Nah, Sam, I was in middle school 15 years ago and I also remember those anti-gay arguments. I was anti-gay back then, but even I realized that those arguments didn’t really make sense. Having to reckon with the poor arguments against gay rights is what forced me to concede that they should have rights; there was just no reason for them not to. I was anti-gay because I was an immature teenager who thought they were icky, not because I thought they were degrading society. It still took a few more years to fully overcome my personal disgust with homosexuality, but acknowledging that they deserve rights was a big step in diminishing those negative attitudes.

Another big step was the fairly sudden cultural shift starting around the end of the “oughts” away from using “gay” as a derogetory term. (the “R” and “F” slur started to be excised from vocab at that time as well).

60 years ago I was a child in a farming community in New Zealand. Mary was a local farmer, she was referred to by all the other farmers as 'she' but Mary looked like a man, dressed and moved like a man and was part of a very male cultural group of Kiwi farmers at the time. And nobody cared, nobody turned a hair, nobody hated her or shunned her. She was a man in a woman's body and the other farmers totally accepted her. As a farmer, as a human being. Innocent days!

That’s just it. It’s just not being rude. Being respectful of peoples existence. These people are campaigning on their right to be assholes to everyone that’s not a cis white Christian conservative male. That’s all this is, even Macy Gray had sense enough to say she’d still respect peoples pronouns even though she doesn’t agree that trans women are women (even though that’s not what people are saying because she’s conflating sex and gender) she at least had the decency to keep that to herself and be respectful. Thank you, Sam, for bringing up the analogy of how marriage equality was portrayed not that long ago (in my mind). I'm turning 40 this year & I feel like younger Millennials & the generation after don't realize the struggle that people like me went through just trying to come out with the very conservative culture I was raised in, let alone even contemplating being able to marry another man. Trans & nonbinary people are now the current demographic facing the most backlash, but the realization of just gay, lesbian, & bisexual recognized identities & rights not really being that old is itself important. None of it should be taken for granted because fundamentalist/evangelical conservatives would happily do away with all of it if given the chance.

There is an entire stripe of modern day politics that's prevalent on the right and the centrist crowd, but also exists on the left (Jimmy Dore is a prime example) that bases its entire political outlook on reactionary offense against ever being corrected on anything. For them there exists a first thought (and a lack of capacity to think twice) and a single response: "I'm not wrong, how could you say I'm wrong?" Every other position is built out of the oppositional defiance therein. A lot of the current transphobia in our discourse is the result of first thoughts about trans people being challenged at all, and the knee jerk reactions to that. It sucks.

I understand that when a definition of a word changes or gains nuance, it can take time to get used to but it's not something to get angry about. Trans folks who are transitioning means that their loved ones are also going through a transition, of leaving behind their dead-name, and remembering to refer to them by their preferred pronoun. This transition is, by definition, a process, and loved ones are going to make mistakes with regard to the trans person's name, gender pronoun, etc. A close friend of mine who is the father of a trans child is in this transition process. He still occasionally makes mistakes and either misgenders the child, or dead-names them. But because he loves his child he works very hard to correct his mistakes and be the supportive father the child needs. We cishet folks are going to make mistakes with regard to misgendering or dead-naming our trans loved ones. It doesn't make us bad people; it just means we're human. If we have compassion and empathy, we will correct our mistakes when called out, and strive to do better. It's really not that hard.

I have a trans-child. Took me a while to adjust to the pronouns after 20 years of thinking one consistent way. Old habits are hard to break. Now I have a habit of using their dead-name when I'm talking about things that happened in their childhood when that really was their name, especially if I'm talking to other people who knew them (her pronoun was "her" then too) at that time. The rest of the time (talking about the present or recent time) I stick to their preferred pronouns and new name. It doesn't help that I spent 45 years under the understanding that "they" is a plural pronoun so talking about one person but saying they or them still feels wrong to me, even if that's what they want. I go with it, but my ears hear the wrongness in the sentence structure. For example, if I say "Dave is going to the store", or "he is going to the store", or "they is going to the store", that third one seems to break the subject-verb agreement rule of grammar. If I change it to "they are going to the store" then "they" needs to be plural in order to agree with the verb. But if "they" refers to my child in the singular, then the verb is wrong and I really should say "they is going to the store" even though that sounds like horrible grammar. For me, this grammar problem has been harder to grapple with than actually getting used to new names and pronouns.

@@blakewalker84120 Hi Blake, the singular they has actually been in use for centuries. Think of a sentence such as "Someone lost their wallet." There's a Wikipedia article if you want to learn more. @@jetywawoo I get what you're saying. And English is prescriptive, not descriptive. I've heard it. I use it. But it's still grammatically awkward if not explicitly wrong. I might say: Dave IS going to the store. He IS going to the store. I would never say: Dave ARE going to the store. He ARE going to the store. Then Dave tells me their pronoun is "They/Them". Fine. That means I swap "He" for "They". The verb "is" is still singular and Dave is still singular. The verb "are" is still plural and Dave is not plural. Therefore: They IS going to the store. (using the singular verb is in subject-verb agreement) They ARE going to the store (using the plural verb is NOT in subject-verb agreement unless Dave is bringing somebody else to the store with him). Maybe the new English is evolving to where making subjects agree with the verb is no longer a priority. If that's true, then They are going to the store. Might be correct in modern English evolution. But also, that means Dave are going to the store. Must be equally correct. I'm not saying I can't learn to do respect peoples' pronoun choices and use whatever pronouns they request me to use. I have learned to do this. It just always sounds grammatically wrong either way I do it.

What we know now is that people's biological sexes do not always fit neatly into one category. Some people differ so much that they are intersex (divergent enough to where it's quite noticable and surgery must happen). While these categories often translate somewhat over to an individual's gender, clearly it's not clear cut and some people's brains do not associate with the gender that was assigned to them at birth. So they transition. Some people's brains do not associate with either gender or associate with both. My point? This is fine and normal not scary. Neither is learning these truths. It may be hard to adapt to new information but the point where it is problematic is to be dismissive without hearing a case and to be against learning new information. It's okay to not agree with the mainstream on everything. Some rhetoric calls for the banning of all guns; I think that's impossible and irresponsible. That's fine to say "I just dont agree, but I'm willing to change if convinced". I think everyone should have lines but be open minded into readdressing those lines if proven that they were wrong. I think older people as they age forget that they need to be fine when they're wrong to admit that they were wrong. I used to be anti gay and anti trans, now I'm pro both (in my defense I was in hs and ms when I held those views).
