In 1961, a team from the SFB visits the East Germany and mourns what is going on in the "Zone". Much has changed in the Baltic seaside resort of Bansin since the Wall was built. The popular family bath of yesteryear now is the bath of the working people, organised by the SED. Hence the beach chairs still stand on the white beach, sand castles are built and the sea is roaring. But the hotels were expropriated to be converted into union-owned homes. The SFB crew reports that 90% of holidays in the GDR are planned centrally by the FDGB (Free Federation of German Trade Unions). Even the vacation time is subject to collective will, the state allocates, the individuals subordinate. By 1965, many more dormitories and large catering establishments for East German holidays are to be built on the Baltic Sea. The visitors from the West capture Bansin in beautiful scenes, but wish for a fall from barbed wire, border barriers and communist central administration.
