I had a 2001 Z28 that I let sit due to needing a re-tune. The car hibernated for nearly 5 years. It had a Holley 255 fuel pump in it with maybe 2,500 miles on it. Sitting in varnish and water (10% ethanol blend) ruined the pump. It didn't want to rev, run well, or keep pressure (checked it with a gauge on the fuel rail) and finally crapped out prior to loading the car onto a trailer. I had to drain the tank, flush it (acetone works), replace the pump with a Walbro 255, and replace the fuel filter. My buddy bought the car and it runs very well and is lovingly stored in his garage. If you're going to keep the car you might as well drop the tank and replace the fuel pump before it dies on you when you're driving it. Just my .02 based on my experience. Check fuel pressure if you get a chance, your car probably has a valve somewhere on the fuel rail that you can tap into to.
@Jursaw
@Jursaw 7 жыл бұрын
MrAristes MrAristes The fuel tank was replaced but I think the fuel pump that was put into it was used so that wasn't a good idea to reuse fuel pump. I think I have to get a special fitting or something to check the pressure.
@MrAristes
@MrAristes 7 жыл бұрын
Keep up the good work on the car, I'm subscribing. My one friend had a gauge that screwed onto the schrader valve on the rail of my Z28. We saw PSI drop down to carb levels (12-16 PSI) as the pump was dying. I understand if your Mitsu is different. I just watched your video doing the compression test. Did you ever go back and squirt some engine oil into the spark plug hole and take a new reading? If #6 cylinder is low and you use a long, thin funnel to put a few ounces of oil in; the pressure reading will increase if the cylinder/rings are the culprit. The numbers won't change if the problem is above in the head/valve area. Just a thought since this trick is old and works pretty well.
@Jursaw
@Jursaw 7 жыл бұрын
MrAristes I was going to go back and put some oil in the cylinders to see if the pressure would go up to blame the rings but I didn't. I will do that soon though. Thanks for the sub!

@@JursawSorry was not slamming ;-) Its that I am working on a 92 Stealth tt that was sitting for 11 years, and am in process of having the tank redone. I already redid the fuel sending unit and replaced the fuel pump. The reason I was asking was wondering if I could get by by just blowing out the old fuel ? thru the lines like you did, then just using a gas additive in the gas when assembled, vs trying to blow chemicals though the line?
@ryandavis3091
@ryandavis3091 3 жыл бұрын
I'm curious too. I'm also wondering if i can use the fuel pump to pump the old fuel out. I saw you can add power to a black plug in the engine bay and the pump will run without the car being on.

Jason Nickel I went to vocational school for the 2 years they offer and graduated 2015. I never worked in a repair shop. I like watching videos and other mechanics on youtube to learn and get better! I work on my friend's and families cars but not often. I would like to get into the field as a technician but every place around here has cons I do not like.
@J5sense2
@J5sense2 7 жыл бұрын
Jursaw you seem to have the talent for it. As well as the tools. Lots of nice snap on stuff. You would do well. If you lived close to Columbia sc I would hire you we have plenty of work and a ac shop! But it is a hard field to get into. (Well the dealership side) As for your car... have you swapped a known good maf sensor? It seems to me that's what is acting up. Or you have a decent boost leak. 3sx sells a boost leak tester that bolts right up and you use compressed air to check for leaks. I would try that next.
@Jursaw
@Jursaw 7 жыл бұрын
Jason Nickel Thanks! I take that as a compliment. I love Snap-On tools but I don't buy too many because I like trying different brands that do the same thing if not better for a cheaper price. That sounds really great! There is so much competition around me it is crazy. Theres like 4 shops on one block. We have dealerships left and right. I would rather work in a private repair shop honestly. I have not swapped a known good MAF sensor because I have not been able to find one and I do not feel like shedding a few hundred bucks for a new one. Funny enough, saturday I started it up and it idled funny and the CEL came on. I checked the code and it was code 53. I was thinking about making a video on how to check the codes. Code 53 says, harness and connector, ignition coil, and power transistor unit. I believe it was dumping fuel down into the cylinders and not having enough spark to burn it. The coils are old and rusty looking. I have to do some more diagnosing.
@Jursaw

The hardline that comes out of the top of the fuel hat is very bent and could be restricted. This happens all of the time. It is better not to mess with the connection at the fuel hat and only remove the one under the car. You can replace the fuel hat with any 3000gt, but you have to replace the bracket at the bottom of the fuel pump on non v-r4 models.

Almost seems like the temp sensor. I had a vw vr6 and that sensor broke and I wasn't aware of it. When I tried to rev it up over 3K it would just stop and die back to idle. Also not sure if the other KZbinr ever got to check the fuses. At this point. Check fuses and Check sensors. Can read the codes with an OBDII reader I bet you have one. Its a Japan motor so its nothing like a german motor but I'm sure the temp sensor is pretty much the same thing. That would make sense for the rev part but the smoking is probably major motor issues. Have a special camera can pull the plugs 1 by 1 and see if the piston is cracked or has a hole in it. 1 had water in it towards the back. Running OK now but I bet it will need a rebuild.
@Jursaw
@Jursaw 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip, I will have to look further into it, this car like bogs when you try to rev it with the pedal depressed all the way but when you ease into it, it revs up high. I don't think this car has a OBDll port because it is an older car. (pre 1996)
@barrysauce
@barrysauce 7 жыл бұрын
My vr6 was a 1996 and it had OBDII I did a search and your car has OBDI but right after that it was OBDII I'm sure. It makes sense it is a sensor since when you rev up the car the sensor adjusts for more gas or air. I might be completely wrong but the problem sure sounds like it. Check all sensors and make sure they are not broken. The rat could of broke some of the wires and that would totally make sense. Get the manual and read the codes. When you reset the battery the ecu has to re-learn everything again on the adjustments to air fuel. Altitude all that crap. Good luck and keep us posted.
