Loved how you said you had a whole bunch of "sh...work to do" at the end there. LOL. Yes! Wear an N-95 to N-99 respirator. I would have to add some water to bunch up + see if it held a ball form, but then broke up easily. I'm in 8b also, 100 -115°F five months every year; down to 27°F last winter, 2 months all together. Last winter was a cold winter (2022-23). And, now it's a hot summer all over the hemisphere.

Thanks for the detailed video!! I beieve that's also the mix that MrMaple are recommending, but you got into much more details for the bark size etc. 👍 PS. You should try to make slower movements on the videos, they're slightly hard to follow and make me dizzy 😆 Love your collection by the way!! Great yard!

Thanks for sharing. Liked and subscribed. Looks like about 7 gallons or peat moss, 1 gallon of perlite, to one bike of fine shredded pine bark? Very surprised to see no actual dirt of any type as part of the recipe. Guess that's why they call it potting soil. I always wondered how and why it was so light.

I bought a bag of mini nuggets from Home Depot and the manufacturer must of used the wrong bag for that batch because it was regular sized mulch. Some pieces were like 5 to 7 inches. I just used it for the maples I put in the ground. I also use Cypress mulch.

Yes. I’ve heard that planting a conifer in clay hole is like drowning it in a bathtub because water won’t drain out.
@MapleNutz
@MapleNutz 6 ай бұрын
Planting anything on clay soil is bad. Instead, try building a raised bed and planting in there.

2 inches of shredded maple leaves on top of your containers can reduce your need for peat moss. Jadam Microbial Solution is also great to add the season before. #gardenlikeaviking

hello; I love your videos and have been watching them quite a bit. One thing, that particular brand Timberland mulch appears not available in the San Francisco Bay Area. In fact, I can't find pine bark mulch at all. There is shredded cedar mix or redwood mulch and am wondering if I can use that. What passes for mulch here in the bay area is the colored mulch with large chips used for decorative purposes. I did find one landscape supplier who sells shredded general wood mulch that comes from the local garbage company. They do state that this mulch might have plastic, metal or glass fragments. go figure.
@MapleNutz
@MapleNutz 4 ай бұрын
I wouldn’t use colored mulch for making soil. There must be something around the area.

Use fir bark mulch . Some say its better than pine. Better water retention and aeration . Plus it decomposes slower. Canr find that brand here in washington state either.

@@MapleNutzthanks for the reply. I have heavy clay soil. It doesn’t drain and my conifers die from root rot. As I understand it if I build a berm of 1/3 top soil, 1/3 coarse sand and 1/3 organic material will be sufficient so that water will not stagnate to cause root rot. Does that sound +|~ correct?
@MapleNutz
@MapleNutz 6 ай бұрын
Yes, you can do a raised bed with the ingredients you mentioned for your trees and that will definitely help a lot. (You don’t need the sand if you are using top soil) Clay soil is very rich in nutrients and even though it doesn’t drain well once those roots touches the surface of the clay it will benefit from that. What you don’t want is to dig a hole on clay because it will turn into a pool.

Decided to go with loamy sand and compost 50:50. Getting a bag of each, mix and then test it for pH and composition before placing a bulk order. Can also test how it drains. Thanks for prompting me to think deeper and more methodically. This way will take a few weeks longer but I think my trees and I will be far happier with the outcome

But by adding peat moss and perlite you don't avoid the scorching due to the heat from the concrete and stones. Am I wrong?
@MapleNutz
@MapleNutz 3 ай бұрын
You are definitely right. You do not avoid the scorching of the sun. You only retain a bit more moisture that the plant will need during the hot summer months. Perlite holds a bit of water as well but it’s more for air.
@caslamdq

@@MapleNutz So, what do you do to avoid sunburn? What about the Jordan? This is something I have to learn how to manage. I live in Argentina, in a city seaside, could be a USDA 9 Zone. Tienes q hacerlo y no tienes opciones.
