Naisha expresses her love for chocolate in the initial sentence, stating, "I love chocolate." This transforms into Naisha says that she loves chocolate. The reporting verb remains in the present tense, and I am curious about the potential number of mistakes that may arise later on.
@chinnupjose32245 ай бұрын

Exactly, this is a very big mistake. Quoted speech depends on the reported verb

But we never said that she doesnt love chocolate anymore so accd to exception 1 in this video the verb still stays in present tense
@Ribka-cq5hn3 күн бұрын
I think it depends the meaning that we want to transfer. I mean if the sentence is, She said" I love chocolate" the reported speech would be she said she loved chocolate this means she used to love chocolate back in the days , but if the sentence is She says" I love chocolate" this means she still loves eating chocolate. So it depends on the way we interpret it.

I would also like to understand why u used past tense in the example of Naisha and chocolate. Why couldn't you say Naisha said she loves chocolate.
@navyasingh34773 ай бұрын
I believe both are correct, because in cases of universal truth or facts, we do not change the tense. However, this statement is not *necessarily* a fact, so we can use either of the tenses

Detailed Summary for [Reported Speech | Direct and Indirect Speech In English Grammar With Examples | Narration | ChetChat](kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKSpgXeZYrmLrdk) by [Monica](monica.im) [00:00](kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKSpgXeZYrmLrdk&t=0) This section introduces the concept of direct and indirect speech, explaining the difference between the two. - Direct speech is when someone speaks directly, using quotation marks. - Indirect speech is used to report or convey information without using the exact words of the speaker. - Five rules for converting direct speech to reported speech are explained. - Rule number one is to add a reporting verb clause. [03:53](kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKSpgXeZYrmLrdk&t=233.159) The difference between 'say' and 'tell' in reported speech: - 'Say' is used when the speaker doesn't want to specify the recipient of the message. - 'Say' is used for conveying general information, facts, or universal opinions. - 'Tell' is a transitive verb and requires an object, typically a person. - 'Tell' is used for reporting instructions, commands, or requests. [07:48](kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKSpgXeZYrmLrdk&t=468.539) In reported speech, pronouns change to match the object, time and place words are also changed. - Third person pronouns like he, she, they usually remain the same. - Pronouns like you become they in reported speech. - Time and place words need to be changed to reflect when and where the words were spoken. [11:42](kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKSpgXeZYrmLrdk&t=702.12) In reported speech, time words that refer to a specific point in the past generally remain the same, while words related to the future are in relation to the moment when they were spoken. - Time words referring to a specific point in the past remain the same in reported speech. - Words related to the future are changed in reported speech. - The tense of the reported speech does not need to change if the reporting verb is in the present tense. [15:36](kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKSpgXeZYrmLrdk&t=936.36) The tense of the reported speech remains unchanged when the reporting verb is in the future tense, but changes when the reporting verb is in the past tense. - When the reporting verb is in the future tense, the tense of the reported speech remains unchanged. - When the reporting verb is in the past tense, the tense of the reported speech changes. - The simple past tense shifts to past perfect, and past continuous shifts to past perfect continuous. [19:30](kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKSpgXeZYrmLrdk&t=1170.059) The video explains the changes in modal and auxiliary verbs when converting direct speech to reported speech. - Can changes to could. - Shall changes to should. - May changes to might. - Must changes to had to. [23:24](kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKSpgXeZYrmLrdk&t=1404) When reporting a question, the word order changes to a statement and closed-ended questions use conjunctions like "if" or "whether" along with reporting verbs. - Exceptions for past tense include when what was said is no longer true or is different from what is true. - Closed-ended questions have a yes or no answer, while open-ended questions start with words like why, where, how, who, etc. - All other rules of reported speech apply, including change of pronouns, back shifting of tenses, and change of time and place words. - When reporting a question, we are not asking the question, we are just making a statement. [27:17](kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKSpgXeZYrmLrdk&t=1637.24) This section discusses how to report commands, giving advice or instructions, making requests, offers, promises, and reporting exclamatory sentences. - When reporting commands, the sentence structure changes from a command form to a statement form. - Reporting verbs like "told," "ordered," or "instructed" can be used to report commands or imperatives. - To report giving advice or explaining instructions, use reporting verbs like "advised," "recommended," or "explained" followed by the indirect object and the main verb in infinitive form. - Exclamatory sentences are changed to assertive sentences when reporting, and different reporting verbs like "exclaim," "cry out," or "shout" can be used based on the speaker's emotion.

Please make a video about PASSIVE REPORTING VERBS because I have watched lots of videos on KZbin but they make me quite confused if V1 and V2 are in the simple past tense or V1 is in simple past tense and V2 is in the past continuous tense. They have many versions of those, so the more I have watched, the more I become confused. Ex1: They said Tom killed the man. Version 1: Tom was said to have killed the man. Version 2: Tom was said to kill the man. So, which one is correct? Ex2: They said Tom was watching TV. Version 1: Tom was said to have been watching TV. Version 2: Tom was said to be watching TV. So, which one is correct?
