I bought a green cascade 1 gallon and the root flair has a similar structure with one root wrapping around itself but I’m a little nervous to prune it bc it’s so young…. Decisions decisions. Awesome looking mikawa tho!

Don’t do it now. Your maple needs as much roots as it can have for the hot summer months

Also if it’s too young just let it grow and see what it does with time. You can always cut it later.

It depends on the cultivar. Some can take full sun and others can’t. Best you can do is to have them on morning sun only.

Why do you call the root Flare? In bonsai trees they call it Nebari. Thanks for the info, I didn't know that that weird root could kill the tree, but that's why I watch your channel. To be schooled on Japanese Maples.👍

Nebari is the same thing. USA is root flare. Also some people call nebari a single root that is exposed or single surface root and root flare the entire bottom portion of the trunk where the tree starts to spreads appart with roots. I had an emerald green arborvitae that died due to being choked by its own roots. It took me a while to understand it.

It’s safe to cut those small roots while it’s in leaf? Slip potted my Katsura Hime recently but didn’t want to go lower to show more root flare because I ran into a dense layer of those tiny roots.

This video was recorded in June and I do not recommend pruning roots during summer. The tree will need as much roots as possible to make it through the hot summer months. I kept this tree in full sun. You can untangle the roots a little but you have to be careful. I only recommend slit potting during that time and then come back during spring and touch up the roots.

Adonidia Palm trees are trees for zones like my home in Puerto Rico (zone 12-13). They will not survive USA winters, maybe the very bottom of florida (zone 10-11). They aren’t meant to be indoors unless you can give it a lot of sun lights. As far as fertilizer, you can fertilize with Palm Tree fertilizer once a month or follow package directions. I use miracle grow for palm trees in granular form and fertilize once a month from March-October.

@@franciscoespinoza5912 you have better chances than me of survival. Watch out for temperatures below 45 degrees. They hate frost winds. Ideals temps are 70-95 degrees but can survive much higher temps with proper watering and can survive lower temperatures as long as it’s brief.

@@franciscoespinoza5912 growing it in pot in tampa should be fairly easy. When it gets cold just put it inside the house near a window and once temps raise put it back outside.

Do you ever have problems with squirrels chewing up your trees?

No, and I have 5 of them active in my garden. My trick is squirrel food mixed with peanuts. They will eat bark as a last resort. If you keep them well fed, they stay away from your maples. This has been my experience personally. The day I find one of my maples chewed up by squirrels then we go to war, simple. I already had a war with rabbits and they aren’t allowed in my garden for violating our agreement.
