I finally get around to cleaning and doing a minor tune-up on my piece of crap 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4. The results aren't bad at all.

I died a little every time you dragged that poor intakes mounting surface against the driveway :( Did you do a compression test while you had the rear plugs accessible? Did you take a peek at the timing belt?

I did, compression is fine across the board, and timing belt looks good, although I'd probably change it out in the near future.

For those who care. When buying a turbo car, follow the normal steps (like, spark plugs, oil, filters, fluids etc) but also check/replace vacuum lines. This is at a minimum. As a whole, I would clean the intake lines (in most cars). In this video, I would have taken a brush to the manifold insides to remove soot and give more available air. For the spark plugs, just get a spark plug ratchet. Much easier. Also realize what gap is required for your car. Even going with a pre-gapped plug from NGK has been VERY different gaps. Gasket maker should only be to fill gaps of installed gaskets. The best option is to add on to your gasket in the high stress areas. Gaskets are the best choice, but better would be to make stronger areas. Gasket maker is pretty poor compared to an actual gasket.

I bought my black 92 vr4 brand new back in 1992 I was in 11th grade 18 years old and I still love it to this day it was my first car and I went through a lot with it but it’s part of my family. I was a junior at Automotive HS in Brooklyn ny. Now it sits in my garage in Florida. Still under 100k miles and the value of these cars skyrocketed over the past 2 years. Bro hang onto that vr4. People in Florida are paying 10k for a non running vr4 project and even base 3000gts are climbing in value. Anyone with a 3000gt hang onto it because the value is going up every year.

Dear God, it's called an upper and lower plenum and why would you just drag it around on the concrete like that? That light is for your coolant, add some to the reservoir.. Why wouldn't you use those long ass needle nose pliers to take the spark plug out, and why would you leave those old ass wires in there after going through all that trouble? That part you don't know the name of is the EGR valve btw.. The car has over 200k miles, the first thing you should do is change the timing belt, idler pulleys and hydraulic tensioner, unless it's been recently changed, which I doubt... I feel for the guy or girl that buys this car thinking all maintenance is done... I could go on and on, but there's only so many hours in a day... Good luck with it regardless....

That's better than the one that I've found sitting for about 5-6 years. In Poland :-) Would have bought it as it had nice wheels and tyres, the paint was ok, no rust, but... the interior has been literally eaten by mold. Didn't even have the courage to sit in the driver's seat, and believe me - I had some crusty cars before. Didn't buy it. It was at a auction, starting price about 1500 PLN which is about 200$.

I had the same issue with the black oily spark plug in the rear bank. Mine's burning oil from bad valve seals... hopefully all goes well when I change them out this weekend. Anyways, idle the car for a few minutes after a good 15-20 minute drive and then give it some gas, hopefully you don't see that dreadful blue smoke.

Bad valve stem guide seals won't cause build up in the intake runners. It causes smoke at start up, smoke while accelerating after stopping, fouled plugs, and/or oil consumption.

Was it just me....or did anyone else CRINGE when he dragged that manifold across the ground? All I could think was either you messed up that mating surface or you chipped/ cracked that casting. If you're gonna rough house that aluminum, place it on an old blanket or something. I like the polished look, though. I just hope it wasn't damaged.

The valve on the back of the plenum is for the egr opens up during warm up to let the gasses through. Although the cars an obd1 so you might as well delete it not like it will throw a code. Deleted it on my 97 VR4 the intake and runners stay extremely clean

1. Please change the oil and filter 2. Please test & clean the injectors - there is a video on youtube using a can of carb and intake cleaner. 3. Why not clean and spray the turbo heat shield cover in silver since you have the paint 4. Please power flush the radiator/remove the old coolant by disconnecting the top hose, remove rad cap, funnel the top hose into a bucket (I used a PVC pipe), once its warm the old coolant will flow into a bucket and you'll need to continuously top up the radiator with tap water, until the water coming out of the top hose is clear. Shut off car, empty radiator of water, then insert fresh coolant with distilled water :) 5. Please take out all the interior, dash, clean out all the mouse gunk, repair or replace the seats, replace carpet?, tidy it up, shine that dash up with Aerospace 303. Might need two ppl though to remove the dash. 6. Why is so many things rusted? Car go swimming? Those rusty screws are annoying me, lol. Can we wire brush them and spray with some black paint along with radiator top brackets? 7. Hows the brake fluid? I assume you would want to bleed/replace it. 8. Keep up the good work, prob my first video on youtube in super keen to watch / see progress on.

Nice job! the engine appears to be healthy. Amazing since it sat for so long and has 225K on it. Get that coolant and oil changed asap, its gotta be pretty bad! Just a tip since I owned a 3KGT, clean all the connectors in the engine compt with electronics contact cleaner. (spray can .. cover painted surfaces) If any connectors are greased from the factory, clean and regrease with white grease. If any connectors appear corroded, try mechanically scraping them with a razor blade, but never sand an electrical contact. Sanding increases surface area, lessens the electrical connection, will cause it to fail very soon, and will corrode again in no time... so dress with a new razor blade. There is also the option of deoxit as a last resort, but only if you have to. (don't use deoxit on non-oxidized connectors as it will shorten their life) The engine will respond to the electrical cleaning, the CPU receives the correct sensor resistances, so the engine will run smoother without hesitation nor breakup at any temperature. If the engine takes a long time to warm up, replace the thermostat, very important. It should take about 5 minutes to reach operating temp. Keep up the great work!

in a previous episode you powerwashed the engine bay - i'm betting that's where the water on top of the plug came from. I used just a low pressure garden hose to clean my engine bay and had a nasty misfire - changed the plugs and noticed water sitting on top of the plugs. even though the plugs were shielded with a top mount intercooler, water got down in there and seeped past the top of the coil pack. You may want to check the condition of your coil packs and see if the rubber grommets at the top have dry rotted.
