Thank you for the video. I need to replace the carrier bearing on my 2003 Tundra. I purchased a bearing from RockAuto for $8.00. It was in the clearance closet out list. The new bearing looks good. I hope that fixes my vibration problem. I only put 3000 to 4000 miles a year on my truck, so hopefully the cheap bearing will last five years.

Thank you for the comment! I have heard a lot of folks have bad luck with off brand carrier bearings, and them failing within a few months. So I always encourage spicer or Toyota genuine. Hopefully you have good luck with yours!

@@JHBtheIV , thank you for the advice. Maybe that is the reason the close out bearing was so cheap. I’ll order a better quality bearing.

@@JHBtheIV , I did a little research and the SKFHB2380-40 bearing I purchased for $8.00 from RockAuto is apparently a pretty good bearing. Probably not nearly as good as a Spicer bearing. It appears most people do recommend the Spicer bearing, which cost $78 on RockAuto.

My 2006 Tacoma has a slight vibration at 45mph but any slower or faster none. In your opinion is this part the culprit?

Vibration could be a number of things, so I am purely guessing. But if it's only happening at a certain speed, I would lean toward an imbalanced wheel over the carrier bearing.

The measuring you did is not necessary. When you re-assemble the drive shaft it will center itself. Then tighten the two bolts that hold the shaft to the truck. Kudos for finding the two-step torque process for the flange! Most vids I've watched just slam it on with an impact and leave it.

Appreciate the tip on the driveshaft centering. I wasn’t sure on that, and just wanted to be safe.

This entirely depends on how easy you can get the bearing off. I had to use a hammer and punch seems like it took hours. If you're going to start this... make sure you have the entire day to get it done correctly. Props to what i just witnessed.

Absolutely. I stay ahead of maintainance and corrosion, so generally things don’t give me too much issue. If corrosion and rust has been allowed to run rampant, then id expect nothing to go smoothly. 😩

Where did you put the thin spacer??And is the just 1 or 2, with one on each side?

Just one. 5:25

Is this for a Tundra or Tacoma? 2wd or 4wd?

This is on my 03 Tundra, but the procedure is similar for Taco.

I had a mechanic replace my carrier bearing a year ago, Last Sunday I replaced my u-joints myself 8/18/2024 at the age of 71. My mechanic installed the carrier bearing upside down, instead of the single hole facing the ground, he had the two holes facing the ground. It destroyed the two u-joints between the carrier bearing and rear end, also destroyed the carrier bearing. You trust a licensed mechanic in business with his own shop, disappointing, I watched youtube videos and did it right.

Well, I hope he was just having on off day. Very cool though, that you were able to get it done yourself. Im a bit younger than you, but crawling around under these trucks is a task!
