oh my .. ur not going to believe this but I did the same thing with the same plant. I was re-potting it and when I lifted it up there were two of those big roots wrapped around the plant. I didn't know what it was but guessed it was getting ready to flower and no more agave! Two weeks later there were two what I thought were pups and now that I've seen yours I know they are pups! I am so happy!! I re-potted mine on a much larger pot to support the roots. Also since I have a dog and one very curious puppy and my granddaughter who helps me with the succulents, I cut off the tips in fear of them getting hurt. That takes away from the beautiful plant but I'd rather be safe than sorry. thank you for your video, I hope we get to see the planting of your agave in the dirt ... good luck!

Hi, if the conditions are right they should thrive in a pot. I am not sure about the zone where you live, but if you have plenty of sunshine, or a grow light, they should thrive. 💚🤗💚

The root did that wrap around because the dirt was not tight against the pot. The ball you pulled out was smaller than the pot. I would be care when replanting with one, and try to point them up when securing to the pot. The plant is gorgeous! How amazing for you to have that many babies! Yay👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

That wasn’t root. That was a new plant that was buried and kept growing underground

That’s what I have! In error, I took a small potted plant from my aunt and planted it in the garden a few years ago. I spent many hours over several days removing the mother and all her teenaged “pups.” Finally got the mother plant out last weekend. From a 4” pot to a 4’ square foot area. I’m near the bay close to San Francisco. Some part of the plant is toxic, because I started out without gloves. OOPS!!! Yeah, I just ripped the pups off, sorry!

Beautiful plant! FYI, though... There's no rule that says you have to remove/loosen the soil with your hands. You can use a sturdy stick, a garden trowel, heck... even a screwdriver. Tools ensure that you (or an assistant) don't get poked by the marginal or apical spines.

Also don't be shy about just clipping the deadly points off in the area you are working .....wont hurt the plant a bit...clip clip clip and a much safer environment to work!

I call these "pups" ...I have harvested several from roadside individuals ....just keep a little shovel in my truck and check out around the giant examples for perimeter pups ....often there are at least one or two! My experience has been so long as you get even some root....even part(s) of root(s) then typically the pups will do just fine ...very Hardy plant!...matter of fact to the best of my memory NONE have ever not made it

Take dirt off around the plant and you’ll find taking what you want to remove easier.

There was very little dirt.... it was mostly roots and babies. We were able to remove the babies and the momma and some babies are doing great! 🙂

Hello, I enjoyed your video very much. Very informative. I have been collecting Agaves for about one year now. However, my Agave Ovatifolia has not grown much. I transferred it from the ground to a medium size pot. The leaves all curl up and downward after a beautiful display. Please help any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Hi.... Agaves grow very slow, by display do you mean a bloom spike? Because unfortunately, once agaves produce that magnificent boom spike they die. 😕 If it hasn’t bloomed yet, it may be the water it is receiving, they also like at least 6 hours of sun. Best of luck! 💚✌️🍀

@@GreenLadyDV hello again, no my Agave Ovatifolia has not bloom yet. What I mean is that the leaves look great, then after 2or3 weeks they start to curl downward and look bad. I've tried everything to get them to not curl up but to no avail. The plant is a year old and very green/blueish leaves. Thank you for your time and attention. Johnny B. Dallas Tx 🇺🇸

Johnny Badillo I see..... 😁 Agaves thrive in the ground... This agave and two of her babies are doing great. I live in a zone 9. It is 101 degrees today. I water mine once a week in the summer and every two to three weeks in the winter, depending on the rain. Make sure you are not overwatering it, but when you do drench the pot. Best of luck with your agave. 💚✌️
