For me, it was noticing extra vibrations in the pedals and steering wheel. It slowly got worse over time, so you kind of get used to it as it ages. Regardless, if you're high mileage (above 180k), it's probably a good idea to replace it.

My car was idling a tad bit higher than usual. I wish I had recognised it as the time but unfortunately it snapped on me instead. I thought I’d blown the flywheel with all the noise it made as it limped to the mechanic. All is well now with a new one installed

why didn't you change out the bushing in the subframe bit, isn't that the highest wear item of the mount?

The dogbone bushing was replaced earlier this year. The mount itself (which has a smaller bushing) was just a forgotten piece when replacing all of the other bushings in the front end.
