Professor Haduck, I always find your mix of common sense construction commentary and hard learned life skills invaluable to assist upcoming generations. This video restates two lessons: 1. Great video. I tell you we're in bad shape here in Alabama in regards to professional trades. Had some storm damage and it took me two weeks to find a professional electrician to install a new weather head and he had to drive 90 miles one way. This house is a 1920 victorian style with a mixture of block and brick foundation. I guess I'll not even worry about trying to find a mason to make my stone nice again. I'll do it myself as best as I can. So thanks for what you do and at least kicking me towards the right way.

I have a 1957 home where they have painted the fireplace hearth and surround. :( The paint is chipping off the hearth. How do I remove this paint and get it back close to original? Thank you for your time.
@MikeHaduck2 жыл бұрын
Hi Crystal, they probably painted it because of smoke damage, so even if you could get the paint off you would have that to contend with, maybe re face it, they make brick that is only 1/4 inch thick or the fake stone, I got a video comming up where I re stoned a brick fireplace, thanks Mike

Mike, thanks for the videos. I've watched a lot of them to understand the when and why's but still not sure about what to do with a large brick wall built around 1900. The mortar is soft but not powdery so I think lime was used. Do I just wire wheel to clean and take out some and then repoint with the harder cement?
@MikeHaduck Жыл бұрын
Hi user, watch the video " lime, mortar or portland" what should I use? That will explain it best to my knowledge, every mason, especially depending on their climate will tell you something diffrent, I would do some samples wait three days and make sure it's softer than the brick, my opinion, and see what others say, thanks Mike
@marilynluntz Жыл бұрын
I think I lost my reply so I'll try again. I greatly appreciate your recommendation to make test samples. It forces me to use my brain and learn. I like that. Again, your videos and your help are greatly appreciated. Best regards and respect, Joe Luntz@@MikeHaduck

Hi Brad, that's a issue that goes on and on, everyone has a different opinion, I will usually add a little more sand to make it weaker ond lime like but that's me, Mike

Why not just get a grinder with a raking disc and get all the mortar out. Mix some gobbo at 3 to 1 and use your 13 mm/ half inch pointing iron and do it properly, and it should last for years. As soon as that wall has its first frost, it will just fall off. Also, it needs wetting before you do it. That's what we would do in the UK. We would call that a "bodge job". Or just a really poor attempt.
