Every plumbing house should have someone like this to explain stuff to homeowners. Clear, precise, and yet in layman's terms anyone can understand. Well done.

You provided a very clear explanation and the visuals are self explanatory as to why a homeowner might want to replace the cast iron in stages. Thank-you.

Very good speaking skills. This was created with minimal takes due to your ability to keep thoughts logically flowing in sequence.

I’ve been trying enormously to find a video that will lead me to hands on on repiping my house, and get anything but a bunch of theory instead of the process,

Don’t even try reliving your house, guarantee you fuck something up and will have to pay three times the amount instead of you just let a professional like me do it

Cast iron known to last 60-100 years when properly installed and maintained. PVC tends to fails after about 20-30 years. Glue joints go out and pvc get brittle and cracks

wow. what a renovation! i've heard of tearing down to the studs but I never imagined tearing out trenches in the slab to replace piping. how can this possibly be cost effective? how is the foundation tied back together? is it stable? for how long? i've seen reroutes done with underground trenches, but this is extreme. how can this be cheaper than tear down and rebuild?

Wtf are you taking about dude? It’s all tied back together when the floor is poured back in. People do this all the time? There is nothing extreme about it your just a simpleton

Remodeling is many times much cheaper than tearing down. The permitting process, alone, will take many months to tear down and rebuild.

I would think descale and coat the pipes would be cost effective and less disruptive. Keep the cast iron in the bathroom, plastic pipes are noisy and will drive you nuts with every flush.

What should be an educational guestimate for replacing castiron with ABS / PVC for an under 2000 sq feet house with 2 bathrooms, 2 toilets, (House is built on crowling space, so I assume easy access to all pipes down to the yard, before meeting city's outflow)? Just curious and please if you know the answer or have any kind of the figure in your mind, do not run away from saying it because... Thx

It really depends on the crawl space the 18’’ min is often ignored, if you have a clear 24’’ front to back it’s going to cost 1/2 as much as a 12’’ to 18’’ crawl. Also the main under the house may dive a bit under ground, if it’s buried it’s going to have to be dug up w a coffee can more or less. Often it’s no back filled and goes through/under the foundation around. 12’’ to 18’’. This is alway the case. A clean crawl space, with no cat mess makes a difference too.

Senseless to destroy the integrity of the slab and foundation . Go with cipp lining . It’s a no brained ! It’s typically Trenchless and be completed in 3 to 4 days ! No destruction of flooring or concrete slab also you don’t dissect your slab and foundation that would weaken the integrity of both !

Hi great job as a homeowner understanding the weaknesses of cast iron but I will correct you respectfully on a few things cast iron is still Largely used today for different reasons one of them being it’s strength as you mentioned before buried underground these bell and hub connections can shift and not crush under weight of the dirt and not crack as easy as plastic also cast iron is used indoors sometimes in large buildings because it is quite when water runs through it it’s also used today still because it’s resistant to extremely high temperatures that may be dumped down a drain in industrial applications it’s also resistant to certain chemicals. Also not all companies need to jackhammer the floor like my company we have Trenchless options like pipe liners and pipe bursting

We are gonna have to do something soon even though we can’t really afford $30,000 (my estimate) for replacing old cast iron pipe in slab 1,200 sq ft home. Is the pipe liner really worth it? I’ve heard they fail… what’s your take… and what is the other “bursting” ?
