Godzilla was bandwaggoning the Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. In fact Reptilicus even borrowed from the ending of the Beast.

Maybe "Reptilicus" was riding some strong wind currents when he was flying around...so he didn't need to flap his (or her) wings...

Seeing the Danish version really explains a lot of the continuity mistakes of the Sid Pink American version, like why, when Reptilicus attacks Copenhagen, all the guns train upward. And it's so interesting to see how Pink reshot the movie almost frame for frame but changed little things like uniforms so they appeared more American (even though Capt. Brandt was a Danish officer). And thank God they cut out all that singing with Petersen (including that veiled pedophile reference). I'll even agree that recasting Miss Miller to a voluptuous blonde worked out for the better. What I hated, though, was cutting out the romance scene between Karen and Sven. Yeah, it was slow at times, but it was not as excruciating as Gen. Grayson and Connie Miller. P.S.: Interesting how Brandt kept getting the short end of the stick romantically in both versions of the movie.

There is a part of me that wishes that the singing was kept In the English dub , if only for the mst3k potential and the flying parts . But, yeah the Danish version is pretty neat in a bad movie way .

I'm really glad you made this video, since I'm trying to find info on non-American and non-Japanese monster movies. Would it be at all possible to have a link to where I can find the Danish dvd, or just the Danish version in general? As you can imagine, it can be very tough for an American to find uncut versions of these movies when the Americanized versions permeate most of the internet that's easy for us to find.
@FictionAddiction
@FictionAddiction 8 жыл бұрын
You'd be hard pressed, I'm afraid. I am pretty sure you can only get it here in Denmark, and with most of our physical shops closed now, it's not gonna be easy. Even then, there would be no subtitles.
@ShogunGin0
@ShogunGin0 8 жыл бұрын
Fiction Addiction Hmm, would it be too much to ask if I were to request that you put the ripped video file from your DVD on to a file sharing site, and send me a link to it? I intend to burn it onto a blu-ray along with the American cut. I've done that with some of the Godzilla movies that haven't had good bilingual releases here. Actually, I wouldn't mind paying you if you would also provide a translation document that I could turn into a subtitle file. It could be uploaded to subspace. com where a lot of other people put up translations to more obscure movies, so if anyone else gets a hold of the Danish cut, a subtitle file can be found. And, damn, are most physical stores closed in Denmark now? As in, no basic retail outlets to buy basic goods that aren't food? That's depressing to hear.

Keep in mind REPTILICUS started as, and is generally considered to be, an American film, written and originally conceived in the US, that was filmed in Denmark, where it was cheaper to make. The actors were speaking english in the version meant for american audiences. In the end, they all had to be re-voiced by American actors because the U.S. producers felt the accents were too thick for the average viewer here. (Their opinion.) I guess it might be called a "co-production" in that the Danes supplied the means to make the film---crew, stages, locations etc.----though it was all paid for by American International. (I knew many of the people involved and have boxes of the original paperwork as the basis for this explanation.)
@timmadone8930

There's actually a lot of differences between the 2 versions. One thing that surprised me was how much emphasis is put into the monster flying in the Danish version. While there's less than 20 seconds of him flying, the actors talk about it a lot. No doubt it was intended to be a big highlight in the movie that sadly was very poorly executed. To be sure the U.S. version is the better version. Better edited, better sound, & slightly better F.X.

Great review, as usual. By the way, this is a thought I had as I was rewatching your top ten anthology segments: what do you think of the Devil's Carnival, if you've seen it? It's a short film about three people who die and are forced to relive their sins in hell (which looks like a carnival), and each one is connected by one of Aesops fables. It technically isn't an anthology film, (though the sinners never met each other while they were alive) but it's interesting in my opinion.

Out of curiosity, what are Dirch Passer's best movies?
@FictionAddiction
@FictionAddiction 2 жыл бұрын
That's a bit hard to say - he was a part of a long running Danish tradition of folk comedies which, at their core, are all very similar and usually feature many of the same actors. They are largely farcical and closer to comedy theater than "real" film in a lot of ways. He was also mindblowingly active, at one point starring in eight such films in one year on top of doing stage work. So it largely simply boils down to which ones the viewer personally finds the funniest. But to name a few generally well regarded ones, there's "Summer in Tyrol", "Baronessen fra Benzintanken" (The Gas Station Baroness), "Charles Tante" (Charles' Aunt), "Ved Kongelunden" (By the King's Grove), Pigen og Millionæren (The Girl and the Millionaire), Miss Nitouche and "Sømænd og Svigermødre" (Sailors and Mothers-In-Law). In some of these he is technically sort-of a goofy sidekick to a more straight laced leading man, but is nonetheless largely one of the selling points.

OMG! For the first time I've seen who played Connie Miller in the non-American version. Though not exactly ugly, she's kind of a scrawny spinster type. In the American version she was played by a big, strapping, voluptuous Arian maiden named Marla Behrens- the only reason to watch the silly film. Try a side by side comparison!

Here's something he most likely doesn't know and that's fine, most people today doesn't know. But back then, danish movies weren't funded by the state/government like they are today, so it's a common misconception that he makes it sound like it should have a budget of 90 million. So, that's just basic ignorence, but that's not really his fault.

Not really. Actually, you're likely to feel a bit freer in public here than in the US. For instance, if you feel like having a beer in public, no one is gonna bat an eye and you won't have to hide the bottle in a brown paper bag, as long as you're not bothering anybody. Most differences in law have to do with age limits, so you should be fine. If you do go to Copenhagen, I recommend taking the boat ride from Nyhavn. It takes about an hour, you can bring your own drinks, it's cheap, the guides speak several languages (including English) and it'll show you all the most important landmarks in Copenhagen during that trip. Hope you get to go and enjoy yourself.

I'm not sure it's clear---or if anybody cares----but Reptilicus originated in america, written in America, financed (primarily) by american producers etc. with an american audience the main target. The actors in the non-Danish version spoke english, but their deliberate, over-annunciated speech patterns (as ordered by Pink in the mistaken belief that it would help overcome any accent issues) just made things worse, and , ultimately unacceptable for U.S. release. Thus, american actors had to dub english-speaking danish actors into...er...english. The idea to produce a 2nd, a kind of spin-off version in Danish-language must've seemed like a smart move. Or SOME kind of move! God knows. It all seems like much ado about nothing. One or two additional notes about this American film-made-in-Denmark thing: Reptilicus was part of a 2-picture deal that originated with American International, which included the shooting of JOURNEY TO THE 7TH PLANET also in Denmark, using some of the same cast and much of the same crew. More films were planned, but since 7th PLANET was also poorly produced and directed by Pink at Saga studios (and had to be fixed in the States), any further sf/horror films that were planned to be made in conjunction with the Danes were dropped. (Hope this isn't TOO boring. But...it probably is! ;-7
