Hi everyone, welcome back to the channel!
In this video I am going to continue with the replacement of the old and tired regulator/rectifier on my 2003 Honda VFR800 VTEC.
The replacement Reg/Rec is a Shindengen unit from a 2009 Yamaha MT09 and uses the more modern MosFet technology instead of the old fashioned shunt diodes.
This replacement is split across 3 separate videos.
This is the second of the 3 and in this episode I am going to be making a mounting plate to adapt the Shindengen Reg/Rec to my VFR.
Links for the parts required to make the plate (This is where I purchased them from, be advised that I have no affiliation to the companies in the links whatsoever).

I really like this series of videos, educational and useful. I recently bought a 1999 vfr 800 fi (5th gen), and it has a dodgy rectifier hack on it...or so it seems, the rectifier is bolted to the left of the bike behind the fairing, and has a positive wire bolted from the external hole on the rectifier, nearest the handlebars to the positive terminal on the battery, no negative wire, but the poles of the battery joined by what looks like a battery tender connecter. The bike was running fine, but must not have been charging, because she went flat while I was walking around town, and would not start... Got her home, took out the battery, put it on smart charge, but stupidly connected the negative first.. The wire connecting the rectifier to the battery caught fire and severed in seconds. The shame. I disconnected it, doused the fire on the wire, did a quick dirty repair on the rectifier positive wire, and connected it up , this time negative last on the battery. The bike was still not starting, but it does not seem to have damaged anything beyond the wire from the exterior of the rectifier.. I need to know if the default position of the 1999 vfr 800 rectifier is on the left side, bolted to the frame just rear of the rider position I'm guessing it isn't. Will do this install anyway, just going to re watch all videos to get it straight in my mind on how to do it properly. Have you any tips.. and is the shindengen rr unit compatible with Lithium batteries? Thanks.

Hey bud, yeah on the Gen 5 models the R/R is bolted to the subframe on the left hand side, kinda adjacent to where a pillion would sit. Sounds like it’s been messed about with though by the description of the wiring! The Shindengen R/R 100% work with lithium batteries too! 👍🏻

@@KevsShed Thanks.. Just ordered the Shindengen yesterday...will collect the various materials and tools for the job while I wait for it to be delivered. If the stator is nearer to the default mounting, it will require less 12 agw So that's something.

My regulator is being done at the garage tomorrow. But I will get a kit off you next spring. Headers are not the best either so I will change them as well. Don't want to de cat it though or fit aftermarket cans, I leave for work at 5am.

Hi kev done same with both of my vfr 750 models wired rectifier direct to battery the early one which is a 88 model melted the the plug from the stator made loom up my self fitted a fuse link to live side of battery did the other 750 as a pre caution which is a 94 fr model also have 2015 model vfr 800 had no problems with that wiring is a lot thicker on 2015 model.

Really you could mount the rectifier regulator somewhere else as where Honda have placed it, it is adjacent to the radiator and coolant pipes which can get pretty hot meaning the reg/rec will always be hot. As you have made a new loom you can choose your new position really. Just make up a new mounting bracket. I would be inclined to put it somewhere away from heat and where there is air flow to help keep it cool. Am about to do mine. Nevertheless Kevin excellent thorough work.

Hi Kev, Why do Honda fit the reg/rec in such poor positions? On my 750 it's tucked up above the ex pipe in an almost dead air space! On youre 800 it's above a rad with the engine hating the frame that it's bolted to! My sons TL 1000's reg is on the rear frame in fresh air. Now that seems far more sensible.
@KevsShed
@KevsShed 4 жыл бұрын
It's a very valid point, I can only assume that it is space thing. I agree that the TL1000S has it in a seemingly better location. That said, I am pretty sure that the R/R on the TL1000S is the same as the one on my GSXR SRAD and my SV1000S which aren't considered to be overly reliable either! Only time will tell!

Cheers mate, I guess it will to a certain degree, although I don't have any data to verify that as fact! I do know however that the Shindengen Reg/Recs run cooler due to the technology employed within so that will be a big plus!

have you had any other issues with the r/r or the stator since changing? i put an update mosfet r/r and it only lasted 5 months. it shorted out because of heat. i may be relocating the new r/r in a new place to get more air but, not sure where yet. thanks

Great video. As a potential 5th gen vfr owner, i'm doing my reasearch so all this is extremely helpful! One small observation though, shouldn't the cooling "things" on the r/r (i don't know how they are called haha) be at the same angle as the OEM set-up? So the air can flow through them from the front of the bike?
@KevsShed
@KevsShed 3 жыл бұрын
It'll make no difference to the cooling ability at all, the Shindengen R/Rs run far cooler anyway! I have made and sold over 150 of these kits now and have not had a single failure. You could argue the same about the radiators on the bike too I suppose! They aren't best positioned for airflow either!

Question, I'm rocking a 07 and when I bought it it already had HID's installed with standard bulbs for the high beams. The reg/rec is still stock. I have switched out my stock high beams with Cougar Motor H7 LED'S. So because LED's and HID's have different power requirements do you think the extra unused power/ heat to the Reg/rec will burn it up? Or do you think the stock reg has enough thermal dissipation to mitigate the excess? Same question for the upgraded reg/rec?
@KevsShed
@KevsShed 3 жыл бұрын
The best answer that I can give is that the energy created by the Stator that is unused by the electrical system has to be dissipated somewhere and a by product of this loss is heat when the standard shunt R/R sends it to ground. The Stock R/R isn't particularly great at this and it won't be any better now that it is 14 years old! Corrosion in the connectors of the bikes loom will certainly exacerbate the issue greatly! The Shindengen R/R is far better at handling excess heat and it actually uses Mosfet technology and therefore actually is a fair bit cooler in operation. Hope this answers your question.

my 2bob these things need to be in air flow area of bike not hidden behind plastic body work they fail because they over heat
@KevsShed
@KevsShed 3 жыл бұрын
Generally they fail due to corrosion at the connectors caused by water ingress. This raises the resistance which in turn raises the temperature. The stock locations are fine for the usual heat levels, not so in the case of an overheating one though!
