Were is the anti oxidation compound on the aluminum feeders and a tie down bracket for the main breaker? ... Was the neutral in the meter base repaired?

I have a 100 amp breaker without on/off switch. Overheated. Attempted to replace with same type breaker but has on off switch but won’t stay in on position. None on the shelf will. Does it need to be powered for it to stay on? Is this a new safety feature or? I’m stumped!

Is it normal for it to feel warm for normal use of the house and or when there’s hardly anything on to nothing but hot to where u can’t touch it and what would cause this type of stuff to happen

Is a main breaker the same internally as a branch feeder or is the layout reversed so the connection to the buss bar is what protected?

anti-oxidation compound on the bare service wires is a good practice. I use it on copper wires that are subject to high amperage. Use a wire brush to get into the stranded conductors. I have a tool box with just the tools for applying anti-oxidation compound.

I'm an electrical apprentice... please correct me if I'm wrong...I first thought is ,that breaker is overloaded or there is a lose connection on the breaker terminals...as for it being the neutral, if its a neutral I would think everything in the house would be burned. last if its a short wouldn't it be tripped lol ........please correct me ....not I did not read comment before this comment. trying to test myself. please help
@zippitydoodah56934 ай бұрын
You are correct. THe proper first move after a visual inspection would be to "amp out" the branch circuit conductors to see what load is on them. If they are pulling 100 amps then they are overloading the breaker and the subpanel its feeding needs to load shed.
@daniellobo16805 жыл бұрын
The breaker was in the ON position when you started trying to replace it back into the panel? Is that safe?
@BudaMac4 жыл бұрын
He unplugged the meter outside so there was no power being fed to the panel.

When you checked the other breakers were you simply tightening all the leads to insure proper connection?
@Askexpertexpress9 жыл бұрын
Snazzy Architecture yes over time the connections will become loose due to expansion and contraction a loose connection can cause a fire as well
@texasjourneyman2077 жыл бұрын
did u do a load test

here is a thought maybe an oversized breaker on the electric heating ..... pulling more than what was before any electric baseboard was put in place....?? just a guess....

I don't see anyone mentioning the elephant in the room. The breaker box is full of cobwebs even on the side of the main breaker. Did someone leave the cover off the panel for an extended period of time. Could all the cobwebs and filth be causing part of or contributing to the issues?
@zippitydoodah56934 ай бұрын
The elephant in the room is that he never tested the load to see if it was maxing out the circuit. If his 100A sub panel is regularly pulling 100A then OF COURSE it will be running hot to touch. But we'll not know because he didn't check it.. This is the equivalent to not checking the gas gauge when your car stops suddenly while driving.

So you can remove a meter with live power going into it ?
@adammonahan6874 жыл бұрын
Theres always power going to the meter. Constantly
@JesusG902474 жыл бұрын
The way that I would do it.... I would shut off all the loads and then disconnect the meter so it won't be under load...
@tier3rd3754 жыл бұрын
Meters are designed to be removed while still live. This is how the power company disconnects the power from an individual house if the customer fails to pay their bill.
@zippitydoodah56934 ай бұрын
Dude. The first thing you should have done is ampprobe the conductors being fed from the overheating breaker to see what LOAD is being pulled.

just replace the panel were not talking alot of money...you will sleep better at night for sure...looks like you need a bigger ground from the neuteral bar to the ground rod...that bare ground in the meterbase is cute but its worthless....I wouldnot ground the meterbase unless its metal conduit
