I had to replace the lash adjusters on my 1993 Fairlane as I had the typical (lazy lifter) tapping noise from the older overhead cam 6 cylinder 4.0lt Ford engine. It has done around 240,000ks and I thought I should do this before any major damage was done internally. I ran into a few issues but that was mainly to me not cleaning the whole rocker assembly first time around on removal, but it's all back together now and sounding better than ever.

My 2000 model AU Falcon lpg engine at 323000kms also developed an intermittent lifter tick,so i did this exact same job,but i also pulled apart every single lifter for closer inspection...and compared them to a disassembled NEW lifter that i had on hand..what i noticed on the old lifters is some of their internal single springs were ALOT softer than the new lifters spring which would be putting less tension on the old lifters internal piston..with repeated heating and cooling of the engine after 20 years of service these springs would anneal and become softer like this..resulting in reduced lifter efficiency and the noticeable tick..All my lifters were then replaced with a new set and the engine is now just as quiet as a new one..with no lifter tick after 4000kms so far since the job was done.

Great video. Very practical. I have the identical problem with my EF 2 Falcon which I have owned from new; done 289,000 K. I had thought I might need to drop the sump and replace the lifter but finding out the problem may just be the lash adjuster was welcome news. I'll be on to it later this week.

Thanks for the feedback. The Fairlane is still running strong and about 18 months ago it did a trip down to Victoria and still has no issues with the lash adjusters.

Hey mate just looking at T.I performance website and don’t know if I need to buy lifter seals as well as the lifters. Do I need to replace the seals?

I have to replace one lifter, do I have to loosen the timing to take the rocker assembly off a bit to lift the one rocker to access the lifter?

I hope you got this sorted. I would do all of them.

The lifter has a plastic o ring that helps bed it in to the rocker arm sometimes they fall apart and block the hole that feeds the lifter causing the noise you may just have to give it a clean and it'll be fine

I need to do this to my ef. I thought the lifters we're down in the motor and the head had to come off ?

No this is not the case. You do not need to take the head of an EF,EL,AU and previous models with overhead camshaft.

Which way do the lifters go in? Took mine out awhile ago and forgot Which way they go

From memory the flat end goes into the rocker arm... But make sure you prime them other wise the oil pressure will not build up...

They basically fall out some of the lash adjusters and others needed to be tapped out with a small drill bit. There is a hole on the rocker arm on the top side.
