Hey Mat, I so enjoy seeing you make modifications to these vintage Hot Rods that are just like I did as a kid. I used to roam several junk yards with in a few miles of my home looking for parts to us as is or make a change or two to make things work as needed. Even now while building a vintage style Hot Rod, I like to use parts or materials from junk yards or scrap yards. Work Safe, Be Well Stay Warm

Nice work. Shock mounts look like they were born that way. And, I really like the natural sound video. It's like I'm there hanging out and watching you work. 🤘😎

Nice improvement , form & function , along with some good old fashioned hardware repurposing , & ingenuity . Anyone who has ever driven a vehicle with bad , or no , shocks knows , they can & will bounce long after the initial disturbance , even making the handling dangerous . A major plus is the air or gas shocks are faster reacting to changes . The original oil filled puck style shocks were too slow to react well , resulting in a rough ride , & dangerous characteristics on wash board surfaces . Another solid win for ITG , & some old school know-how to improve the drivability of an older vehicle with newer style upgrades , keeping both the vehicle & the driver on the road , & in one piece . A win-win .

Shock valving is the difference. If it is 50/50 valve you are ok. I think the old short ones were so either way should be fine.
@donames6941 Жыл бұрын
Shock mounting depends on the shock. Most old schools need shalf up cause of the way it's made.And new ones can go both ways

Those shocks were stock 1963 to 1978 corvette rear 9 1/4 closed 14 in open with 7/16 hole on on end 3/4 in other same as Pete and Jakes and SoCal I have bee using them for years

Only one thing wrong Matt you need to have the shock eyes turned the same way It will bind up and end up braking one end off the shock .

I have a feeling the shock ought to be the other way up, but that might lead to clearance issues with the brake pipes etc. I used f1 mounts like that on my 32.

What did you use for the bottom mount, a bolt? You drilled a hole in the wishbone, did the bolt pass thru and then get welded? Looks good.
@terry3665 Жыл бұрын
I'll bet he welded a stud in just like the video shows @14:37
@bluedog373 Жыл бұрын
Boom, you just can't mount em any which way you feel like. They don't work upside down. That bottom mount should also be turned 90 degrees so it's the same as the top. With the exception of a few specialty shocks, you should never mount your shock absorbers upside down. Typical twin-tube shocks are simply not designed to function upside down for many important reasons. Attempts to do this will likely result in poor shock performance, premature failure and potential damage to your vehicle.
Hey Steve what did you do to your left wrist? Matt me thinks that shirt has seen better days. 😅
@garycamara9955 Жыл бұрын
I used modified Pinto shocks.
@fredkaminski3668 Жыл бұрын
I think the shock is mounted upside down? I would mount it with the rod on top, body mounted to the wishbone.
@vaunrichards2571 Жыл бұрын
Hi Matt. Doesn’t the bottom stud that you welded to the radius rod need to be angled down ever so slightly so that there’s no bind in the bottom bush of the shock. It looks like there’s unnecessary stress on that bush. Maybe just what we can see on camera though.
@836dmar Жыл бұрын
90 degrees on that lower mount so it can swivel in the designed axis - side to side as the suspension angle changes. This is why they were commonly mounted off a stud welded to the axle at the perch. As is its set to swivel front to back. Such a mount though would look a little different. Hopefully this will never see that much movement.
@randyham6172 Жыл бұрын
Can't see, the headlight is in the way
@thorsten_w Жыл бұрын
I think it would be better to turn the lower end of the shocks by 90 degrees. Otherwise there might be some force on the shock, because it can't swivel in the direction it is in currently. This might result in leaking shocks quite soon or even break the shocks.
@garycamara9955 Жыл бұрын
They don't swivel.

Hi from the UK. Would those 48-52 mounts be strong enough to use on my '42 1+1/2ton dually I cant afford to send the Houdailles to the US for rebuild so fittin tubes using the orig lower link bushing mount with a mount stud . Any advice?👍

Those shocks!! Just terrible!! I personally built the shocks for Ben Hur's chariot and have over 1000 years experience with the absorbing of shock, and I can tell you you have no idea what you are doing. You need big wooden wheels and some whalebone!! Geez!!!
