To think that today we have the freedom in the USA, and throughout the Western world, to reproduce documents produced by the combatants who achieved that freedom, using the same typewriter, is extraordinary! Congratulations. God bless you.

i found the reproduction typing extremely interesting. I can only imagine the pressure these people were under. I've been a ham radio operator for nearly 40 years. I remember handing radio traffic and trying to get a reply ready before the net closed, especially when we were handling GI traffic with Oregon Army MARS during Desert Storm before the internet came along. The pressure was on because other states in other time zones were waiting for the frequency. Thanks for doing this.

This is a great window into the past. I love learning about history like this, by seeing actual texts typed. I purchased a few old letters from about 80-100 years ago, to study the typeface closely, in an attempt to identify the typewriter used. It is easier said than done, however I got lucky that in the lot of letters from a Québec City grocer's collection, was a letter from the Remington dealer in Montréal, asking for the balance of payment for a typewriter! One mystery solved! Retro typing is a really cool idea. Thanks for the video! Daniel

Probably not used in battle, but during 'down' times between operations. The decimal instead of the colon may have been simply a style choice. It would help to see the official style guides. I thought about this when I saw portable typewriters from the early forties. I don't have a portable, but I do believe in using them as intended, when out and about. My typewriters are standards, so sitting at a desk is about as 'true to the period' as I get. I did read "The Story of the Typewriter, 1873-1923" which is available from Project Gutenberg. This gives a charming perspective of the machine from just after it first became really popular, on its 50th anniversary.

I think you’re right about the style, as I found other action reports online written by the same officer and he maintains that same style throughout.

Lifting up the use of typewriters to something phylosophyc..it is a travel into the past writing on a Tw. but writing documents fitting to the time of the Tw. Brings the journey deeper, kind if reenactement, must not only be military. Great inspiration, Joe.

What a fascinating video! I love to collect and use typewriters that were used in war or have a story behind them, and engage in the very opposite: I love to use historically significant typewriters to make poetry, type letters, and make prose. I do want to try to replicate some of the old typed documents and experience what it would be like to type them in such environs-it must be fascinating to witness roughly what it was like to type up papers in the conditions they originally were in. I should try to use my Olympia Robust in the field and see what it’s like to use it in clamer conditions but nonetheless outdoors.

I was under the impression 24 hour time would have been used. Thank you for this fascinating look at how these typewriters would have been used in the field.

I enjoy learning about war history and this is an aspect that I haven't given much thought to. Thank you for that interesting subject and seeing how typewriters played a role. It's also interesting to see how the First World War impacted the development of the typewriter.

Brilliant video. Seems mad that I've never really thought about how certain typewriters were used in practice, so really interesting to see you explore that and try to recreate the experience of some typists from history.

There's a strong movement today back to times when life seemed to make more sense. People sense that something is very wrong today and many are finding a temporary escape via analogy photography, old typewriters, survival gardening like the old days, living off the grid, etc., etc.. People are unknowingly seeking inner security.

Hi I too like having a machine that was not only functional but beautiful. To wonder where my corona spent its time and what stories or letters it has written.... I'm having some difficulties with my folding corona. Can you suggest a book where i can find out how to get it back up and typing. Space bar and platen aren't working right. I always enjoy watching your videos. The type ins are awesome. Wish there was a group like that where I live. Keep the videos rolling.😁

Hi Joe, this is really neat, thank you for bringing us along. One of the neat things about writing, be it for work, or creative, the Author lives on across time through a single, or multiple pages. Even this here may exist long after I'm gone...shut date this...03.05.2024 be well my friend. PS: The EP-43 is out for delivery today! What will I name this one... Again, My Best!

Hi Joe, that was pretty neat video. As a history buff I really liked that you showed the inconsistencies of the writing, indicating the duress the officer was likely under when he was writing his AAR. Could you expand this to other typewriters used in both world wars, especially those used by all sides? Thanks!

At 7:41, you mention the alpha and numeric designations as being map coordinates. While the ones contained within the parentheses are grid coordinates, the capital letters after “Order of March” represent the order of each company within the battalion movement column formation. Bravo Company was at the lead of the column followed by Delta, Charlie, and Alpha Companies. It seems there was a detachment at the rear of the battalion column, but I am unsure of what “San” stands for. Perhaps it’s a sanitation detachment often augmenting Infantry Battalions to ensure water sanitation for troops. Beautiful typewriter and beautiful sentiment to honor these great warriors.

I see a lot of european, British particularly, use period instead of colon to indicate time, regardless of 24hr or standard time. They’re interchangeable here in the UK

My great-grandfather died in the field that Sept. 18th 1918, written on the report shown around min 11:30, close to the area described. Isn't it fascinating that you are showing a report just from that date? Pure coincidence of course.

Personally, I'm hoping to find an Erika M someday (in the not too distant future). My father and sister have been learning German on their own for about ten years. They can't really speak it, but they are halfway decent at reading it. I want to write letters to them, translate them to German online, and then type them out on a real German typewriter before I send the letters.

So humble of them to write letters when they could've sent an e-mail instead. ;) After all, that's an @ symbol on the letter Z button, or am I mistaken? 10:18
