It’s never easy to make repotting intriguing, however; that’s what the people want! I’m still using organic media so our repotting is different. I did learn some new tips so thanks for still posting. You Phalaenopsis are beautiful. Happy Growing from your PhalPal Durrell ❤️❤️🙏🏿🇺🇸

Hey thanks, I'm glad it was useful to you! Some people just like having a video open on the background while they do something else, so it's still worth making the occasional repotting video even if you don't have anything specific you want to talk about.

Orchid Nerd I totally agree. I used rain sounds in my latest 😂 I really enjoy all your videos because you break it down like I do. I talked about the same half dead roots and I agree with you, leave it. I use to cut all my roots off lol. We should continue to do repot videos because our setup changes, plus it shows how successful the last repot was. Happy Growing and Get Well soon from PhalPal Durrell ❤️❤️🇺🇸🙏🏿

I love that you include your growing environment. I have just repotted a mini Phal into a clay medium with self watering and she is badly dehydrated after about 2 weeks. Despite soaking once a week and leaving some water in the reservoir. I have seen top roots die so I need to check inside the pot. I am sure more roots are dying. My environment is very similar to yours so I have some hope that she will pull through. I might add some sphagnum moss just to help her out a bit...

I'm sorry to hear that! Unfortunately it happens somewhat often that the old root system cannot take a change in environment as drastic as one to self watering LECA (depending of course on what it was in before) and will go rapidly downhill from there. Often the phal recovers by simply making a new root system which is adapted to the new environment, but it can get rough and the transition makes the orchid more vulnerable to other issues. I have since found that mixing LECA with synthic (an inorganic alternative for sphagnum moss) reduces the amount of orchids which have such a rough transition. If your orchids looks badly dehydrated then I have no doubt that most of the roots are dead or dying. Is it spring or autumn where you are? If spring, you could clean up the rot system, put it back, and have a good chance that it will bounce back. If it's autumn, you might want to transfer it to something gentler like sphagnum moss. Sphagnum always works best for me when working with unhealthy and rootless orchids. Good luck! I'm sorry your attempt is not going smoothly.

@@OrchidNerd it is spring here. So I am keeping an eye on the root system. A couple have died but some seem to be doing well. I am going to give it another week and if I don't see signs of recovery I will have to go back to sphagnum. Which is fine too. I just liked the LECA idea. Thanks for the info though.

I think 85% of my orchids adapt with little to no trouble, but the others don't do as well. So far about 5% lost all their roots before creating new ones (or not 😭)

Nice work! Though, hope you get well soon. I was sick since end of November and still coughing... I am still in experiencing mode with semi-hydro... 😆 but I just found a new leaf coming out from my phal! Yay! Anyway... funny I just uploaded repotting video too. But it is Blc. AND you are tagged by me! 😆

How often do you add water
@OrchidNerd4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the seasons. In summer it's once per week or two weeks (depends on heat waves and such) and in winter it can be as little as once per month. It depends on how quickly the water reservoir empties

The orchid wall looks very lovely. Thank you for the tips on growing in Lecca as this is still something that I am thinking of doing. Other then the Phals, do you have other orchids in lecca and on the orchid wall?
@OrchidNerd5 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you enjoyed it! On the wall I also have oncidiums, two dimorphorchis lowii, a brassia, and dendrobiums. All of them are in LECA, except for the brassia and one phalaenopsis gigantea hybrid.
