I watch you feed your animals every day, and I worry about supply. I'm a retired city boy rehabbing a neglected, inherited farm in east Texas, 20° today, year 2, first year house and garage, and am trying to feed off the 21 acres. Have 2 springs and back line is a creek so water ok, 12 fallow acres of coastal still going for cows someday, I fenced 2 acres half wooded, with partition, for 2 new free pigmy goats, will build 2 tractors for chickens and rabbits. Learning much, thanks for your help. Just wish materials weren't so expensive! Watched your old panel coop vid. Will do it with wheels. Slow work for an old man by himself. I also take care of my older demented sister. Son and family may come next year. Busy fencing 2 acres around homestead, for garden and 2 greenhouses. Need to learn how to can this year. I'm originally from Tyler, with kinfolk up in Cass County. I'm down near Houston now, with 13 acres. I retired 5 years ago, and it's just me, so slow going. Plans can get sidetracked pretty easily. Today was a plumber to fix horribly corroded kitchen faucet (super hard water here). Pulled the broken dishwasher and thought that would fix a leak I had. Nope. Found where the rats nested and chewed a pinhole in the PEX line. Plumber will be back tomorrow, now that I've isolated the leak. So, gardens have to wait a couple of days. It will be warmer by Monday, too.

If you have even a small yard you could probably have 3-4 hens. Just pick a docile breed. We had 6 hens when we lived in a neighborhood and it was great. I couldn't go back to store bought eggs after that. And my kids have grown up thinking blue chicken eggs are the norm.

@@sweetpie7919 I do. I have a “kitchen garden” right outside my lanai with basil, green onions, rosemary, chives. I just started a nice pot of micro greens. I am going to dehydrate my herbs and pack them up. I’m glad it’s screen in. Deer and other animals would eat it all in one night!

Mornin yall! We have started fermenting our feed for our geese, ducks, chickens, peafowl, Guineas, and turkeys! We can feed less and it makes the nutrients more readily available for absorption for the animals. It creates a "living feed" and we have seen a HUGE difference in our animals and in our feed cost!

There are some great instructional videos on KZbin that show you how to do this. They go into lots of detail, such as set-up costs and set-up styles for different amounts of available space and also include things like preventing mold from starting in you started grain mix. Much more than I can go into here.

Same. Been fermenting for years. A side bonus is the poop smells way less and varmints aren’t attracted as the feed is immediately eaten without them spreading it all over.

OH MY WORD! You are going to LOVE the American Bresse chickens! I started my journey with this breed last summer. We processed our first round of roosters - kept all the hens and two roosters for sustainability. These chickens taste better than anything we've ever had. We hatched out our first clutch six weeks ago, and the hatch rate was higher than any other breed we've raised. We are so happy to be sustainable, not relying on a hatchery for our birds again.

I have been watching your channel for several years now even though I am a single woman, 70 years old, and living in the suburbs of my state capital. I don't have any animals and have just a few raised beds for planting. I enjoy your channel because I learn so much from you and appreciate that you explain your reasoning behind any project you undertake. I had heard about the bird flu but did not realize the extent that it has spread. Your explanation of the steps you are taking to safeguard your homestead was an eye-opener. I am 80 this year and disabled - But, I have 8 hens and a rooster and a Banty as a nanny (she broods and is a great mother) to the huge babies. I also have incubated them and got over 95% babies. But, am now considering quail because they would be easier for me to take care of - but not sure I want little birds for eating. So far, I have not eaten my own birds, but others have and said they were delicious. If things get real bad - guess I will have to do that. UGH! I did have to give up my goats because they take a lot of attention and could not automate as much for them as I do for the chickens. Water is the big issue - especially today when there is no way I can get to the hen house in this ice/snow we had - but it will be gone by tomorrow afternoon and then I will check them. You could do quail in the suburbs (some even do it in apts (don't think I could do that - STINK) And, in 6 weeks, you would have meat and lots of little eggs, but good eggs.

My uncle Cotton lived near Holiday Texas in the 1950s on a ranch. He was an oilfield pumper and rented the ranch house. Part of the agreement for renting the house was that he would take care of and milk 14 cows. He had a lot milk to use for feed. He mixed the milk with ground millet and allowed in to ferment before feeding it to pigs.

When I was young on the farm we used all the excess and spoiled milk, table scraps, vegetables and mash in a 55 gallon drum the hogs loved it …they were basically range fed in a way but put up a while before butchering and fed grain .

My favorite breed, when we had chickens, was Buff Orpington. I chose them because they are dual-purpose and Calm. They were so calm that our 3 yr old brought the rooster into the house and into our bedroom. "Look, dad! Look!" The rooster looks at my DH, making a long, low, resigned "brock". We still laugh about it all these years later. Growing up I had Leghorns and there was no way I was going to have those with young kids around. Can't tell you how many times the stupid rooster would chase us to the bus. Or how many times each of us were pecked in the legs.

Wow, we must have been thinking the same. I ordered the American Bresse from a farm in Alabama. I'm also getting Dorkings. My father before he died wanted me to raise them. It was a breed they raised years ago before the Cornish Cross was introduced. Next year I hope to raise all my own, now I need to get the incubator Kevin talked about a while back. The Breese is to be one of them most delicious chickens out there. I seriously can't wait!

Listening to your logic is invaluable! I do my research as well, and hey, YOU are one of my resources. Last year I was a gardener. This year, I’ve got a coop under construction, baby chicks staying warm in my bathroom (wha…?) and a plan to add some meat rabbits (caged and in the predator-proof chicken run). Thank you so much for sharing your new venture with American Bresse chickens! My husband and I are nearing retirement and we have been researching getting back into raising chickens. We had previously only raised chickens for eggs, but have been thinking about now also raising for meat. Unfortunately, we live in an area where avian flu has become an issue and several farms around us have had their birds dispatched. We may have to wait until next year, but we are going to at least move forward and get things situated for when it will be safe to start raising chickens again. I am doing exactly the same thing but I have just a little bit more than the Plymouth Rock my plan is to breed some so I never run out of fresh chicken sell some eggs and eat the rest breeding your own you can cross a few and make a good hybrid chicken for food

We have those chickens. Going to try hatching some this spring. They’re nice chickens. Friendly and they grow big. Not too bad egg layers. We put a heat lamp in the coop this winter and they’ve been laying pretty much every day

Good morning 🙏😊 thank you for another great video! So much good information as always. We have 10 chickens 5 each of Rhode Island Red and Black Australorp. 8 are hens and the 2 roosters are the Rhode Island reds. Both are dual purpose but as of now we are only using them for eggs. At first my plan was to not have any roosters but I am happy that we ended up with them so that we can keep our flock going without depending on other suppliers. I look forward to each of your videos and am thankful that I found your channel! We woke up to about 6” of snow today and it is still snowing! Yesterday was 64 degrees here and sunny! Lol. Yes, Simeon of the Sweden Homestead did a long series on raising Breast Chickens on their homestead before moving their family to Austria, They are an amazing bird and he did an excellent job of telling the history of the breed. Plus I do recommend your new subscribers to view your Cornish Chickens vs. the Freedom Ranger chickens, not only will they see the huge cost difference in raising the to breeds but the will also get the master class of "Nerdy Chicken Math!" I dared not missed those videos at breakfast when you guys had the time to vlog daily, now running to properties it's amazing that you are still able to put out two quality videos a week. :)

@@donaldmiller8629 True, with Kobalt being found on the homestead with government threatening to take over the land, their lifestyle there was in doubt. In moving to Austria to start their homesteading school was killed of by the pandemic and global shutdown..... so watching to young family of six survived these challenging obsticles place before them is a great story in itself to follow. Not everyone's homesteading story is turning butter and picking daisys!

These are our favorite breed to raise in our flocks. Great breed, phenomenal size and wonderful taste. Remember what you feed them and how you raise them, that will determine their taste too. The only poultry breed that enzymes it's food. Glad you found them and welcome to being an American Bresse raiser!

Guys it's crazy but I watched the video Saturday night and Sunday afternoon I saw a lady about 25 miles away that has some Bresse chicks for sale. So we have made arrangements to pick them up in a few days and will be trying out the Bresse as well. I'm trying just like yall to make it where everything we need we grow here and don't have to order anything in. We love that y'all do your best to educate and not just entertain. Avian flu is usually brought onto farms by wild migration birds in the area, snow geese, Canadian geese flying over your farm and droppings ingested by your flock. America Bresse chicks are very pricey. Please keep us updated on this venture. I still plan on running cornish cross this year.

Yes, droppings from migrating birds is one of the main routes of infection! Hence the recommendations are to keep birds in covered runs and remove access to wild birds and their droppings. Sucks for many who free range!

I remember one spring when I was over my ears in eggs and made the chickens some oven-panncake made of only flour, water, some butter and their own eggs. That was some of the best, most fluffy and thick panncake I've ever made. They ate like kings for weeks.

Yes Sara , considering that we are only a little over a year in , I expect that the situation will get much , much worse before it gets better. IF it ever does get better. Also , you can expect that the economy is NEVER going to go back to President Trump levels !

I've been hearing great things about the Bresse! I'll have to look in to them. We ended up replacing our Cornish cross with muscovy ducks for their delicious flavor and good size.
