Aaaaaand it's also my birthday! (in Japan 🇯🇵) I already shared this on IG but wanna hear the freakiest coincidence? I was born crazy stupid early and I never thought about when I was ~supposed~ to be born... It's the SAME WEEK as when my baby is due 🤯 and the absolute craziest part??? The baby's expected due date is Mike's exact birthday. WHAT IS HAPPENING 😳

The thing about the dosing I highly doubt that’s accurate. Anesthesiologists are trained specifically to be able to do their job properly based on math that is all about body composition of the patient, what medications they’re one, etc. otherwise they could kill people. Granted, that’s from a US perspective, but can it really be different in Japan? They still have to make sure they’re not KILLING people, right?

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking! I've had multiple surgeries in the US and this was never ever remotely a problem lol But I couldn't be like "you're lying...👀" even though I wanted to

My guess is that Japan has different levels of skill for anethesiologists and your treating hospital doesn't have anyone certified for "complicated" anesthesia cases (as evidenced by them not having epidurals in the area)
@stephsviolin
@stephsviolin Жыл бұрын
@@AkiiRyuuha This is probably what it is. Even here in the US, when I was going through fertility treatment, I had to keep my BMI in a specific range because the clinics were not certified to administer anesthesia to anyone over a certain BMI. I think the dosage becomes trickier and the risks of going under increase when the patient is overweight, so they require those patients to be treated in a hospital setting instead.

@@AkiiRyuuha i'Ve seen a documentary on andre the giant who was so massive that he wasn't on the diagram that the guy uses to figure out how much to give the patient, he ended up having to calculate the right amount based on how much alcohol andre could consume before it started effecting him (which was apparently a lot) my guess is that the diagram that japanese people use just doesn't go as far up as what is used in western countries and making the exact calculation probably requires a strict certification.

I appreciate that you're calling her Reina Jr. and having fun with your pregnancy. I had a pregnant coworker that started calling her baby "the parasite" after I make a joke about how that's what babies basically are. Everyone was disgusted but like, you're literally incubating a human life and shaping your existence around it, you're allowed to have fun and still be a person. I wish you nothing but good vibes, you're legit going to be a fucking amazing mom.

Around 10 years ago, in high school in the US I was told I was “obese” after they took my height and weight for a BMI. I was 5’10” and 190lbs. I did track and field year round, played basketball, marching band, and just went running and lifted a lot. I had almost no body fat whatsoever, yet I was called “obese” and a nurse told me I needed to watch what I ate. This “advice” was not based on bloodwork, cholesterol, blood pressure, or any actual metric that would be reasonable to give such advice, as the only info that they took was my height, weight, and temperature. You’re correct that muscle is much denser and therefore heavier than fat. And again, this was the US where plenty of people are ACTUALLY obese. I was horribly depressed and self conscious about it for a long time until I learned what a stupid and outdated test the BMI was and that one of my friends who was almost unhealthily skinny was told he was “mildly overweight” by the same test. I’m not against medicine of any kind (want to make it clear I’m not antivax or anything dumb like that), but I’ve learned through this and several other terrible experiences in hospitals and with doctors that not all doctors/nurses care or even know the right information at least in the US. I’m aware the vast majority of doctors/nurses are very nice, knowledgeable, and overworked, but if you ever have the misfortune of meeting one of the few bad ones, it makes you wary of them all.
@yippykiay13
@yippykiay13 Жыл бұрын
There’s a reason medicine is called a “practice,” it’s always changing. Unfortunately, stupid bureaucracies in place make it really hard for medicine to catch up to modern research. It’s ridiculous and dangerous, but hey, it’s easier on the books so I guess it’s ok that we all suffer for it. Sorry you had to go through that.
@viys3261
@viys3261 Жыл бұрын
Im a pharmacy student and we still use BMI quite a bit for medication dosing. The thing is, if you’re talking about weight & health, BMI is supposed to be used with common sense. If you clearly see the person in front of you is muscular, then obviously you don’t use BMI to say they’re overweight/obese. For obesity we also specifically look at weight circumference give a more accurate measure. Sorry you had to go through that.
@RemoG0915
@RemoG0915 Жыл бұрын
@@yippykiay13 it's to distinguish the practical use of medicine versus theoretical study of medicine. It's not about trying things to get better. Don't be misleading. That being said, strict adherence to the BMI scale post 2010 is scary incompetence. Any half way passable Dr will look at someone with an athletic build and tell them yea don't worry about it. Also not that there aren't bad doctors and knowledgeable nurses but in general a Dr is still a doctor and a nurse is a nurse. If a nurse tells you something that doesn't sit well with you definitely elevate that concern to a doctor.
@Ariplaygames

Im glad you found the knowledge of how BS the BMI system is, people would never believe the origin of it and how inaccurate it is. Ive had so many people basically suggest that it should be followed like gospel, even if you have to starve yourself to achieve "normal" parameters cause its "healthy", I dont know how they dont see the irony in that.

The misogyny in Japan is much more prevalent than a lot of ppl realize. From not letting men participate in pregnancy (not even allowed in the building sometimes when it comes to prenatal appointments) to putting stricter standards on women and lower earning potential in jobs. I also was not impressed with the treatment of animals there. (Zoos without much space for animals, many dead fish in aquariums.) Look, there are things Japan does very well. I think the criticism needs to be out there for people to see so hopefully it will be reconsidered for the future. We know Japan has so many amazing things, like environmental cleanliness & preservation, which is much better than a lot of western places. Food safety overall too is better in Japan, though labelling is much better in the US.
@yippykiay13
@yippykiay13 Жыл бұрын
Food safety is…kinda weird in Japan. Meals are generally safer, but only because the preparation is taken much more personally with everyone involved, from the fisherman/farmer/whoever to the chef preparing it or grocer stocking it. However, there are a lot of ingredients that have been deemed unsafe by most of the world that the Japanese government doesn’t really care about. This is usually in pre packaged food and drink, so we’re talking chemicals here, not real food, but it’s there and it’s hard to avoid.

I had GD and had no blood sugar issues before/after the placenta was out... your weight really doesn't have much to do with it other than if you're already prediabetic before you're pregnant! But people of any weight can get GD. And also... it's really not that hard to manage. My son was perfectly average in size and had no blood sugar issues. It's not as dangerous as people make it out to be!

This would make me so angry tbh. It is impossible for a baby to be born "overweight". Your goal as a pregnant mom is to feed your body the most nutritious things possible while not being concerned about enjoying a rack of ribs or a damn package of Oreo's. If you were refusing to eat fruit and veggies and only eating junk then yeah that is bad because you're depriving you and you baby healthy vitamins. Having a "heavy" baby (at birth) should be the goal! A 10lb baby would be hard on your body during delivery but we have advanced medicine now. The only time having a heavy baby would be bad is if you're trying to deliver at home with no close access to a hospital if needed. Babies used to get stuck and kill the mother and child back in the old days but thankfully that is not an issue for most developed/developing nations. Also, you're planning on a C-section anyway. SO IT DOESN"T MATTER IF THE BABY IS 7LBS OR 10LBS.

It’s so interesting how different it is in Korea vs. in Japan. I lived in Japan before I moved to Korea, and there are a lot of similarities, like people comment on your weight, etc. but I feel a lot more comfortable here in Korea. All of our medical expenses when pregnant are covered by insurance (you get a card with money on it to use for your medical expenses and you can get discounts when buying baby things) and we barely had to pay out of pocket for my entire pregnancy and birth. I had one doctor who mentioned my weight but not in a super negative way, and I switched to another doctor and he never said anything about it and just encouraged me to walk often. I failed my first GD test and had to test again, and they gave me suggestions for things to eat but nothing like a mandatory weight journal or anything!! The birth rates in Japan and Korea are so low, but in Korea they are trying to make it a better experience so that people have more kids, and it seems like in Japan they are actively discouraging people from becoming parents. Epidurals are pretty common here, and episiotomies sometimes, but not as much. I’m curious what Japan’s take on breastfeeding is. In Korea, we have lactation consultants in the hospitals and I feel like it’s pretty common for people to breastfeed, but no one does it in public and there are lots of nursing rooms in shopping malls, etc. for people to go to breastfeed. But a lot of people stop at around three months and switch to formula.

The fact Japan's population is declining and they need more babies makes their deep misogyny so confusing. Of course no one wants to give birth when the whole process seems horrible 😔 I can't imagine being fat shamed the whole time, not having my husband with me for appointments, not having insurance, being cut against my will and not being allowed medicine... Good luck, Reina. You're gonna be a super mom after all of this!

Hi Reina, my wife (Japanese) and I (Portuguese) have our two little destroyers and had quite a few criteria to fulfill for theirs names. The rules went something like: 1. Pronounceable in all three languages. 2. Kanji compatible for Japanese. 3. Not easy to be turned into jokes because kids in school are horrific! (A rather important aspect actually...) 4. Uniqueness, less important but fun! For our daughter we settled on Lilith (English), リリス (the Kanji is compatible with リリコ as well), and Lili (leelee)/Lily (Portuguese and English/Japanese nickname) For our son we chose Kai, works straightforward in all three without issues or special cases. Hope these two can jostle your brains into coming up with your names! Cheers~!

Examples that come to mind are things like Jouji (George - not for her probably, but just an example lol), Shimon (Simone) or even something more exotic like Sahara. Hearing about your pregnancy journey in Japan as someone who speaks Japanese but also knows a bit of how pregnancy is expected to go in the US is really fascinating. I live in Japan and was pregnant two years ago. I am not a healthy weight. I am definitely overweight in Japan. But I don’t look Japanese and I don’t speak Japanese well enough for the doctors and nurses to shame me so I didn’t have a weight diary or any of the things you mentioned. I was afraid they would tell me to diet during the pregnancy, but they didn’t restrict any food. They just told me to walk more (specifically in the evenings for some reason??). We chose a hospital that specifically does epidurals, too, haha. Because it was 2020 and I commend people who do without but I needed one! But man… they wouldn’t let my Japanese husband into the delivery room at all (tho I pretended I didn’t know what they were asking just to get him in a few times) and that was a bit terrifying. So I’m really interested in hearing about your stories as someone who has also gone thru a pregnancy in Japan!

The alcohol in many foods are listed because they add it during the creation process. Often this is during the cooking process and thus evaporates and then you only have the flavor of it left in the ice cream. One of the most commonly known deserts that does this is Tiramisu, for example. So it might not be as horrible as it sounds.

Hi Reina!! Congratulations, I am so happy for you and Mike 😭😭 Have you considered the name Naomi? I feel like it fits your criteria for being a Japanese and English name, although it's not a super common name in the US.

Happy Birthday!!!! In december 2021 my second daughter born! In my first pregnancy I got fat 23 Kg, that's a lot, this time I got fat 13,5 Kg. Both born well, but I remember in Brazil my doctor always said for not be fat because this is not good for baby and mother. But I been more stressfull here in Japan than in Brazil about my weight. My kids have a Brazilian and japanese name: Alicia Midori and Agata Mai. In chugakko my first daughter don't need to hide her ears pierced and don't need to change her hair's color (she's brunette), I think is because she's brazilian, but I heard a lot of people how need to hide and color they hair for black. And I loved to see a special colab with Sulley in the end of this video!!

Thanks for answering my question. Yeah we know you live in Japan but you just seemed so in love with the doctors you saw in NJ that it made me curious. Yeah without insurance in the states the bill will be crazy. With insurance mine was somewhere between 6k and 7k.

The dual-citizenship is kinda interesting cuz it depends on like... everything. My friend who's parents are from Japan, but he was born here, he CAN and does have dual citizenship still as age 30, but my friends who were born IN Japan, had to choose to keep only ONE at age 21 or something.

Interestingly enough it used to be this way in the US too. My grandmother was told to restrict her weight during pregnancy in a similar way

I wish any of the obgyn I had seen told me as much as yours did. They should have told me what weight I should have been or what percentile my baby was in. They didn’t even tell me I was high risk, or answer any of my questions. The only thing that came out of their mouth was “make another appointment”

Japanese love to use gelatin but most of the time and for school lunch they use Kanten a seaweed base gelatin instead of the traditional one.

Very interesting stuff, thanks for giving us some insight. Name wise, I'm sure you've already considered, but Mei/May, Hana/Hannah, Aime/Emi/Amy, Ema/Emma, Kei/Kay? Then there's kind of old fashioned names like Karen and Jun/June, or you could go for a cool Japanese name that's just easy to say, like Asami, Aya, or Mika? Or there's always Japanese names which you can shorten to an English nickname, like Akira/Kira. Anyway, good luck!

I was also thinking Risa/Lisa, or similarly Rina or Rika wouldn’t sound weird to English speakers. Or Noa. I love Mei, that’s a cute one.

I just watched a show with a little Japanese girl called Hana. Very cute and the pronunciation seems the same in English and Japanese (but the English spelling is a little different). It also echoes the Na in Reina ☺️

As I've understood it, the main thing with cold foods is that it takes more energy to heat the food up to your optimal internal temperature so the body can then break it down efficiently. In essence, using up more energy than usual to get energy (from the food). But it was a while ago since I read up on this, and it wasn't in relation to pregnancy or different views on hot and cold foods from the perspective of different cultures and countries. I did hear recently though that hot showers when it's hot outside is good. I assume because the body ramps up trying to cool down and that then lasts when you get out of the shower into the now comparative lesser heat of your environement. So maybe there's something like that to it. And happy (belated) birthday!

Ironically, there is a similar belief about cold foods that I’ve heard in the US, but it’s a ‘positive’ version where your body supposedly burns more calories to warm up the cold foods/beverages before digestion can happen.

Yes on two things cold foods does take more atp (body energy) but it should help you lose weight theoretically because since it helps your body use the energy Also, yes muscle weighs more than fat and you are most likely dense with muscle
