Replacing Clutch Basket and Discs on Kawasaki 2 Stroke KX125

The parts are finally here!
Today we replace the clutch basket and clutch discs as well as repack the exhaust. This video is more of a how to walk through of the process for these jobs.
The OEM clutch basket was worn past the point of filing the grooves on the fingers so replacement was the best option.

Never use an oven that you intend to cook food in again. This was our old toaster oven that I replaced with a super fancy one so she wouldn't be mad. 🤣😂🤣

What oil do you recommend that I should use to soak my clutch plates in before putting them in my bike, the bike is a 2000 kx125

Definitely soak the plates for a bit before installing. What oil to use is a highly debated topic. The service manual says to use SAE 10w20 or 10w40. Personally, I prefer semi synthetic 10w40.

My gear that touches the one behind the clutch basket that gos to the crank has some play is is supposed to have play has a key way in it

It'd be hard to say without seeing exactly which gear you mean- if you mean the primary gear, then I believe it should have a woodruff key

Freeze the gear while heating the basket.

It was in the freezer for about an hour. If I wasn't so pressed for time I would have left it in over night. 😕

Just curious, im kinda stumped right now. I replace my clutch actuator seal and i needed to take the clutch plate off and when i did i took the 4 bolts holding the plate in and took the plates off to get to the rod in the middle to be able to take my clutch rod out. When I reassembled the plates i keep the pattern from the metal spacers to the plates themselves but i rotated some of them from the original way it was. Does this make a difference in shifting? I tried to put into first gear and bike still moved as if it were in neutral. same with going to 3rd and 4th gear.

wait i think i may have figured out why it won’t go in gear….very stupid question but because i have the front and rear sprockets off as well as chain it won’t go in gear….i’m replacing but was doing the clutch actuator arm seal first…if so i’m sorry for filling your comment section up with nonsense

Rotating the clutch fiber plates won't impact ability to go in to gear, but a misadjusted clutch or the wrong plate order could.

Also, when you are trying to put it in gear is it actually clicking up in a gear and the clutch just won't grab creating resistance? If that's the case you may have something adjusted wrong.

@@alexdombi-weridetwoyes it clicks 1 down and 4 up just fine…i think it’s because i do not have the front sprocket, back sprocket and chain not on and was thinking the bike would go in gear when i rolled it…very rookie mistake

A shop said just to replace the seal i would have to spit the case and since it was in the bottom end of the motor i would have to change the crank and piston and do a full rebuild. You saved me 4k he quoted me. Life savor man

In your disassembly, the washer was on top of the gear and under the plate that's riveted down, but when you put the gear on the wiseco basket you put the spring on first and then the gear ?

I was 95% sure on the order and decided a 5 second clip from this video was enough 😅 I figured it out when my primary gear didn't quite line up. Also when you did your clutch discs, on a kx125 they're cut tangentially and radially the service manual says to do the first and last disc with the cuts facing clockwise. Ok i know this is probably a stupid qeustion but i pulled the inner clutch hub pressure plate off my 01 kx125 and am not sure if its supposed to go on a certain way or not

Can you clarify what you mean by inner clutch hub pressure plate. The pressure plate is the smooth outer piece that houses the springs. Do you mean the clutch hub itself? Or do you mean the spring ring that's between the primary gear and clutch basket?

The pressure plate that houses the springs does not need to be "clocked" or anything. As long as the holes line up for the bolts to thread in to the hub you should be good. If you look at 9:10 that is all you need to do. Are you having issues with it going on?

Did you get the gear to go in the basket by hammer or vise? About how long did you work at it? I'm rebuilding a 02 kx 125 and i can not get the gear to go more then 3/4 of the way in the new basket and thats basket in oven at 450 for 15min and gear in freezer for about 4-5hrs and hammering on it. Does it really take a beating to get it to go? If so I'll keep at it i dont really know what elses to do

I did end up using a hammer and patience. You really don't want to beat the snot out of it and risk it wallowing out the basket. I don't know why it was such a pain for me.

I'd look on a website like Rocky Mountain for your specific model's clutch schematic and verify it is supposed to have one and see if you can buy it. The washers are important for spacing out all the components and keeping the clutch working as it should.
