Dang it Joe, you mean to tell me I have to go and organize the damn thing myself?! I was hoping some unknown other typewriter enthusiast would do the work for me locally, ah. Thank you for this video, especially the more technical stuff. So many considerations to mind!

A type-out was how I managed to get my typewriters adjusted years ago. The type-out was held by the typewriter repairman and his family outside of a local museum, which proved to be a lot of fun at the time.

I'm located in Albuquerque that sounds like you are too. My grandfather used to work for yellow cab and I have his 1940 Remington typewriter.

Our next Type-In is October 5th, 11am at the Lomas Library. It would be great to see you there!

I was thinking of writing you and asking how to start a type-in. There’s not very many (if any at all) videos on how to start a type-in. My wife and I tried to go to a type-in put on by a typewriter collector club in the Atlanta area. They hold their type-ins at a train museum. We turned around and left when we were told there was a $10 per person cover charge. I thought “why don’t they use a library?”. Thanks for the good information.

I'm a Norwegian, and I've never looked up videos about typewriters, and don't (or didn't) know what a type-in is. Don't know how the algorithm recommended this to me... .. but I do own two typewriters.

This is just top notch useful and wonderfully presented. Your account of Ernie Pyle brought teary eyes. Happy Type-In! Daniel

I have to admit, I never knew there was such a thing as typewriter enthusiasts. I've always been fond of the IBM Selectric, since that's what I learned on in my Senior year, 1978-1979. My future husband impressed me by having a Microsoft Natural Keyboard (I was working at MS at the time). I was like, "You TOUCH type?!" I was too used to guys doing the old hunt-and-peck. Anyway, glad I found this channel! I originally clicked on you 'cause your EDC Pocket notebooks video was recommended.

This is great. There are no type-ins in the country I live in so I was thinking of setting one up, but a lot of work for one person. What I will do is put feelers out on Facebook to see who is even using them. A friend went to a writing group and I went national book day where they were reading their works. None of them used typewriters and looked at me funny 😄

Good one. Best of luck for your type-in.

I really enjoyed this video and found it informative! There is a great scarcity on sources for a how-to on a type-in, and this was very insightful and thorough. Funnily enough, I just sent a letter the other day which had questions regarding this topic. Hopefully I can manage to start a local typewriter guild; from there, I’ll definitely have to begin the first type-in of my area! May the Revolution be typewritten!

If I get in the car 🚗🚨 right now! Lol and speed like a mad man, seriously give it the beans, and just drive all night too, I may just make it, then again, I may have better luck, being the first to lank a Buick on the moon. Man that would be an amazing type-in what an incredible way to honor him, that truly awesome ❤ I'm so thankful for this episode, you laid it all out beautifully Joe, that is just made sense and very easy to follow. And listening following along taking notes because I'd like to start a Type In our here on the East Coast, I'm listening and saying to myself, 'Of course,' or, 'That's brilliant,' and some like 'Perfect,' and 'Great Idea.' I wish I could attend one of these, and hopefully soon start one, there a pretty cool and big community center out here, has multiple different sized rooms available and they are desperate to find venues to cram in, I happen to know the Mayor of my town, I live in a Mayberry kind of town, and I remember him saying events that are not for profit and/or bring the community together are on the free of use list....might be election was coming lol. At any rate it is possible there is a place. Several great ideas, and be a great way to tell my Wife why I need so many Typewriters....notice I said tell....not ask LOL. Just some humor there. Thank you Joe for this one, really needed it. ❤

I didn’t think it was possible to have a type in in my community, and then I figured out how to have one and realized most everybody could have one in their town also.

I was surprised to see that Austin, TX, hipster cental, doesn't have enough people into typewritters to have type-ins. There are a couple of enthusiasts, but it seems mostly dead. I would love to get involved, but I don't want to invest alot of time/effort only to talk to myself.

There is Austin Typewriter Ink group on Facebook, they organize a number of events in the Austin area, perhaps try them. Check out their website, they also have a podcast.

@@Joe_VanCleave they may have a better presence on Facebook, but I see tumbleweeds rolling around. It is on me that I don't get mixed in with the Facebook hellscape. To be cliché, its not you, it's me. I get it website maintenance takes effort and it's largely voluntary. Round Rock seems to have a pretty active writers group I can network with.

What if type-ins also included computer keyboards? Model Fs, Model Ms, modern mechanical keyboards, etc. Heck, why not. What, are we worried we're gonna run out of space?

That’s a neat idea!

@@Joe_VanCleave Thanks! Another idea I have for a type-in is to, as a group, reproduce as much as possible, as closely as possible, the orbital calculations document that T. H. Skopinski and Katherine Johnson did at NASA in 1961. This document is featured in the movie Hidden Figures. I think it would be quite fun to attempt to reproduce it using only tools that were available at the time. Here's the link: ntrs.nasa.gov/api/citations/19980227091/downloads/19980227091.pdf
