The zip ties are a good idea. I've never thought to try that. Thank you for taking the time to make and post the video.

Thanks for doing this. I'm newer to marine diesel engines, and this helps me a lot in seeing how it all works.

Thanks for the video. Looks like a very straight forward job. Now, if I can just figure out a way to get to the pump. Dang its tight in there.
@TheShipsLogg2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I can be tight. Now way to get around that. Good luck! 👍🏾

Two tips.....bend the vanes the right way and use "flat" DENTAL FLOSS to keep them pointing in the right direction. One the the impeller is in, snip the dental floss and pull out. Don't forget there is a "O" ring on the pulley side that should be replaced at the same time..Replaced my impeller but after putting it together, the pulley shaft had a small leak. Replaced the "O"Ring"...no leak

@@kayndee2011 I do the same thing except I use a small zip tie instead of dental floss. Works well.

Hi Frank, great video, very helpful and well explained. Clever idea with the zip ties! I have a Westerbeke 4.4 and need to replace the impeller. The service manual was not very helpful identifying where the raw water pump is located. Your video will certainly help with that. Thanks - Steve

Glad you found it helpful. Sometimes you just have to try something a little different.

Thanks, man, great video! I wished you had shown us the broken-off impeller parts you got out of the elbow & hoses... How far down the chain did you have to go to extract them all? Keep it up!
@TheShipsLogg Жыл бұрын
Fortunately, I only had to go to the end of the outbound hose. I have heard of people having to go into the heat exchanger though. Thanks for watching!

Lining your keyhole up with one of the bolt holes gives a descent visual when aligning impeller back on shaft. I cant count how many times ive pushed that key out of the slot.
@TheShipsLogg2 жыл бұрын
Great idea! Usually I push the key out of the slot about 5 times before finally getting it lined up. I'll try that next time.

Nice video...I have the same generator and I need to the do the same thing. BTW, looks like you have a lot of extra room over there now that ZJ has been moved.

Thanks! I am actually on M dock. They just replaced N dock a couple of weeks ago. I think that they moved ZJ over next to us.

Hi Frank! Another great video. I have a Kohler generator on my boat and had it completed overhauled this past spring. Simple routine maintenance would sure save boaters a lot of money. Do you use your generator a lot? I put about 10-12 hours on mine each season.
@TheShipsLogg2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I am a lot like you in that I do not use my generator a lot. I think this past year, I may have put 15 hours on it. Most of the time I find myself running it just to exercise it because I have not used it.

What hoses did you take off Frank if you can’t find a missing rubber flap piece
@TheShipsLogg2 жыл бұрын
You should definitely take off the hose between the impeller housing and the heat exchanger. A lot of pieces get stuck in there. Sometimes pieces also get stuck in the heat exchanger itself so you may have to take that apart as well.

I see you have a plastic or composite sea strainer on your generater. Are you happy with it as it is plastic not brass ? thanks for any reply
@TheShipsLogg2 жыл бұрын
It's not been a problem at all. I like it because it's easy to see whether there is a bunch of gunk in the filter or not.
