Mike Shriberg, PhD (UM Professor of Practice & Engagement, Director of Engagement, Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research and Michigan Sea Grant) and his graduate students from multiple programs at UM present their examination of 4 alternatives for electricity supply and distribution to Investor-Owned Utilities (IOU) in Michigan. The research looked at each option using climate, reliability and justice criteria. The results weighed the long-term pros and cons (without assessing the politics) of a statewide public takeover of existing IOUs, the utilization of Sustainable Energy Utilities (SEUs), assistance for increased municipalization, and increasing the power/authority of the MPSC.
