It seems like some youtube algorithim reads my mind. Just two days ago I noticed some steering issues with my 1993 boat. Wifey was driving and couldn't get the outboard to turn tbe other way and I had to push it to get it moving back. Then this video and the other two on steering mechaisms show up. These really help understand what problems could exist and how I can fix them with tools I have. Great comments on tools. Hammering on a screw driver etc. Not every one has a shop full of the proper tools. A run to the tool store to get proper tools takes time and it seems that I always end up buying a few other tools I might need some day. I end up spending $65 and half a day to get a perfect tool for the job when I could have used an imperfect tool that I already had but had to adapt a bit that took a bit longer... Thanks for acknowledging.

@@DangarMarine many thanks again. I’ve taken it apart with your help. My boat is a centre-console rib and I can’t get at the back of the dashboard, so it was more of a struggle than you had. I had to behead a few rusted bolts with an end-mill in a Dremel to get the helm out. It looks like my cable is seized up, the helm is ok inside.

Just came across your vids the last month or so, but really enjoying them. I've only done one project of my own on my Carolina Skiff 238DLV, and that was a bilge pump and float switch change out. I did notice and exceptionally lengthy steering cable cooked up in the bilge and became curious as to what a replacement might entail if it ever became necessary to do so. This video gave some great instruction along with the comfort that I might tackle it myself. Hopefully, that's a way into the future. Thanks for all the good info, even on boats and motors not similar to my own. Blessings from Alabama!

+Dangar Marine It is a big job but doable as long as you have done a fair amount of woodworking and are willing to learn about fiberglass and epoxy, I started late June last year and I was about 80 % complete by late October ( I am 70 and retired) when I had to stop because of our 'wonderful' winters :). Started again last week and now doing the engine installation, steering, electrical etc.... and countless hours of sanding and painting once it gets warmer. Hope to launch this coming July if all goes well. Anyway, I enjoy your videos, even the ones not applicable to me since I am totally new to boating.

Hi Stu Just a few observations after NOT making such an easy job of things as I should. In my case, apart from natural cackhandedness, I had problems having to feed the cable through a tight lining along the side of the boat and then having to feed the cable into a confined area under the steering console. So, some thoughts: 1. Find a friend to help with things like feeding the cable 2. Before drawing out the damaged cable attach a line to it with duct tape so as to act as a draw and guide string later 3. The area where the worm threaded cable passes into the cable housing is very delicate. Tape the plastic tube supplied that covers the exposed wormed cable firmly to the metal end of the cable housing and even better splint this junction area with 6 inches or so of split tubing, then tape over. I wrecked my first new cable because it kinked badly when feeding it in towards the console as it caught in an unseen obstruction. Succeeded in the end! John
@DangarMarine8 жыл бұрын
Hey John, glad you got there in the end! Some hulls can make this job very tricky. These steering cables are combination of very stiff and hard to bend, yet with that delicate spiral end you mentioned. Often once you tuck it down the side it can be quite a tight turn to get it into the outboard tilt tube. A second set of hands can really help.
