His campaign fact-checked the story before the debate. They were told it was false. These people are liars who are running purely on the most base of human emotions: fear. And what is the bodyguard of fear? Anger. Take people's very real fears (real to them, not necessarily to reality) and stoke the anger around it and you have a classic case of stochastic terrorism. Unfortunately it is just easier to destroy than it is to create and while "facts don't care about your feelings" the inverse is also true. Whether based in truth or not, these intense feelings can't be assuaged by something so trivial as "facts".
