I just use the readout from the VFD I use to power the motor and created a chart to indicate the true rpm of the spindle as opposed to the percentage of the wave form on the VFD........your setup with the sensor on the draw bar will make it difficult to fit a power draw bar later and if you haven't got to fitting one you will like it when you do.

Doesn't that motor mounting bracket have slotted holes to allow the motor to tension the belt.....it shows in the end of the video.

Hery, thanks for commenting. Yes, I did make slots there with tensioning in mind but they're very awkward to get at. The slider arrangement you see in this video is much easier to deal with. Appreciate your input, thanks for dropping by.

To cut a keyway in the bore of something just use a boring bar with a square ended tool bit on it's side and rack the saddle in and out......done that many times so it works.

I did some (slightly pessimistic) sums on the effect of the wear on the end plate of mine and this suggested it could reduce the pump output by as much as 30% which would be enough to affect the fueling. So I decided to stone the face flat again (heart in mouth time). It took quite a while but worked out fine. I did find a UK source for a genuine Delfi end plate with steel insert in the UK but decided to try to keep the thing as original as possible (the tractor is a bit tatty but has all those "Made in England" bits I like to keep if I can). In practice I didn't notice much difference having done the job. My only issue is a very occasional hesitation on pickup at around 800 rpm if she has been running at low rpm for ages. One rev up and it clears so not a big issue (possibly a slightly sticky control valve but I don't know.)

Great feedback Colin, really appreciate you taking the time. I was tempted to mill it flat myself but wasn't sure what else that might affect, so good to know it's a possibility for the future. Thanks again mate, really useful information and great to hear from you 👍

@@myharris Many thanks for the reply. Looking at my notes it's 7 years since I delved into the back end of the pump and mine, for some reason, has a slightly different arrangement for the regulator. It has an extra spring above the piston so there is a light, long spring down the middle of a shorter stiffer spring. It also has two bypass holes, the lower 1.25mm diameter and the upper of 2.5mm diameter. I had a bit of fun "walking in the footsteps" of the original designers by sticking the spring rates etc. onto a spreadsheet to work out how the pressure would vary with rpm and thought just how much hard work the original guys would have had with slide-rule and log tables to do what a click of a mouse allowed me to calculate. It set me wondering if they did this sort of thing by calculation or experimentation - I guess we will never know for sure.

Can the motor run in reverse? How?
@myharris
@myharris Ай бұрын
The motor came with instructions on how to reverse rotation. It's a series of keypresses on the keypad under the readout, I can't remember offhand the exact sequence but I'd assume it'll be specified in the paperwork that comes with the specific motor you get. Thanks for stopping by, appreciate you taking the time.

Lathe is in bits for the 3rd time as I'm currently adding Steve Jordan's centre saddle plate. Just one suggestion. I saw you using a Stanley knife for deburring on one of your videos. Cheap imitations of Noga deburring tools are reasonably accessible. 😉

I have one of these pumps on a JD engine in an air compressor. If it sits for a month or more, something inside sticks closed and it will not send fuel to the injectors. I've tried various things, including pressurizing the fuel to the inlet. I've had it off and all apart but didn't see any obvious problems. All clean inside. The simplest fix I've found is to take a small ball pein hammer and tap all 'round the pump, on the end, top cover, etc. That seems to loosen up and cure the problem, and it starts up right away after that. Annoying. Looking around the 'net and on youtube I see others have this problem as well.

@myharris 7 ай бұрын
Hi Richard, thanks for taking the time. It's a great question and one I should've addressed in the video. Space is really limited behind the lathe, and it's a proper pita to get to the 4 motor mounting bolts. Trying to get the belt tension right whilst keeping the motor in alignment under those conditions ends up being a multi-hour curse-fest! I wanted something that was easier to get to, and more capable of delivering consistent results. Appreciate your feedback, and great to see someone's giving my little videos such close attention! All the best. 👍

why not use a 4mm drill or 4mm broken endmill as a starting point for a 4mm slot cutter?
