&T's responsibility to provide functioning equipment and holding them to that doesn't authorize them to change the billing arrangement. So I'm really shocked at how smoothly your entire process went in getting the new gateway. You should take advantage of the get the 2 gig and 5 gig speed tiers for at least a month each and then post a review of each new tier to your channel.

Have you found a way to bypass the BGW320 to your UDM Pro yet? I was given a BHW320-505 and have been trying to find ways to not use it and go directly into the UDM Pro with SFP.

I have not. The only thing I haven’t tried yet is different modules. I’m really hoping it’s just a module incompatibility issue. It’s planned on my docket but as you can imagine, many people in my household would not be happy with the internet being down for so long lol

@@SPXLabs With the ONT being built in there is no way as of now. I think it has to do with the security layers the ONT is using. I think it uses a standard GPON on the old 210 setup and allowed ONT to UDM Pro configuration but the setup eliminates the separate ONT and therefore still needs the 320 for the built in ONT. Maybe the new UDM PRO SE might have a way to by pass that all but it is in EA still.

Wouldn't be able to take advantage of anything over a gig anyways because based off of what the BGW320 label says that's just a simple SFP port not a SFP+ port

True but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t roll out a dedicated ONT to the 5GbE or something dumb. It’s such a bizarre product

I love it when people associate gaming and Gig speeds. If all you do is game on your PC and browse anything close to a gig is a waste of money. Now in some areas you mind a well have it only due to cost. For example in Dallas I can get 1Gig plus HBO Max for $60 a month. Where 300Mb is priced at 45. So mind as well get the gig, but I have seen some people have to pay alot more for gig because they either use another service or ATT is just higher in that area. If that's the case 200-400 Services are well above what you need to game.

Are you running the BGW 320 as IP Passthrough? Did you have to give the USG a static IP in that case? Or are you running the USG behind the BGW 320 (with it still enabling DHCP)? I'm less interested in bypassing the hardware, and more interested in only having 1 network, and setting up the USG 320 as purely a gateway.
@SPXLabs

I am using dhcp on the ATT gateway with a 172.16.1.1 subnet and IP passthrough to my router with a 192.168.1.1 subnet and also has dhcp enabled. You can shutoff pretty much whatever you want on the BGW320 to make it like 1 network.
