Worked perfectly!! Needed to replace one for a customer because of the serious oil leak coming from the tensioner, behind the alternator. I knew there was a procedure to unlock the tensioner after installation, and I am grateful that you covered that. Thank you. Side note: yes the rear cam is held by a T-55, and when you rotate the engine the 90 degrees clockwise to set the chain, you should hear the tensioner ratcheting out (click click click). So you know it unlocked.

@@jrgsxr33 yes, to unlock the chain tensioner.
@glasser2819 Жыл бұрын
unfortunately these basic tensioners are non ratcheting, just a spring.
@MechanicalTriage Жыл бұрын
@@glasser2819 no, the one I had, needed to be pushed all the way to zero to unlock it. It has teeth on the rod. So, not just a spring.

Since I bought my car in 2019 it always rattles on cold starts for 2-3 seconds. Haven’t bothered it as I’ve researched this and it’s considered normal. Car runs great at 114k miles, just did the oil filter housing gaskets and oil cooler gasket. Will need to do motor mounts next.

There is now a tech bulletin calling to replace upper chain tensioners and installing check valves to keep the oil from draining back
@tyalbert50632 жыл бұрын
That is for the 3.5l m276 engine. This 3.0l m272 engine has one chain tensioner on the side of the block while the m276 has multiple under the cam caps.

Hi, I have the same rattling sound on my E350 (2010). But I hear it only when the car is driven and then parked for 1 to 3 hours and then start the engine. Do you think that is the chain tensioner problem?

it sounds like some friction maybe lubrication might be missing on some of the bolts or pulley.. Maybe the serpentine belt is flaw, I wonder if you ever found the problem in 2019... How many miles did it have, when he notice the grinding sound? Also question, Did you also have to fix his ESL/EIS on the ignition?
@NK17945 жыл бұрын
Jason Lewis I think the problem is only with this particular engine. I believe it had to do with lack of oil during start up. The engine is really smooth after it starts up, no rattling noise whatsoever. All the belts and pulleys are in excellent shape.

The sound goes away for a little bit after swapping out with a new tensioner. And then returns again after a short time.
@billsbenz0074 жыл бұрын
its your camshaft adjuster most likely
@beechcoma4 жыл бұрын
Only the first five seconds after the engine is started from cold is the noise heard until oil pressure reaches the tensioner. Especially near freezing temps. Come to find out Its considered normal in m272 engines. The chain was replaced and the cam Adjuster"s" had pretension. The check engine light will come on if the Cam Adjusters aren't setting the valve timing correctly.

@@NK1794 , I have exact same car though not same problem. My problem is DTC 1208 though not necessarily the balance shaft. By monitoring live data, I know that the right intake cam adjuster would stuck open at 36.2 degree advanced after cruising at high speed. It won't return back to normal until car stopped and restarted. This is due to the area around the dowel pin where it meets the front plate was worn off. Have you seen and/or replace right intake cam adjuster due to that condition? And if I do, do I have to replace the timing tensioner as well? Thank you.

I have the exact same sound , my mechanic is telling me its a crankshaft !!! which Im really not convinced about . The sound started 2 years ago and it started to become more frequent (around two hours of cooling ) , could it be a timing chain ? What should i do !
@NK17944 жыл бұрын
Ghaben Mustafa If it’s been 2 years and it’s not getting any worse and if I were you I would leave it alone. If your car has a lot of miles and IF you plan to keep it for a long time I would go ahead and change the chain and the tensioner for a peace of mind but I would not expect the sound to go away though. I think that’s just the way the engine is.
@ghabenmustafa59354 жыл бұрын
NK1794 at the beginning the sound was heard only after a night but now the sound comes after two hours otherwise the engine sound pretty good after a few seconds, the car has 110k miles

@NK17945 жыл бұрын
The noise doesnt go away completely but if your car has a lot of miles you should change it anyway. If the tensioner goes bad the chain could skip and that would be bad for the engine. If you plan to keep your car for a long time would be another good reason to do it.
@danielfernandez94694 жыл бұрын

Do you know how much Mercedes would charge roughly and how but did this cost you? Mine has like a knocking sound and I’ve been told it’s lifters, left camshaft, timing I don’t which one tho and I know forsure it’s not rodknock so yea...
@NK17945 жыл бұрын
I have no clue how much the dealership would charge. I have all the tools so the cost was for the tensioner, $122.00 from Pelican Parts. By the way, the sound is still there even with the new tensioner but it's no as loud. I'm begin to think it's a design flaw. It's not getting enough lubrication when it sits for awhile.
