Still binge watching all of your videos. Everything is constantly evolving and improving for the better. From your video format at the beginning, to how successfully you've "master" semi-hydro and self watering. All I can say is, you are the best and can't wait to so you go bigtime time on youtube! More please and thank you.

Short ones work better. I want to thank you for helping me save my phals. I had them in water culture and they weren't happy and I was afraid they wouldn't survive. Then I found your channel and put them in semi hydro. I'm happy to say they are thriving, they love it! I have since converted all my other orchids to semi hydro also. All of them are happy campers. So, thank you again.

Oh wow, it's great to hear a success story!! It seems that water culture is quite difficult to get right, I've never really tried it but I have tried a modified method for rescue orchids and a catasetum backbulb chunk, before moving them to other medias. I'm really glad your orchids are thriving! Thanks for letting me know 😀💗

It’s a good idea splitting the videos as my main love is the phals both hybrid and species. It just made it easier for me to go to the video which I wanted to watch. Saying that all of your videos are very informative. I like that you share your knowledge and ideas so freely. Thank you

Format is great, but I'm not picky, I would watch a 2 hour video too LOL. Beautiful looking plants your definitely doing something right! Ive lost some of the gloss on some of my similar "novelty" Phals. didn't realize I'm probably giving them too much light. Thanks!
@TheOrchidRoom
@TheOrchidRoom 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks 🙂 They do like more light than complex hybrids for sure, mine were a bit too close to the temporary light source though I think! The shine decreasing on the leaves isn't usually a sign of too much light, yellowing of the leaves or chlorotic patches (yellow patches) can be a sign of too much light, especially if it happens quickly after changing a light source (which is what happened here). So I'm just referring to the leaf colour on a few of them- the Shinger pure love developed large yellowed patches and the overall leaf colour yellowed. I moved into a shaded spot to give it a chance to recover - it's where the photo systems that deal with light on the chlorophyll pigments overheat, and that chlorophyll that gives the green colour is lost or the caretenoids (yellow pigments) get amped up to they and deal with the excess light/heat. But the plant can replenish it if given a chance. You can see the leaf colour returned to normal but there are a couple of slight yellow Mark's left in the leaf centre which was closest to the light source. Caught it just in time! 🙂 Hope that helps!

Just in time since I'm about to place in order...your bloom videos are just my monthly eye candy :) Just wanted to thank you, i currently have a Liodoro and a bunch of miniphals in semihydro and they have really taken off. I got a cheapy heat mat and put them all there in the winter and on cold nights generally, like you suggested. The liodoro newest leaf is about 30% bigger than the previous ones and i recently got it out, cause i was curious...i counted 7 growing root tips,. It is also currently blooming with two beautiful flowers. I can see branching root tips from the mini phals, those got new leaves and roots growing at the moment (branching from old roots inside the sh pot and new roots) as well as flower spikes (secondary and plain new)...I also got some burned root tips, could be because my environment is so dry at times, but it mainly happens when roots touch the leca. So I will get some non wicking pebbles like you suggested...I don't follow your fert regimen since i use a cheapy orchid fert from the super market. I'll go through that and maybe try rain mix. But I think s/h has worked out for me, i only got plain phals on it at the moment, they are also under a grow light, which is also new for me, got it in february. But anyway, i dont think i would have been as succesful without your channel. Thanks :)

Great to hear that your liodoro is doing well in SH, and that it is working out for you and your plants are doing well 🙂 Thanks for letting me know, it's lovely to hear, I'm glad I may have been some use in it! 🙂 If you do try the pebbles I find phals like bigger pebbles, just to make it easier for them to get the roots in between the bigger gaps, and aquarium ones seem to work well! Until then if you can deal with the spraying, using a spray bottle to wet the top layer a few times a day can help just get the roots past the top layer. But it is some hassle, especially if you have lots of plants. Fertilising can be as easy or complicated as we make it, one thing I really think can make a big difference quickly is adding some seaweed into your routine 🙂 Great to hear about your plants and some feedback, it really does mean alot to me, thankyou! 🙂 And happy growing!

@lynnbrooks5503

Wonderful blooms Annabel, Your plants are just so healthy. Interesting how all your leaves are so glossy but the one that you think is a little dehydrated is not. I grow all my plants outdoors and unless I’m getting new leaves, none of my Phal leaves are shiny which makes me wonder am I under watering?
@TheOrchidRoom
@TheOrchidRoom 4 жыл бұрын
Good point, I hadn't considered that. My current thinking is that the leaf glossiness is something that some species are capable of more than others, depending partly on the health of the phal while the leaf is forming? It will be interesting to see of the new leaf the gigantea x bellina puts out will be any more glossy. I also wonder if silicon has something to do with it, since it is supposed to improve cell wall structure, cuticle formation and pest resistance, and apparently silicon can reduce transpiration rates and increase the moisture the plant is holding onto. Some of these claims seem a bit large, but I get lots of comments on my phal leaves and I'm not a super experienced grower or doing anything particularly advanced, just chucking loads of moisture and nutrients at them and trying to control pH. I think the polychilos phal group leaves tend to get more shiny than, for example, the schilleriana group. Some complex hybrids of mine get shiny leaves, others don't and retain a 'rougher' texture to touch. So it may also just be the group I'm showing here is more capable of leaf shine. Interesting topic!

I got all the blooming orchids out, and had the whole table and floor of the room full of them and couldn't face it 😂 This took a day to edit, hour videos tend to take me 3 or 4 days 😂 Also I notice people don't watch more, average view duration stays pretty similar. If I make a 20 minute video, ave view duration is maybe 10 minutes... if I do a 40 minute video, maybe that goes to 12 minutes... thought I'd ask people, as based on the analytics it isn't worth it 🤷‍♀️

How do you know when orchid is established? Great video. 😍 Can you sometimes make video about easy species phalaenopsis?
@TheOrchidRoom
@TheOrchidRoom 4 жыл бұрын
Hi 🙂 Thanks, I say established when they have put out lots of new roots into the pot. Easy species phals- bellina and violacea, it would be a very short video since I don't have many of the other species, or the ones I have I haven't owned very long 🙂 The Schilleriana and zebrina also seem easy, but I only got mine the end of last year so I will see if they pull any diva moves before I say that decisively 🙂 Most of my other closer to species phals that I have owned for a little while are primary hybrids, or slightly more complex hybrids like the ones in this video 🙂

Hi! Thanks! 🙂 No I don't clean with anything special, just diluted lemon juice or diluted dish soap when I first get them to get the white stains off they come from nurseries with. These haven't been cleaned for a year or two, so the top leaves, which always come through more glossy, haven't been cleaned at all. The healthier they are, the shinier the leaves for some species. But that doesn't apply for all species, some will never get super shiny on their own 🙂

Good morning loved the video, and yes doing it in sections sounds good. Now I have a question I’m really struggling with my Bellina, she has 2 very short roots and is working on a new one but it’s just a small nubbin. I bought this when I was visiting my family in Canada last September .i tried growing in bark but it when down hill the changed it to semi hydro with lecca then shaguness mosh now it’s in tiny pot with just some water!, I’m at a total lose any suggestion oh I live in Athens Greece. Very hot and dry in the summer and very mild winter. Any suggestions would be great appreciate. Thanks and have a great day.
@TheOrchidRoom
@TheOrchidRoom 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you liked it! 🙂 Ok so for your query, the bark may have been too dry to get it to root, the bellina and violacea like more moisture than complex hybrids, but one thing I will say is that changing the media more than once for a stressed plant will add more stress and make the recovery slower. Not saying you did anything wrong, its natural when something is struggling to want to switch out the media, and sometimes it's the best thing to do so it's totally a judgement call! It could also be the changes in climate coming from Canada to Greece has added some stress if I got that bit right? So for now what I would do is leave it bare root, does it have any live roots? I would suspend it in a vase with a narrow- ish top to hold it up so the base isn't quite touching the bottom of the vase or cup. Put a little water in the base for humidity and wait for new roots to grow. Medium light, no direct sun, as too much light at this point if it doesnt have any roots will stress it. If it has some live roots, once a day top the vase or cup up with enough water that its roots go into the water, but not the base of the plant. If you can, put a low amount of seaweed in the water and a very dilute amount of fertiliser to try and get some nutrients in and promote new roots to grow. Leave the roots to soak for 30 minutes to an hour each day to try and get something into the plant, then empty the cup out, leaving a tiny bit of water in the bottom for humidity. Repeat the next day. If it currently have no roots, just leave it be until it tries to make some new roots, no soaks but the more humid environment around it in the cup or vase with a little bit of water in the bottom will help, so when new roots start the environment isn't too dry that they stall. When new roots start, wait until they are maybe 3 or 4 cm long and can absorb water, then repeat the above process. Or if it keeps a few live roots it has at the moment just continue that until you have roots that are maybe 6cm long, then pot it up. Probably a good quality besgrow sphagnum/ orchiata bark mix will be best for it in your climate, and with the bellina I would say never let it get bone dry, water when just about to dry. Hope that helps! 🙂 There are lots of ways to modify rescue methods, but the main thing is to keep a bit more humidity around the base so new root tips don't dry, but I find the sphag and bag method leads to rot so I still like having the main plant open to the air.

Holy crap are the leaves on your Gigabell huge. My poor plant looks so tiny by comparison, I suppose I should forget about seeing blooms on it this year. 🙁 It was supposed to be one year to blooming when I bought it last year.

@TheOrchidRoom 4 жыл бұрын
I can't take any credit but that's why I snapped this one up, even though it was the middle of winter and the worst time to order hot growers 😅🤦‍♀️ So any rot is really my fault for ordering at a stupid time, but usually the gigantea primary hybrids offered are only young plants here! I'm having a little trouble with my gigantea and one other gigantea cross at the moment though. They are fussy for me, one randomly started stem rot even though it had just rooted well and made a new leaf and I swear I didn't drip anything on it or even spray it 😭 ....But it doesn't stop me wanting more, apparently I like the punishment 😅🤦‍♀️

how many lumens would be too strong for phals?
@TheOrchidRoom
@TheOrchidRoom 4 жыл бұрын
Lumens are a measure of the light visible to our eye not the light optimal for orchids, so they aren't a good way to measure as green light isn't used much by plants. Light requirements vary for each species, it's trial and error, there is no universal formula for light levels or distance. My grow lights that caused the issue while I was moving and cleaning shelves have lower lumen value than the usual LEDs the phals were under before, for example.
