My audio corrupted for this episode so I recorded the voice over after the episode was done - I thought this was better than not showing what happened here before Episode 10, seeing as we discover Cape Trelawney! Episode 10's audio is fine and back to normal. Also wanted to mention that 4 out of 9 of the episodes (incl. this one) of this series has been claimed for copyright falsely and my channel is under threat of being deleted/going offline as I'm appealing all the claims. I've spoken with Ubisoft who say I have permission and the videos should not be claimed, but there's little they can do on their end. If you want to support further, please consider using the "JOIN" to become a channel member either here or on my ROP main channel. Thanks for the support so far, and wish me luck! :P

Salt water has a lower freezing point than pure water. So when you put salt on ice the frezzing point will get lower and the ice will melt. In countries where there is a lot of snow/ice during winter the streets get salted so they won't be as slippery. That's why there was an option in the expedition to put salt on the ice to free the masts.

Yep. When it snows where I live, we shovel the walks, and then lay down the special salt to melt the leftover snow and ice, and it stays clear, even if more snow falls.

When you "spray" ice with salt it "melts". It's used to make streets drivable and the method was used for making ice cream in the long past (the salt also lowers the ices temperature which can freeze ice cream in a bowl placed in the ice)
@ialsoagree4 жыл бұрын
What isn't commonly known by people who don't live in areas with snow plows is that salt isn't actually very effective at melting established ice. This is because salt only lowers the melting point when it's dissolved in water. If you dump salt on ice, not much happens because salt and ice don't mix in any appreciable way without considerable effort (IE. crushing the salt into the ice, and generally getting some of the ice to melt due to pressure). Instead, in northern latitudes when the roads are already covered in ice, sand is usually deployed (often as a sand/salt mixture). Sand has a much smaller environmental impact than salt (salt effects the pH of water, and can have devastating effects on fish and other aqueous species when salt water runs into water ways), and it can help tires keep traction while driving over ice or snow. Since it's purpose isn't to melt the ice, it's remains effective. Boiling sea water to get salt would be a pretty energy inefficient endeavor, and if the salt was being used to melt existing ice, it'd be incredibly difficult. You'd have to crush the ice enough to get some of it to melt into water so the salt could dissolve. But if you're crushing the ice, that would probably be sufficient to free your sails without any salt at all.

@@patmccall4647 Definitely super neat. After molecular hydrogen, water is also the most common molecule in the universe (with Hydrogen and Oxygen being the 1st and 3rd most abundant elements in the universe)! My understanding is we still don't quite know why water expands as it's freezes, but I may just not have read up on all the research. My hypothesis would be that it has something to do with the crystalline structure it forms while freezing requiring a certain spacing.

Oke so what the salt does, is decrease the temperature at which ice is formed, thus putting salt ontop of ice (locally) melts the ice, as the new consistency of the water now has a lower melting temperature. One should note, however, that at really low temperature, this no longer helps. Last but not least, the sea water already contains salt (and not the kind of salt used to de-ice roads). Thus the method in anno is actually incorrect. You better use the hot water to melt the ice instead (Do not try this for car windows tho, as glass has a rather poor heat conductivity, hence you will have a high chance of cracking your window).

I don't think I'd be happy to run things with an income deficit. @jcoublie6834 жыл бұрын
#RepublicOfLetsPlay, there is always a small tiny layer of liquid water on top of the ice. What happens when you put salt on the ice is the tiny layer of water gets highly concentrated in salt, and thanks to a process called osmose, the ice turns slowly to water in order to lower the salt concentration in the layer of water, resulting in the ice melting overall. That's one part of the process. If we go more in-depth, the salt separates the water into ions, 2 hydrogens, 1 oxygen. The result of that is, a bit like rust with iron, only much faster, the saltwater will start eroding the ice by substracting hydrogen bonds to the ice molecule, which results in the ice dissolving. I think this covers it. If I made a mistake, feel free to correct me! Then, finally, when all the ice is melted down, the saltwater will have a much lower freezing temperature. I am getting way out of my knowledge, but if I had to guess, ice is a result of bonds between hydrogen and oxygen. If you add in a salt molecule in between these two elements, it will make the process more tedious for the creation of ice. Have a nice day, hope this helps!!!

And for production buildings if you have potato 🥔 farm than you can put schnaps just in reach of the potato and than you extend range that's is easy at the start so can you save some money on the maintenance.
