Replicate the drum tunings from your favourite recordings (using Audacity and a Tune-bot)

Finish aside, the Gretsch Brooklyn kit in this Nick D'Virgilio Sweetwater video is the same as mine and I've always loved how the toms sound in his demo - so I came up with this method. It's something I've been meaning to try for a while. Using Audacity and a Tune-bot, here's how you can analyse and replicate drum tunings from recordings.
The Tune-bot is a time saving device here really, you could tune by ear then record, analyse and repeat until you achieve a match but it would be way more time consuming. Obviously there are limitations to this process unless you're able to ascertain specifics like head choices, microphone(s) used for recording and the batter and resonant head tensions that are used to achieve the overall tone. That said, I think the pitch of the attack is the most important detail and replicating that is quite straightforward; it's a starting point

Great video! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼 But how do you know what pitch batter and reso heads have to be to get the overall desired pitch? Is there an easy way to calculate this? Like, i want 190hz pitch, so batter needs to be X Hz and reso needs to be Y Hz.

Thank you! Good question... I don't have an answer other than trial and error plus preference. Personally, I tune the resonant heads the same and then crank them by about 1/4 turn on each lug because it gives me a tone I like

Cool idea. But if your entire video is about getting a sound of a drum, maybe you should actually get halfway decent sound.

Yeah, it's a good point. I had intended to record and post some decent soundcheck audio from a gig as a follow up but haven't got round to it. The video is, however, more about replicating pitch which I have done

I've tried this before. It can work indeed but, two things can throw it off. The first is trying to get the same note while not having the same tom size you're trying to emulate. This goes straight into point #2 where a certain tom size will "sing" better at a certain pitch. For example, one of my toms (a 13 inch) has a really hard time sounding good except at a really specific frequency, don't remember which it is. So when you put all this together, your milage may vary...just my 2 cents.

Good points! Obviously in this example, I was working with same sizes and the same drums

That's true. 2 drums of different sizes at the same frequency are going to be completely different tensions, which affects the resonance. I noticed this when I was trying to tune my Roto-toms to Van Halen's 1984 album. I ended up sizing down because the drums sounded better at the correct frequency with lesser tension on the heads!

This is life changing. It was so tedious listening back to my favorite tracks over and over. It is also nearly impossible to figure out the pitch of muffled drums without some ring to hear, so this is incredibly helpful.
