Love it. Another trick: code something for your favourite game. A helper, utility, a web site, a cool screenshot or video snippet maker. Or a game analyzer, that's what I did 20+ years ago. It parsed all the chat logs from an MMORPG, and presented all the battles, statistics etc.

Any recommendations to start making games or game-related concepts for a C++ student?
@hommhommhomm
@hommhommhomm Жыл бұрын
@@heavymetalmixer91figure out really clearly want your role to be in the making of the game. Do you want to be the head designer of all gameplay, more like a team leader. Or do you want to make the graphics or balancing or what other roles are there. Then spend huge amounts of time doing different small projects in that field. Start making bigger and bigger projects, always checking in with a bunch of people if they like it or not. Assuming you want to eventually make money from it, you need become intimately knowledgeable with what other people like. This will determine the final financial gain or loss of this adventure. Think of the intersection between what you like and what lot of other people like, and make something there. You don't want to work on a thing you hate either, unless you're really in need of money, in which case there are probably higher paying c++ jobs out there I would guess. Definitely pay attention to what a lot of people like that already exists. Huge amount of research into what people like has been done through games which either succeeded or not. If it worked, there are a lot of people who want this type of stuff. Sometimes this sounds more like cooking and less like painting.

Can tell you're a junior programmer Because I will tell you this much. Yes programming can be fun like any game, and yes it is rewarding BUT unlike with video games, it's exhausting as all hell. You will get tired from a day's programming, and even more so than just mentally tired, you will get physically tired as well. It literally saps your energy. And this is why at the end of a programming work-day, or an agile sprint, or a marathon of work to get something launched in time - you need a break, and potentially a long one. And this break will always focus on getting you exactly the things that you didn't get while programming. Exactly instant gratification, or physical activity, or doing something productive with your hands as opposed to with your brain. This is why I as a programmer prefer in the after-hours, or between-hours - video games (and dumb ones if I'm exhausted), skateboarding, and wood-working. On my vacations I prefer sunny beaches and swimming and partying. And you will see a lot of developers with exactly those patterns and those sorts of activities. Now as to why you currently think the way you do is exactly as I mentioned, because you're still an inexperienced developer. Inexperienced developers have the enviable ability to chill while coding, and just do it like any other activity, and not break much of a sweat. It's a state that people who've been programming for many years cannot ever return to unless they just lighten their workload, but even then that will just decrease the duration of work, and not the intensity. The intensity and load on your brain increases with experience and this is just inevitable. The reason is that when you're just starting out, you don't consider all these other factors at the same time as you are coding. You don't necessarily give much thought to the modularity of your code, where and when it can be reused, the algorithmic and spatial complexity of it, the readability of your code and whether it's self-documenting, whether if it's part of a public API - the sort of use-cases and data it will be used with or what kinds of use-cases there are anyway, security considerations when it comes to outside calls to your API, to what extent the code is cross-platform, to what extent it's thread-safe if used on a multi-threaded environment in the future, or can be used in multiple instances across many virtual machines, you don't think about which dependencies may become out of date sooner rather than later, you don't give much consideration to the build system used, you don't give a thought about how easy it will be to debug and troubleshoot, or how to design the system to be simpler rather than more complicated (and this is actually harder to do). And 100 other things. You don't have the scope of knowledge or the experience to know what to give consideration to or why. But as you level up as a programmer, you inevitably have to think about more and more things even when writing seemingly simple code. Now it's also true, that with experience comes the ability to gauge what is important to consider and what isn't for any given code that you write. And to gradually become faster at doing it. So you know that for instance, if your code is private and internal, you control its use yourself and so don't have to worry about outside use-cases and security considerations (mostly), or if you have a guarantee that your code will be run at times of lighter load, then you don't have to think too hard about issues of optimization, just do what sounds sensible on the surface. But nevertheless, on balance you will still be left with a lot more thinking per minute than when you were just a beginner. And because of that, you can no longer treat programming as a form of recreation, not if you're doing it professionally. It's simply not. It's hard work, and you need your after-hours and video games with that.

I love gaming, but I found that I love gaming because I love solving puzzles. I do coding for a living now, but I found that I enjoy architecting solutions more than implementing them. The thing is that the thing you love about gaming (or any other activity for that matter) can exhibit parallels in other activities, making those activities enjoyable too. The trick is to figure out why you love gaming and see if parts of it can be transferred to a more general life recipe.

I drew this parallel when I realised by loving LoL, I probably love team vs team sports i.e. soccer, rugby. Both are competitive and cooperative. Perhaps the parallel to be drawn from loving games like Skyrim is travelling. If you travel to a new city, you can redefine yourself, much like creating a new character. What are some or another parallel/s you've drawn?

I spent a lot of time learning tons of programming domains and had tons of fun. After a decade, by the time I started searching a PhD, I had become really good. Once I approached the need to get a job and had the ambition to become a world class ML researcher, I started feeling fear of failure and started to practice much less. That fear of failure is awful. The idea of "If I do nothing, I can't fail". Today, I learn the piano because I know I won't ever try to monetise it. Failing to find customers on a project I invested a lot in is a GIANT negative reward for my brain. Meanwhile, doing crazy impressive projects for fun is just positive rewards as I break through fancy technical problems. Making a business is a whole different mindset. The mindset of bullshitting your way in, telling people what they want to hear.

One of the trick i use to learn and gamify the experience both at the same time is to create something that i will actually use, the product itself will become the reward and you can build a whole customized tool chain with tools depend on other tools of your own which will give a sense of progression. It can also be a motivation cheat code because when you start to imagine a tool and some way you might approach building it, living without the tool you just thought of suddenly become a lot less comfortable

If I'd been doing productive stuff on the PC the same amount of time I've been playing video games, I'd be an ultra senior programmer, data scientist, engineer and who knows what -_- I REALLY feel empty and miserable playing like 8 hours a day, sometimes even my hands hurt and rarely I feel something positive, just braindead playing over and over again. I'm starting to take online certification courses on Coursera and Udemy, but I still don't feel very motivated. This video helped me see that if I keep playing video games so much I'll never be able to take my life back. Thank you! I don't know if I'll be able to change too soon, it's like a drug addiction, but I really want to build a better future with a nice job. I really enjoy being in front of the screen all day, just as you said. I'd be AMAZING to turn that capability into profit. I've learnt to build PC's, install different operating systems and all that stuff, I've also learnt video and photo editing and I've been working recently a lot with AI stuff like stable diffusion and I can comfortably say that I love working on PC so I can see a future where I could had a well paid job if I work hard enough... I want to believe that I can do more with my life and stop sucking... I really want to change. I'm pretty interested in data analytics and data science, but since I'll need to learn python and R at least, this video was perfect for me. Thank you again... and wish me luck (and sorry for my English)

On the other hand I love both gaming and programming. The reason I even started to be intrigued into programming was because of gaming, so gaming will always be important and special to me. Problems with video: * meeting others in public: OLD advice, and no longer really applicable. Most people would prefer to meet virtually, but there's no accountability that way. * Python: great and fun language to play around with, but you're not going to be making any serious games or applications with it. The documentation for GUI libraries you could use with Python is not well maintained, or deep for that matter. And if you ever see or hear someone saying that you can make serious applications with it, RUN! A popup modal will never be anything serious. Python is best-suited for data-heavy applications. C++ or something similar to that would be the better approach. * gamifying doesn't really accomplish anything. It only serves to keep in existence the very thing you're arguing against. Now, if we made progress a game by doing something like "buy a programming tee shirt if I can publish this game", then you're providing a tangible reward.

I spent years doing almost nothing else but playing games. In my thirties I am so bored of games that I actually enjoy just messing around with Python.

Python is so much fun, I agree. It's like pseudocode, instant-compilation, and simple output all in one.

Try looking up Mario/Nintendo level design, or Spelunky's procedural level generation. You'll also want player movement mechanics that complement the levels you make.

how to replace your gaming addiction with coding: - don't overthink language/syntax just build something, no need to think about safe or unsafe. - set short term goal every time you code, not long term one. - don't try hard.

coding and video games have more in common than you think... for instance, both coding and games heavily feature what the brass at EA likes to call "surprise mechanics"

Much as that I want to learn how to do that. I don't likethink my mind will understand it. I tried it in the past. I still can not comprehend the understanding of video game coding.

I think the assumption everything we do needs to be "productive" is wrong at it's core. I come from the other side. I tend to not give myself enough time for things I enjoy sometimes. Our society is consumed by work and productivity, when it is not in the nature of most people to be productive all the time or be productive in ways people tell us to: Like having some result in the end. Like having a new skill or a product. Engaging in a story or with friends online or focusing on the joy of life with Videogames is productive by itself and we should not feel guilty about that. It's only an "addiction" if we stop caring about other really essential stuff like food, family, friends and so on. I think we should focus more on reflecting the sick relationship with work society has instead of finding ways to make us more productive all the time.
