Love the series so far! I love what you were saying about talking to the breeders to make sure that they know what they are talking about and seeing the snakes in person, so far I've had 2 instances online where I was sold a ball python as a male and it turned out that they were female. I can't complain too much about that, but it does kinda suck when you had specific plans on what you wanted to pair them with and now I have to wait a few years to breed them instead of one year.

Love this series, and your channel in general. You guys always have such great information about breeding. Started following when I started thinking about dipping my toes into the breeding hobby. Not to really make a huge profit, but because I want an axanthic pied. It has always been my dream morph. But sitting at an average of $3000, not really in my budget for a pet snake. Then, at a local reptile show, I saw this beautiful VPI axanthic female hatchling. So then I started thinking "what if I made my own axanthic pied?" So glad you came out with this video. Was on the fence getting the hatchling because of the time spent having to raise her up and find a compatible male and such. And saw a proven het pied VPI axanthic adult female on morph market. But she's $1200. So I might make that jump this weekend and get that hatchling, if she's still available.

This was a good video. Wish this was something I realized before I started. Although like everyone else I only wanted pets, but I found myself wanting all these high end combos and figured, "I'll just make them myself" but now I have a whole bunch of males and not nearly enough females and it's hard finding females and trying to stay on my planned path

Another thing I ask when I'm buying is what the snake is eating. If it's a mouse-eater and it seems small for its age then it's likely not a good eater and not a good bet. I notice some people sell those on MorphMarket for an unusually low price and it's clear they're just trying to get rid of it.

This series is extremely informative and has been a great source for me. I've only got one pet ball python, a super Mojave, right now, but I've been wanting to breed for a while because there's some really cool stuff that I would love to have, but just can't afford. For example, GHI Mojave combos are some of the most beautiful combos to me. Standard GHI Mojave has stunning contrast, GHI Mojave hypo looks like a literal ghost snake to me, GHI Mojave clown has crazy colors and patterns. I'd love to have each of these animals but I just can't afford them, especially since I don't have a job currently. But my current dream snake is GHI Mojave hypo clown and I want to not only save myself the money of buying one outright and waiting to even find that specific combo, which I've never seen anywhere, but I also want to feel that satisfaction that I produced a snake that I think will be that amazing. I've loved your guys' videos and this series in particular. I can't wait for the next installment of it.

Good vid. In response to your concern about people selling proven breeders, i can totally understand it seeming sketchy sometimes, however... .. I already know before ever breeding certain snakes in my collection that once they produce the offspring i want, they are being sold, even if they produce large numbers. For me its quality that i prioritize, not quantity. Id rather have 2 perfect examples to raise up and breed, than 8 sub par animals that dont inspire me. I dont have the space to keep every breedable adult. Only the best examples of their morph, or who helps me achieve my goals in best possible way. And i think that will only become more common. Not only to manage cost and space, but for the sake of line breeding to improve existing morphs.
@OlympusReptiles Жыл бұрын
I get that, but one question. If the example you are breeding is going to be sold because it isn't up to what you want as an example of the gene, why have that one in the first place?
@acaciaballpythons Жыл бұрын
@@OlympusReptiles The unglorious answer is simply, for a couple of my starter breeders, i had a lower budget. Also with some morphs, the supply just isnt always available. For example: I want good Candino Mahoganies to work with. Theres a male available that i can afford, but no female. However I was able to get an adult breeding ready Candino female(not a perfect one) for a price within my budget. (She had an 8 egg clutch twice so seemed like a good compromise). If I breed that nice Mahogany Candino male to the less impressive Candino female, hopefully i can make a very nice new Candino Mahogany female. If that happens, I progress my project a step forward and then no longer need that other Candino female.
@OlympusReptiles Жыл бұрын
Fair enough. In reading, it sounds like it comes down to a space issue. When it's a space issue (you said not enough space to keep every breed able adult), then one has to either get more space, or sell adults. That seems a lot less sketchy (out of space) them when some say just don't need her when they have tons of space. Big reason why I always recommend asking why when someone is selling. Your answer makes sense, making that type of purchase much safer.
@acaciaballpythons Жыл бұрын
@@OlympusReptiles ya ultimately it is a space thing. I have to weigh the pros and cons of each long term breeder and be selective about what i keep. I would definitely reveal that to whoever id sell her to, Though its also kinda accurate to say she doesnt fit my plans at the same time, and i guess people switch project focus all the time. Like if i decided to quit on Candino and switch to clown (which id never do, lol), id probably sell all those breeders to make way for more relevant stock.. even if they did a good job breeding.

Not sure if you have answered this in the past but, with ball python with so many different morphs, what or how do you tell what morphs are which? I being someone who is just wanting to get into my own breeding projects find it hard to tell the difference. I can tell the difference when it comes to the basic morphs like spider, pies, and albino. Take a look at something like a clown, pastel, fire or even some of the light balls like a lesser where the morphs are blended. I personally just find it hard to trust what someone says when it comes to gene identification because some are so close an when you have a big price difference between two balls that look identical. So I guess the real question is when it comes to Co Dominant Gene's what are some of the things look for I.E. pattern or colors?

It can be difficult, and some comes with experience. Both pattern, color, some differences are small.
