Maybe your nursery can get you some beneficial nematodes to water into your soils. They will burrow into any opening of the larvae and eat them from the inside out. You would have enough from one pint to cover all your trees. I know my places do not ship out of state for agricultural purposes.

If you don’t want the roots to circle you can put Moskito mash around the sides and the bottom of the inside of the pot.

I was able to tell as soon as you sterted raking the roots that this tree was grown form seed. If you can grow a tree that way it has one advantage in that seed grown plants usually have more or less uniform roots whereas plants grown from cutting notoriuosly have one or maybe two roots. the cascade lemon you have is a good example of the type of roots connomly found on plants started from cuttings. Some trees just grow too slow from seed. otherwise, it's a good option.

I don't know what kind of elm it exactly is, but I'm certain it's not a Japanese Gay Bark Elm / Zelkova Serrata 🤔 (The leaves, the buds, the braqnch growing patter, and I think the bark looks different) If I can get my hands on some seeds in autumn, I'd be happy to send you some though! I'm also repotting recently, and some of the young trees that haven't eben worked on much yet surely can have quite the messy root system... I hope after a few repots it get less confusing and more simple. Looks like your elm is on a good way!

With all the root pruning, your potting seems to depend on watering more than once a day. Not everyone can do that.
@TheBonsaiZone8 ай бұрын
You can put the into larger pots if watering is a concern. You can also place tin foil over the soil to help keep the moisture in. There are many techniques of keeping your trees happy!
@dkstott298 ай бұрын
Indeed, everyone eventually develops their own preferences for soil... Mine has about 15% organics to slow down the drying process.
@t3dwards138 ай бұрын
I agree with all three of you. I'm away from my trees frequently for 3-14 days, so I grow in full organic with perlite...Plus I'm in Southern California which gets very little rain. Do what works best for you and the trees.

Hello Nigel, Do you have any direction on using or not using vermiculite. I’m looking for a cheaper moisture retainer over Akadama. I live a couple hours south of Niagara Falls in case that aids in your advice. Thanks for any input.
@TheBonsaiZone8 ай бұрын
Hello Vermiculite tends to hold too much moisture and goes soggy. I would recommend perlite and a fired clay particle like turface or Safetysorb.
