No, the outer boot only comes out after the inner boot comes out. This saves tons of time, axle seals and circlips, if you replace them. But he didn't pack it with grease
@robobrien6967
@robobrien6967 Жыл бұрын
@@uenragedbro so two snap rings my bad and no one ever replaces the axle seals unless they were previously leaking it literally would take about the same amount of time as this literally as this car sit he could just pop the axle out and break the clamps holding the inner and outer boot on pop the ring out split the axle shaft pop the second ring off and remove the outer boot and reassemble with grease the rings literally pop out easy as hell it's not hard and usually when yo by a cv axle rebuild kit you get everything to do this including grease but the time it takes to rebuild a cv axle is like nothing however you still need you get the knuckle out of the way that's where all your times at so this tool is useless and a waste of money
@robobrien6967

In my comment I describe how I would use a split Boot and never have a problem with it back in the nineties. The big thing is you did not have to take anything apart. If you're going to take apart this far well rebuild the shaft with new CV joints or just replace it. Of course you better check and probably should only pull one shaft at a time and be sure to put the plug in so not to screw up the alignment or lose fluid. It all depends on the car. Like the old Mitsubishi in the Dodge 600 and what have you. You did one side at a time.
@deant876
@deant876 Жыл бұрын
Back in the early 90's when I became an auto mechanic, they sold speedy repair boot. The problem with putting a new boot on an axle that has split open, is all of the moisture and dirt that got into the axle while it was open. You have gone this far into reairing the boot, just spend the extra $100-$150 and replace the axle. Or you will be replacing it anyway in a year when the dirt wears out the joint

So if your axle you got not too long ago, or is in good condition, needs a boot, throw it away? Uh, no. Change the boot. There is something called brake cleaner. As for the gluing, many cv boots are glued. There's cyanoasghu cv n g in glue (super glue) and well agents (rubber vulcanizing glue). With no gaps, it'll last years.

While this could be true I gotta say no in my case. Changed a inner boot 4 years ago about 50,000 miles later and still running good. It all depends how much the boot was ripped and how long it was ripped for. I caught mine in a matter of a day or 2. Seen that motha oil all over the floor lol

Back in the eighties and specialty through the nineties they used to sell a split boot. You did not have to take anything apart. And the secret was to Put ATV clear silicone to 25-year version. Put it along that scene and then screw it together with the little screws that came with it. Then I would use Gates water and heater hose clamps plus a ATV at both ends and let us set a couple of days. Remember back then Gates clamps were fantastic! But I never had one of them to leak. How to do it for other people without any guarantees and usually on the weekends or when I had two days off in a row. Have them come back for the car 4 days after I was finished. I think I only charge anywhere from 35 to 50.00 plus the $7 for the boot. It was good spending money. If I was going to take this apart this far I would probably just pull the axle put the plug in. Replace the whole axle or at least the CV joints and not just the boots 👢. But I love this tool that this guy has

@@modifiedmechanix I have a shop. Most axles are nearly shot by the time they get a "boot service". They have usually been ripped for at least enough time for the grease to fling out and dirt to contaminate them. What's that tool cost 400 bucks. What do you charge to put the boot on? From what the video looks like you have to take off the same amount or more to get the room for the tool. One more step and the old worn out axle is popped out and the new one can be installed. I dont see the value in this. Constant velocity shaft should be replaced 90 percent of the time! Replacing the boot is a hack job. I have also seen ripped boots caused by metal from the CV coming apart from the inside.
@modifiedmechanix
@modifiedmechanix Жыл бұрын
@name-less7268 these would be normally be used on one's that were noticed in routine maintenance or just happened to caught before any click or damage could be felt. We get alot of mud and hunting rigs in and it's normally a puncture from brush or rocks wouldn't suggest it to a shop that doesn't less than 5 or 6 a week buts its makes its money back after you do a couple

That's a REALLY bad idea. You have wear& dirt/ road grime in the hyphoid gear this is why EVERY tech manual is going to say remove,clean,inspect,then re-install boot& grease.Then re-install axle

This would be more for one with a fresh cut or pin hole that hasn't been exposed to the elements. Have done 1000s over the years and not one issue

@@modifiedmechanix ok But stretching the boot like that ,can't be good doing it the easy way & doing it the right way. Aren't always the same thing. I've replaced 100's of constant velocity shafts over the years. It's far more efficient. To just R&R the damn thing. And considering hourly labor costs these days. Likely a better deal for your customer. And an hours less labor for you. a CV shaft $60 to $80 from your supplier. As opposed to $125 an hr for labor. I'd say your a crook. And give the profession a bad name

@@geoffreycalligan9438 the boots are designed for that. I wouldn't try that with an oem boot

The labor for that tool would cost 20x the cost of replacing the 45 dollar shaft.. stupid is, stupid does.

@@modifiedmechanix somewhat makes sense, as its been almost 10 years since selling them and installing them. But I would expect that labor rates have increased the same percentage as the part pricing? In which it still makes sense to replace vs added labor for just the boot. Same cost would get you a new or remanufactured one for same time price and effort, no?
@modifiedmechanix
@modifiedmechanix Жыл бұрын
@davepalmer9265 pretty much the labor rate is about the same. For example this part number 33-20-7-581-017 is over $1200. But that's an extreme example buts its pretty common to see them in the $400-500 range. With an unreal back order. Not to mention, I haven't found one that the 2 different sizes of boots don't fit. It's a lot easier to have a few boots on the parts shelf than 50 different axles

Not only are the $45 dollar axles cheap Chinese crap that will start leaking and clanking in a few months, some axles are welded into the shaft and don't come off easy. It took my mechanic 2 hours of banging and blow touching to get a stuck axle out. This comes in handy in such situations
