DIY boat rigging to save money! This week is all about replacing our Passport 42’s standing rigging. In case you don’t know what that is, its all of the stainless steel wire cables that hold up our mast and a is very important part of a sailboat. We found a crack in a deck level fitting. This prompted making an appointment with the local professional rigger, who suggested he do a thorough rig inspection. While the aluminum mast and fittings are thankfully in good shape, he found too many questionable areas on the wire cables themselves and the fittings that were on the ends of them.
So now, the moment has finally arrived. Our new rigging has been delivered. Don't look down!

Just a suggestion, when using tools that high find a way to attach a short hand lanyard to your tool in case it slips out of your hand. Avoid the hole that tool will make dropping from that height. After using tool place back into your tool bag slipping off the hand lanyard.

Next time, put reusable fittings (I prefer Hi-Mod, they are better looking and just as strong) on the tops. That way you don't have to pay a rigger to put on swaged fittings. You can do the entire replacement in the future on your own anywhere, anytime. Also, the sealant in the fittings blocks out oxygen which contributes to corrosion with stainless, it needs to be exposed to oxygen. Most corrosion with stainless occurs where it isn't exposed to oxygen. Put a toggle between the top fitting and the tangs to allow the cable to pivot and eliminate the cable kinking at the junction of the swaged fitting.

Honestly there's only so much you can "service" anyway. In terms of seal or no seal, the industry changes their mind on this every few years or so. So depending on who you talk to, and who they got their advice from, they will tell you different things. Sealing either keeps rust out or "locks water in". I can see both points. Good job just going with what the manufacturer says to do. That's exactly what you should be doing.

Great job guys! A comment regarding tension of your rig, duplicating the previous tension may not be the best choice. It is advised that stainless wire be tensioned to 10% of its breaking strength. So the ideal method would be establishing the trim of your mast ie. rake and plumb or duplicating the previous trim if it is satisfactory then tensioning to the correct value for your cable diameter. I have Staylocks on my rigging (both top and bottom) and I never considered NOT using sealant. That is what pro riggers had done on my boat in the past and I just continued. I didn't read Staylock's instructions so thanks for bringing this important error to my attention. Thanks, Ben S/V DAWN

Hey Ben! Yes actually I consulted Steve in the end because after he mentioned in the rigging part 1 episode that they could have more tension on them, we started from scratch making sure the mast head was on centerline, and then dialed in the rake and went from there. It turned out great! Thanks for your comment 😄

One of our insurance markets requires the standing rigging be replaced every 10 years! However, that is a market of ours that allows for international travel through the Indian Ocean to the South Pacific and whatnot so they're going to be more finicky than others, naturally!

Is heating the stay-lok fitting acceptable? Heating stainless changes its properties. At best you can passivate the heated part to bring the stainless properties back, but only to a point.
@Cptnbond

I was also concerned about the torch heating. When you apply heat to steel, you will reduce its hardness and toughness. A big no no for me. But as the title say; 'with no experience' ; they will eventually learn with time. Cheers.
