Wee job for the workshop this cold morning in ireland, my top bearing has gone, cheers for upload, awesome.

No problem David, welcome aboard. You might want to be a little kinder putting the bearings in than I was, though - I had to re-replace them about a month later, sounded like a bag of nails. I'm still cowering indoors in the warm here in sunny old England - which is to say 'researching' the next job of sorting out a clattering valve train on the old banger. Which is clearly why I'm faffing about here on KZbin of course!! All the best, Jim

@@myharris no problem Jim wee tip for you when putting bearing on shaft, wrap the bearing in a wet tea paper towel and put it in microwave for 30secs, make sure it's all covered, and put it on the shaft it'll expand the bearing a couple of thousands, to let it slip on, then once bearing on shaft stick the bearings and shaft in freezer for a couple of hrs, the bearings will contract a couple of thousands let it slip in better, oh and don't worry I had heavy hammer going as well, good news job done it's been sitting there for weeks now Ur vid sorted it, thanks David

Always press a bearing on to a shaft forcing the inner race. Use force on the outer race when pressing into a bore/housing. Note that one race should be a press fit and the other a slip fit. The press fit is always on the race that rotates when in operation. You'll encounter exceptions to this last comment in cheap tools where both will be a slip fit because it simplifies assembly but it's not best practice.

I use a Thor copper hammer, it does less damage, because it is softer than steel. I like your video, and all the advise you get from experts, which helps us all, I got one of these from a boot fair last week, and the bearing sound really good, just need to get a belt, there is a thing on it, that makes it easy to get the belt on.and off.

@myharris4 жыл бұрын
Hi Colin, welcome aboard. What I'd say is find a normal bolt that fits the thread, and then either cut it down to size and hacksaw a slot in one end or else measure the diameter and get one off fleabay. Let me know here how you get on with that, otherwise I'll take out the one on mine and measure it and tell you the dimensions. Hope this helps - cheers, Jim

Thank you for making the video. I didn't know where to start, so this will save a lot of effort.

No problem, happy to help. PS - if I was doing this again, I would've either used a soft-faced hammer to tap the bearings off the quill, or else made up some kind of press. Just be aware the quill end is not particularly strong steel and it will deform under repeated hammer blows. Don't make my mistake! Great to hear from you, all the best

good video thanks - Does anyone know any drill press models which use 12mm 6-splined drive on the spindle? ( draper , sealley, clarke, axminster, whoever )

I just got one of these 2nd hand, but the grub screw that locks the rotation of the head on the pillar has been stripped out by someone over the years. Any ideas for getting that out?
@myharris2 жыл бұрын
Hey Gavin, thanks for stopping by. My move on this would be to drill a 3/32" (3mm) hole in the grubscrew about 1/4" (6mm) deep and as close to centre as you can get. Find a junker 1/8" (4mm) Allen key (like the crappy ones they include in free toolkits - I must have about a zillion of them kicking around) and grind each face at one end so there's enough of a taper to jam in the hole you just drilled in the grub screw. Hammer the taper hard such that the Allen key faces get a good deep bite in the hole. Then gently ease the Allen key side to side til you feel the grub screw start to come free. Unscrew it carefully off, easing from side to side all the way round as if hand-tapping a thread. It may be Loctited in, so after you drill the hole maybe try heating it up with one of those little blowtorch lighters to unset any threadlocker, and then trying with the Allen key. Top tip about the Allen key - cut the angle off so you get a straighter hit with the hammer. Use a spanner/wrench (small adjustable works well) to turn the hex Allen key shaft. Sometimes tapping the end of the Allen key with a hammer while you're applying turning force can work well too. Hope this helps. Best of luck.

@@myharris I even hit with heat and nothing moving, so I drilled it out and the drilling head STILL won't move. It's always possible the PO never moved it and it's rusted in place. It's soaking in paraffin now, so I'll try again tomorrow.
@myharris2 жыл бұрын
@@gavinbroad1743 Decided to be a so-and-so has it? Sounds like you're making all the right moves. White vinegar makes a good soak if the paraffin doesn't work - actually dissolves the rust, where paraffin just lubricates it. Best of luck mate.

Hiya, I haven't been able to find one either, but read post #4 on this page: www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general/help-looking-drill-press-spindle-251428/ ...some advice on how to straighten a bent spindle. Hope this helps.

How can I just change the chuck on this pillar drill?
@myharris5 жыл бұрын
So far as I've been able to make out, the chuck is a press fit, not threaded or contrathreaded.. I wasn't able to free it, and stopped trying as I was wary of damaging it. Whether it would respond to some combination of heat/cold,or whether there's some way of pressing it out, I've been unable to find out. If you manage to figure it out, do please let me know how you did it, I'd be very grateful.
@AlanAnsell5 жыл бұрын
the chuck is just a push fit to just give it a tap on top of chuck it will pop off this is what i use to replace it www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Key-Type-1-5-13mm-Capacity-B16-Tapered-Bore-Drill-Chuck/113778354333?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

9:00 you ,re lucky if you didn't damage the bearings ,hammering the sleeve down. I made a drift for my meddings that supported both races of the bearings and I still flat spotted them - lasted about 12 months
@myharris5 жыл бұрын
Yup, you're right, they're already rumbling after just a few months (although they do get pretty constant daily use). I'm in the process of fabricating a custom arbor press for motorbike bearings which I'm still trying to figure out how to adapt for this. Thanks for the feedback, appreciated.

cool the bearing (~0 C)and heat the sleeve (~100 C) for shaft bearing install cool shaft and heat bearing. I use 0C and 100C because relatively easy to reach, work with, wont damage bearings and do not require special tools just a microwave (kzbin.info/www/bejne/goeydX2jZZqjotk )a freezer work gloves.
