No worries. I'm from Australia, it's interesting to see the difference in the process between what you do and what's done here. I'm a landscaper, so do a bit of concreting. I always use a base gravel and a moisture barrier (like plastic sheet) on structural stuff, as well as what we call bar chairs. Which might be what you call a Dolby? We use sheets of reo, that typically come in 8 x 20 foot sheets that have about 3/8 bar at 8 inch centres. We work in metric here so my imperial measurements might be a bit out.

Question, I’ve seen three different way to prepare the surface before the pour. Compacted bare dirt. Compacted crushed rocked base. Compacted crushed rock base then compacted sand. What factors decide which base prep to use?

I replaced a lot of concrete in this parking lot over the years, and not one crack or any movement. So the way I did it is native soil compacted, 5" deep with #3 rebar on 18" centers.
@messygreasyhand54658 жыл бұрын
i have watched few of your clips and i don't ever see you use sand or aggregate as base. Any reason for that? We rain quite often in CA now, especially storm coming in 2 days. Wouldn't be better to add sand/aggregate for drainage purpose ??
@OdellCompleteConcrete8 жыл бұрын
MessyGreasy Hand it's a good idea to use base in front of a rain storm if you plan on having a open hole. my work is remove and replace. I schedule so I can do that in between storms, that way the dirt never gets wet.

Nice work man! quick question on the video you mention 3500psi whenever I do driveways I do 4000psi.. since you add fiber mesh, 4000psi is not necessary if fiber mesh is present?

This might be a dumb question. When you see sidewalks around homes, or around your neighbourhood, Youll always see the lines from the 10" walking edger. Why do finishers do this? especially on a gorgeous home front patio.. you always take them out and it looks great. Is it pure laziness, or is it a trend? maybe makes it harder for skateboarders?
@JG-pw5cr6 жыл бұрын
Dave is the expert with concrete but that sort of a smooth border with the middle having the broom finish is just another way to give it a different visual look and I know i've seen it in a bunch of places and its actually the way that my parents wanted the outdoor concrete patio and driveway to look. I think it looks cool and different. Another thing some people do is give it the broom finish but maybe use a wavy pattern or some sort of random fashion or not parallel to the direction of travel. I've even seen some people have alternating broom finish directions so from some angles it looks like a checkerboard or some other pattern. Or even a combination of finishes to make eye catching decorative patterns.

How thick is that concrete? Looks around 4 inches? No wonder why the concrete is cracking, there's heavy traffic constantly applying pressure to it. In Australia, usually car parks are around 6-8 inches thick.

mmbupbup I imagine everything is better in Australia. Am I right?

mmbupbup This parking lot was done in the 70's. It defiantly wasn't built to last. you should see the parking lot next door same company did that one to, but it has had zero maintance. Now it's a total loss.
@mmbupbup7 жыл бұрын
I didn't mean that in Australia being better, was just comparing the regulations. I'm pretty sure you Americans are cluey with construction/engineering. May I ask, I've watched a few of your videos you don't use a screed? And have two men screeding the concrete? It's funny how we all do things differently around the world. By the way, your work is very nice.

Also, just a idea if you have extra re-bar apply it to corners, as you know, the corners is usually wear it cracks from. Applying the rebar cross ways on the corner, will strengthen those corners and if it was to crack it will grip on the rebar and stop it from opening.
@OdellCompleteConcrete7 жыл бұрын
mmbupbup good idea.

Hey concrete gurus I use a subcontractor to pour my driveways and he does a great job I have a customer that's complaining at the end of their apron is cracking where you pull into the driveway. I checked my guys work throughout the process and everything looked good. The cracks are in a span of about a foot and goes into the driveway about 4 inches. It looks to me that someone backed up onto it before the 7 days we tell them to wait. Anyway to verify this by the crack pattern

It's too bad that you guys weren't contracted to rip the whole thing out and properly do it. No rebar, low psi concrete, and thin is a recipe for cracksville disaster in a parking lot.
