The great thing about videos like this. Is that they help people like me who live in an area where there are no bike shops.

I just bought this same exact bike for $25 as my first mtb bike. When I showed up to pick up the bike all the bolts and cables were rusted, and every black part was faded from the sun but the paint and chain and gears were in great shape. Bought new cables, soaked every bolt in evaporust and sprayed every black part with black restorer spray and got her looking brand new. Watched a couple of your videos of how to do maintenance and the bike runs so smooth now. Spent a total of about $50 and I couldn’t be any happier. Thank you!

I actually just found the exact same bike for $120 last Monday, April 16th! The guy I bought it from bought it new in 2005, rode it 50-60 miles, parked it in his garage and never touched it since. I brought it home, wiped it all down and realized it was technically still brand spanking new! The only thing that I have replaced was the chain, I put a nice 10 speed chain on it and shifts so smooth. It's definitely a great 24 speed bike, hardly any scratches on it and the shocks work like a dream...shifts like a dream and definitely looks like it came right off the showroom floor. Even the shifter gear indicator windows are still clear as glass. No yellowish tint whatsoever, not bad for a 13 year old mint condition Trek 4300!... I love this video as well as all of your other tutorial videos, I've definitely got alot more love for bikes and bicycling because of you. Keep doing a great job and never stop biking and repairs. Thanks RJ!

Ryushi Shiratori, you generally want to have them on the smallest gears when fitting the cable. An exception is a Shimano Rapid Rise rear derailleurs which you would have the chain on the biggest cog when fitting the cable.

Wow i should have bought Trek 820 or Trek in general. I bought a GT Agressor 3.0 today from craiglist. 1st bike and its in poor shape. I was discouraged and thought i should get my money back. Like that will happen. The brakes are shot. The gears dont shift that well. The shimano gear shift is missing its tops. The gear lines are exposed and rusted. Chain rusted and rear derailleur needs replacement. Then i see your video and im actually looking foward working on this bike. Thank you sir. Great instructions and camera angles.

Here's a trick that might work: When trying to hold your brakes tight on the rim to tighten new cable, try using a plastic cable tie around the pads. Snug the cable tie up tight, pull the brake cable and tighten the hold bolt and then simply snip the cable tie.

Another tip that might help is: If you find you need 3 hands to put the brake cable in (I do as a stripped the alloy and now have a bolt through with a steel nut on the back) - I sometimes put the cable into the clamping bit with the noodle OUT, but I've made an estimate as to the correct length. I don't tighten too much, put the noodle in, see if it's about right, then if I need an adjustment take the noodle out again and move it say 8mm or whatever then tighten it up and put the noodle back in. Also popping the noodle is a great way to give the brake blocks a good clean, they get that black film on them that affects braking.

Thank you very much, this is most comprehensive and well done. I just miss the part how to insert or remove the cables from the gear lever? Mine has kind of screws that wouldn't open the housing. P.S.: Well, another video suggests just to pull through the loose end. In my case the cable got stuck and the front gear shifter is in an ill position. Can't see the reason as the cable is entirely covered by its housing. I think I should undo the lower end and then try to get the upper part through, if you get me. Sorry for my English, by the way. Good luck!
