Replacing Electric brakes on a trailer

hi guys today I'm going to walk you through the process of replacing electric trailer brakes and checking and repacking bearings
we have just returned from cooktown and have done a heck of a lot of corrugated roads, unfortunately our magnets and the activating arms have disintegrated so we are going to swap them over for a brand new set of backing plates from vehicle components/cruisemaster
these backing plates are there 12 inch All terrain brakes and have been extensively field tested,
so we thought we would give them a go.
part of replacing the brakes is the drums them self. its a good idea if changing the backing plates or just changing the shoes and magnets to also machine the drum itself for even contact and efficient braking

Tip: If you are going to reuse your bearing, keep the same sets matched together, if you send your drums out for machining, make sure the same bearing goes into the same race when you reinstall. Quickest way to get a bearing failure is to swap races!

Great video thank you, just a safety thing to note if you are doing this with just a jack is always have the van hitched to a vehicle so that it cannot twist and roll off the jack, and never get under a van thats on a jack, by the way I really like the adjustable ride height system you have.

Hi Michael I had the stabilizer legs down on the van and the jockey wheel. Wasn’t going anywhere. But that is a very handy tip. The airbag system was awesome makes leveling up at camp a breeze.

Thanks for the video but when you removed your inner seal the screwdriver thing you did is not the way to go flip the drum over and just tap it out with the flat screwdriver from the other side much easier

Sure did. As the brake pads and drums have been changed. The brakes need adjusting to suit this. There is a slot in the back of the brake backing plate and can be adjusted through that. Hope it helps

@@twinsepicadventures4006 I have a dual axle caravan and looking at changing only the rear RH backing plate and brake hub. Keeps getting hot brake hub, repacked bearings 4 times and got a good mechanic to adjust brakes and repack bearings. So I’m just going to replace the lot. Is it ok just to replace one and leave the other 3? Brake linings, hubs and bearings are fine on the other 3, they don’t get hot. It’s could be a few things wrong to explain why it gets hot but I’ll start with new gear rather than stuff around with old.
