I have binge watched your entire series and am finally caught up. Congratulations on the engine installation. You are again amazing. No job, no matter how difficult, is beyond your capability and we all admire you for it. The new engine sounds smooth and quietly powerful and will propel Karl briskly for sure. You are an inspiration for all of us.

I have just found your very enjoyable channel and once again I have some good binge watching. I don't know what your engineering background is but from what I have seen so far you have put many sailors to the back in knowledge and ability. You are a joy to watch and I haven't you sail yet. What a treat I am in for. Well done doesn't begin to praise what you have achieved and I have watched more sailing videos (many hours per day over many days and months) than you have had hot dinners so I do have some idea of how good you are and how sad I am. :)

Thanks Pete. It was quite the challenge and a bit nerve wracking to be honest. It did stress me quite a bit that a lot of money was at stake if I mess up 🤣. But so far…motor is still running so can’t have been that bad 😁

Get your self and outboard engine fuel line bulb pump along the the same size hose. You can use it to fill/empty coolant, engine oil, etc. You can even use it to pressurize the diesel engine pump. It can also be used to test/flush fuel line between the fuel tank and engine. Just remember, it can do vacuum or pressure !

Nike!!! I've been following you for a long time and watched you tackle problems with your boat head on. You educate yourself and attack the problem with determination. The measurement you were trying to relay, was 2 thousandths, not 200. 200 is 1/5 of an inch (5.08 mm) and my micrometer eye even though it's not what it once was, it can tell the difference. Great alignment work!! Don't ever doubt your abilities, and don't ever lose the faith you have in yourself. I'd let you work on my boat anytime!!
@WhiteSpotPirates
@WhiteSpotPirates 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly, William, it was 2 thousandth of an inch. I had problems pronouncing that, that's why I never got it right...The 2 thousandth of an inch would just not enter and for my engine I had to be below 4 thousandth of an inch, so I was happy with the result :). Ahoy, Nike

Good Job!! Be sure and set the idle a little higher than you have it IMO. It really makes lots of difference in keep up the oil pressure. When tractor trailers pull into a rest stop and want to maintain their cabin temp, they always set their idles up higher so to keep up oil pressure while sleeping. Your new engine will last longer.

Even if you might not agree Nike, I absolutely love that you didnt buy a fresher boat. It maked the best sailingvlog content ever. Looking forward to see you getting more confident on the water in the future with your new engine. With the experience you have gained and the toolinventory on Karl these days i cant see why you shouldnt. Wish you easy days with Joana the coming weeks to get some rest. You both have deserved it!
@WhiteSpotPirates
@WhiteSpotPirates 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Johannes, no, actually I totally agree on that. A lot of people often ask me if I did not wish I had bought a boat that was in a better shape. But I always say "no", because I was able to learn so much through Karl that otherwise I never would have learnt. Yes, the journey turned out a little different than I imagined, but I acually have (most of the time) really enjoyed those fixing days. Sometimes, when I have a week or ten days that are trouble free, I look around and think "hey, what's hapening, this is feeling so weird, something big must be coming up" ;). It will be interesting to see what the future will bring, now that Karl is more or less "ready". Of course there will always be maintanance, but maybe not as much work as in the first four years...Wel will see... Ahoy, Nike

I suggest that you add an audible alarm for engine temperature and oil pressure. The expense is small and it could save the engine from burning up due to overheating or loss of oil. It's unlikely that these events will happen but the cost is high if they do. Also shaft alignment should have no more than .003 between any points on the coupling faces, however, getting a flexible coupling is very smart and will reduce vibration and the need to have the shaft as highly aligned. This will reduce vibration to a minimum which will reduce wear and tear on the engine, cutlass bearing, hull and just about everything connected. For lightning protection you can get some good heavy duty battery cables and clip one end to the shrouds, and a couple of other locations that have high points and drop the other end in the water. This may not stop a strike but will help divert the electricity to the water for the most part. Of course there is always the chance it will get into the boat, and then the electronics will be fried, but with the battery cables you stand a better chance than not.

An impressive achievement and you should both feel proud. If I understand correctly your achieved alignment between coupling faces was 0,2,0,2 (in thousandths of an inch) which is good👍 In real time you should recheck at say 3 months then after a further 6 months as new mounts will ‘settle’. Thereafter inspect the mounts and recheck alignment annually. Your mounts will last longer if you can keep them free of Diesel Fuel. Well done 👍
