Replacing the two-part rear main seals or crank seals (crankshaft seals) on my 2000 BMW R1100R oilhead engine. Same sort of process for R1150 engines even with the single seal. Not a difficult job, just be careful/methodical and don’t force things. It is also a great opportunity to take a few other bist apart and have a good clean up while you are in there.
The clutch on this bike had recently been replaced (thankfully no contamination from this seal issue) but I would probably have changed it if it was still the original (57k miles on this bike - one of three oilheads I own at the minute). It’s a recent arrival to the stable with good history but look at the state of that inner seal - what sort of job is that? Looks pretty old to me, if not the original…

Hi john, just an update on my r1100rs. My engine had a single seal and I used the coke can method, the flywheel removal/ refitting was easy. new clutch in and fresh fuel filter plus the intake pipes were replaced by the gs types which have given a useful boost in the midrange. Really enjoying the bike and can’t wait for summer! Thanks for your enlightening video!

Brilliant... I was going to buy a 65mm speedi sleeve, a coke can sounds better and cheaper. Good work. Great video

very very nice job. Does it leak today ? Regarding the manual, you seems to put in the wrong direction the seal, Am I right ?

Thanks Raphaël. No engine leaks now, although the transmission output seal has just started leaking! I have another transmission I can fit and then I will strip and rebuild this one with seals and bearings. This seal is installed correctly, not the wrong way around ;)

Good video, thanks for uploading it! I’m just about to do my seal/s, mine is an early 1100rs so I don’t know if I have a double seal system or a single, Ive bought just the one for now...

Probably a double seal John - you can check the RealOEM website to look at your bike in parts diagrams. I have three 1100RSs at the minute: two ex-Police and one civilian. Great bikes!

John Glynn Thank you for that, I will get the inner seal as well, Ive been advised to do it although the clutch itself is dry, there was a little oiliness down in the lower right hand corner, the area behind the flywheel seems dry, Ive already changed the input shaft seal so I’m not sure where the dampness came from. I’ll find out soon enough!

@@johndglynn I thought so, the ones that came out were copies, they are nothing but trouble even when fitted correctly.

Can you remember the dimensions for me?

@johndglynn 2 жыл бұрын
Which dimensions? BMW will sell you the seals and then you just need a standard 330ml drinks can to fit them.
