I love oaks and this one is especially beautiful. I took a photo of it when I visited Herons in Nov 2019... (when travelling was still easy 😊) nice repotting.

The soil is really only a place to hang out. It's the chemistry that is important! Most of that happens in the leaves. Water, yes, happens in the roots. But, you give them water. Carbon, water, and micro nutrients... That's it.

Someone cut down a, what I imagine to be at least sixty years old, if not older, red Japanese maple with a huge trunk. I brought it home and planted it in the ground. I made a box for it, and plan to move it later this season. It isn't much yet, but it may just rival some of his. I got lucky.

Wild. It amazes me how well such a large tree has adapted to pot life. It really underscores the importance of those fine, fibrous roots that have been cultivated near the base.

Hello Peter, you've mentioned re-using the soil several times in your videos. How do you know when you can reuse it? Are there easy ways you can tell?

If it's not compacted down to clay, it should be fine. Some people like to display with fancy top soil, or moss. That's just the top layer. If you buy amended soil, and do not fertilize, then it may still be beneficial to mix it with new amended soil for the micro nutrients. Otherwise, go for it. Some varieties like compact soil. Oaks are one of them, those roots...

Just got my first tree in the middle of no where in the mountains around Virginia. It was all a mistake because I put in the wrong address in my GPS but I couldn't pass it up. I find this to be such an enjoyable thing to do and watch and I'm so glad to have your channel! If there is anyone that can help me define what kind of tree I have I would be very greatful!!

have you tried some websites for tree identification? There should be definitly some available in the US. They usually show habitat, bark, leaves, seeds and so on so you can identify the tree to some extent. And you don't know why your GPS send you the wrong way, maybe it was destined to be that way that you found this particular tree. Keep it save

I moved the tree from the soil to the pot, for a month the tree did not branch out and dried up. Roots do not develop. What root stimulant do you use? thank you!

good luck and lots of happy memories on your journey. It is better to start with a few, but diverse, specimens of trees than to never start at all. At the beginning it has to be nothing fancy or old and expensive, but to learn how to care for your trees and be patient and to hear and watch the trees to tell you what you both can do and which way you can go to grow. Time will give you the experience with more and more trees to work with and to not only keep them alive but to let them thrive. And remember there is no time but today to start regardless of age. You can start at a few years old or when you are grey or bald and anytime in between

Most definitely in ground for most of its life. However I still can't figure out how they keeo it alive in such a small pot. Very interesting. Definitely advanced.

Collecting from the wild should be done in spring. It works very well with oaks normally.

I think they grow relatively slow compared to other trees. Shaping a bonsai takes years already so that’s why people often don’t like to stretch the time out even longer

You can see the hardchop at the top indicating it was grown in the ground as a much larger tree originally, where it will achieve size much more quickly. It's probably not particularly old for a very large bonsai tree. Looks great though.

I have noticed that oaks can thicken up really quickly if they're growing in a favorable position, but yes that tree must be at least around 50 - 70 years old. The nebari is impressive.
