Welcome to episode 39 of the wooden boat liveaboard journey. In this episode I replaced another rotten frame along with a section of rotten mahogany planking and ribs.
My channel is dedicated to sharing the process of restoring and repairing a beautiful 1940 Seaplane Tender into a fully functional liveaboard.
The boat is a 1940 seaplane tender initially used by the Royal Air Force during WW2. The hull is built of double diagonal mahogany hull planking and oak ribs. My parents bought this boat more than 30 years ago and used it for weekend trips up the lake. Unfortunately, as they became busy with work it was left idle for many years falling into disrepair. So I've started to invest time into repairing the boat and transforming it into a liveaboard.
I upload weekly episodes here on my KZbin channel, so make sure to subscribe not to miss out.
Thanks for the support and as always stay productive and have fun creating!

Love watching the work you do on this boat and how you fleet with H&S but you get it done. My question is about the obvious sunken yacht in the lake behind your boat? Can you comment on one of you next videos perhaps. All the best.

Good idea recycling wood. I use almost all recycled lumber on my 27’ wooden boat. In fact I have an attic full of good used lumber that I have collected over the years. It really cuts down on cost!

Hi, this is a really fascinating project, and a lovely boat. With regard to wood hardener, I have used the Rustins wood hardener before on an external windowsill, it did a great job. There was constant drip from a leak that was falling onto it for years and had started to rot it out. I had no problems after I used the rustins!

Keep on trucking with the old girl. You have already come a great distance and once the rest of the rotten wood is replaced you are good to go. With your addition of heat for the cold winters, all you need now are some curtains to have an actual "Liveaboard". Please don't take this the wrong way, but be damned sure to have not one, but two good bilge pumps on her, as you finish up all the basic hull construction. You don't want to come down and see that the boat has become a submarine. Looking forward to seeing you get started on the propulsion for her.

Hmmm, before he'll have an actual liveaboard, he'll need running water, power, toilet and ideally a shower, galley, sleeping berth, table and seating. THEN, maybe, the curtains!

Instead of using Git-Rot you can use a laminating epoxy, that will soak into the wood. Use the slowest hardener that you can find. Laminating epoxy is also good for adding layers of fiberglass at a later time without sanding. Then a finish epoxy for the finish coat, that will harden all of the epoxy. I also use fine saw dust as a thickener for these repairs.

I think it’s really good of you to use recycled Oak where possible 👍 Looking forward to seeing the fibre glassing & your boat beginning to look like your vision.

Good work. Remember also that this is good training. Learning to identify areas of concern, how far to cut back, different methods of repair, etc. plus you get the benefit of the results.

Not sure if you are mixing old screws and new screws for this reconstruction, however, be damned sure you have a ton of zinc on the old gal to prevent electrolysis, You will need to check from time to time about electrolosis, but this is not a game changer. Love your work ethic!

I try not to as much as possible. Currently I am using brass screws pretty much everywhere. A few repairs we needed much bigger screws and stainless had to be used.

I think buying a few good blades for the multi tool would be a good investment. Poor angle-grinder RIP.. some good jobs sorted. great video 2x👍

You can get wood cutting blades for angle grinders. I just got one that turns it into a very aggressive rotary wood rasp.

you need to grab yourself a sawzall for when you need to cut out old frames and such. It makes those kinds of jobs go much easier. when you get sawdust caught in the brushes they will catch on fire.
