Replay: 2023 Hui o He’e Nalu Backdoor Shootout in Memory of the Duke - Day 1

The perennial Hui o He‘e Nalu Backdoor Shootout in Memory of the Duke is an event that is emblematic of a proper North Shore winter. The Shootout’s requisites are predictable, and at the same time, ineffable.
This much we know: The Backdoor Shootout happens when and only when the sand shapes up for one of the best, or the best, Pipe swells of the season. There are several teams competing, but even that is fluid, and you don’t know exactly who’s surfing for which team until they’re on the beach waxing up their boards.
Surfline will be forecasting for and broadcasting the event on our site every day it runs.

I miss the N.S. so much, but not all the people...Thank you for sharing all of this!!! We moved to the Big island in1980.....we lived in Pupukea, and Pipeline...Mahalos to all he great times surfing, when only 2 people were out!!! Miss that! Boy and Barbara Pila...xo

Kai Lenny's board is so narrow he carries it like a normal surfboard!!! A normal human couldn't stand on that. I probably couldn't. And I learned to SUP on a 6' 10" x 29" (cause I was so broke, I got it almost free from a SD ripper who said: "You *can't* learn on this board." Honest. I did anyway.)
