Unlike their amphibian ancestors, reptiles had a hardy skin and could lay amniotic eggs on dry land. This allowed them colonizes some of the roughest habitats on earth, diversifying into a huge number of species, both big and small.
All modern reptiles, including birds, belong within the clade sauropsida, which split from their sister group synapsida (today represented by mammals) some 320 million years ago. There are 23,000 known species of reptiles living today, 11,000 of which are birds. I have already made a similar tribute to birds and so they are not featured in this video as much as lizards, snakes, turtles and crocodiles.
All the shots in this edit were filmed by the BBC natural history unit. They were originally featured in:
Planet Earth II
A Perfect Planet
Dynasties
Seven Worlds One Planet
Frozen Planet II
Blue Planet II
The Hunt

Amazing work as always! I especially love the bird representation, too often we forget that birds are reptiles too!

Excellent tribute on the reptiles and birds, my friend! My favorite reptiles are the monitor lizards ( The Komodo, Asian Water Monitor, and the Perentie are the most favorite) and the crocodilians.

Way too many people have no idea how complex and even intelligent non-avian reptiles tend to be. Crocodilians and monitor lizards even rival most carnivorans in terms of behavioural complexity AND cognitive capabilities.

Did add the adders scene from wild isles?
@PaleoEdits
@PaleoEdits 8 ай бұрын
Yeah no sorry. They're actually my favourite species of snake, but Wild Isles was never released on bluray. And so the only source I've found of it has the BBC watermark in corner. So either do a weird aspect ratio like I did with the bird video or a cinema widescreen - to hide it. And I didn't want to do either. I know, sounds incredibly pedantic.

@@NotesFromTheVoid Maybe, but the BBC usually release their nature shows almost immediately after the show has aired so... Maybe they'll consider it a good christmas gift along with PEIII, who knows. But I can imagine that the whole streaming service trend is lowering the demand for physical media overall, and so they're probably not selling enough. What I find bonkers is that some newer shows that don't release on blu-ray still get a DVD release. Like, I get if the demand for 4k is lagging behind but do people still want watch stuff in SD after all these years?! Or are they just cheaper to make? I don't know.

@@NotesFromTheVoid Thank you! :) And I understand that tutaras are distinct from lizards and so would be very fitting within a short overview of reptiles as whole, but yeah, it is what it is.

I love how you includet birds, because acording to our outdated taxonomy, they count as reptiles. I kinda think update is needet tho, I would separate archosauria from actual reptiles.
@PaleoEdits
@PaleoEdits 8 ай бұрын
Well if, as most would agree, reptiles are a synonym for the clade 'sauropsida' then archosaurs will forever be reptiles. You simply can't grow out of a clade/ancestry. Had we defined reptiles as a synonym for the clade amniotes then we would also be "reptiles". But what we both are is just that: amniotes. These are just arbitrary names in the end, it doesn't really matter where we place them so long as we all agree that we're talking about the same clade.

@@PaleoEdits why are we using it in school than 💀 how is the new taxonomy you are talking about called?
@PaleoEdits
@PaleoEdits 8 ай бұрын
@@vitsvoboda2803 There are probably multiple reasons, partly tradition and partly because it's an easier learning tool. In fact there is a lot of white lying or simplifications of concepts in science classes, which one has to unlearn if one choses to continue science in university or on a professional level. To be more specific with taxonomy, Linnean taxonomy dates from 18th century (before the discovery of evolution) and we still name species with genus names (e.g. Homo sapiens). So parts of the system is still very embedded in biology. That said, evolution isn't hierarchical. And so if we were to classify life based on the actual family tree then it would just be unranked groups within groups (of course all these groups are human constructs, like nations on a map, they don't really exist). The evolutionary and more modern way to approach clasification is called cladistics, and that is why chose to call reptiles a clade rather than a taxon. A clade then contains all species who share a specific common ancestor. The clade 'reptile' would in this case be the group in which crocs, turtles and lizards share a common ancestor. And seeing as birds are more closely related to crocs than turtles then bird have to be included within the same clade as well. There is no other way around it. But there are far better learning source online than me so if you want to learn more, just search for 'cladistics' :)
