Replacing My Fifth Wheel Landing Jacks Gear Box

Last spring I had to do a temporary repair to get my Keystone Cougars fifth wheel front landing jacks working. A plastic piece had sheared off the gear box.

My fix has worked great but rather than tempt fate I decided to replace it with a new one. This video details the installation process. I also decided to install a different brand gear box made of aluminium and needed to do a little modding to get it to work.

It’s 2024, and I just made this same repair on my ‘08 Cougar! She’s an old girl, but an awesome layout and I’ve been keeping up with repairs and upgrades. Thank you for your blog post and this video. It saved me some panic when my landing gear started making interesting noises.

Thanks for the video! My 29' Cardinal has a gear box which started making funny noises and now the motor just spins freely. Now I know how to take it apart after UR video. The gear box here is a Venture, it looks quite similar to yours.

Hi Ray, loved this and your other videos. I have a Keystone Cougar 276RLS which looks like the same RV you have, so I consider myself double lucky that I found your channel. One thing I'd like to add is something I did wrong - hopefully it may help someone else from making the same mistake. Like you mention in the video, the landing gear motor should be removed by loosening the slotted head screws only - do not remove the bolts that require a hex wrench. I removed all four and the two parts of the motor's casing came undone and the gears fell out. I got the gears (four of them) back together again and they seemed to operate well. I was pretty happy about the whole situation until I tried to fit the two parts of the casing back together again. I can't get them to seal - there is an approximate 1/8" gap. I was wondering if you or your viewers have ever encountered the situation where they could not get the casing to the motor to seal. If so, I would really appreciate the advice. Thanks!

do you have to block up the RV while doing this, or will it stand on the legs?

It will stay standing just fine. Inside the legs is a long vertical worm gear and at the top a set of beveled gears. Ray I cannot identify which reduction gear box is on my rv. The shaft is 1/2 inch diameter in leg and key shaped going thru reduction box. In your video you swapped gears to make yours work. Any thoughts on what part number or brand is on my camper. Thanks!!

Hi. I replaced the gearbox and greased the gears. The jacks will retract, but fuse pops when I try to raise the camper... ????

Could be too low of amperage fuse. Mine uses a 30 amp or a bad motor drawing too much amperage or something is binding like one of the landing legs. Ray, my landing gear motor and gear work if no load. But it has started to. Make a clicking noise, rather than lift or turn the jack. Do u think it is just the gear? Motor, gear and jack are a couple years old. Thanks.

Clicking sure sounds like a bad gear. You can try using the manual crank to see if it's the motor or the gearbox that's the problem. Love Your RV _ Ray the clicking is from the slip clutch that is attached to the motor, between the gears. If I get a new motor it should come with. But do you know if I can just get the slip clutch?

I did this replacement and was working fine till one day it would go down but wouldn't go up. Has power, would hit the button to go up, and it would try to move the bar, but it couldn't turn it. Replaced the gear box and motor. Idk what the issue is now.

Make sure the battery has a good charge and the wiring and connections are good. It take a lot more power to lift than go down. Also could be one of the legs jamming up. I'd test them individually if you can get it onto a truck to hold the weight safely. Cheers, Ray

Just ran into the same problem 3 yrs after seeing this video. Atwood bought out by Dometic. Dometic destroyed all the molds or jigs so these parts are no longer available.Options are used parts or replace whole system with Dometic. My understanding is Domestic's bolt patterns are the same.Parts may be online if your lucky.

Not as far as I can see. I doubt it as found if you push it to far it will blow a 30 amp fuse.

You took the old gear which was giving you a problem and the put it in the new gear box. What am I missing here. Did you not just shoot your self in the foot? Why did you change it to begin with? What am I missing?

How did you determine which gearbox to buy?

I couldn’t find any markings indicating the make and model of the landing gear but through trial and error comparing pictures online I narrowed it down to an Atwood product and the gearbox part number to 70754. I was going to buy this replacement part I found on Etrailer.com, but noticed they had a different part made by Stromberg Carlson that was almost exactly the same. The big difference for me was the Stromberg part was made from aluminum and the Atwood is plastic. Since that didn’t serve me very well already I decided to order the Stromberg Carlson - www.etrailer.com/p-LG-179015.html. As it turns out though the part had a slight difference. The crescent-shaped opening for the landing leg gear shaft was slightly smaller, making it impossible to attach to the landing leg drive shaft. I got around this by swapping out the main gear from my original gearbox into the new one and made it work.

On mine, there were a few metal burrs around the screw hole on the shaft. I filed them off and the sleeve came off easy.
